Reliable, fulfils compliance requirements, and enables to manage data backups easily
I use the solution for backup and recovery Our systems have become more stable and scalable after using NetApp AltaVault. The dashboard is useful for managing data backups. The deduplication technology helps me take offline backups efficiently. The workload on the end team has been reduced. It…

The solution can be used to back up servers and Hyper-V cluster nodes, but its support is super expensive
I wouldn't rate Unitrends a ten out of ten because we had some hard drive failures in the appliance. Typically, when you have OneDrive, you can get it replaced. For some particular reason, the situation caused the entire system to crash. We had to reinstall the CentOS operating system on it, and we lost all our backups. They said there was no way to retain it, and it was pretty devastating and concerning that a drive failure would cause the loss of all the data on the appliance. It was extremely disappointing, and we had to start from scratch after three years worth of backup data. I rate Unitrends a nine out of ten for stability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's so easy to work with."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"Its initial setup is easy."
"Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored."
"The dashboard is useful for managing data backups."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."
"The flexibility. Being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"The ability to diversify jobs within the same server helps break down a large chunk of data into more manageable and concentrated chunks."
"Stability-wise, I rate this solution a nine out of ten."
"The ability to back up both physical and virtual appliances under one roof."
"When we talk about a backup point of view, from a backup perspective, it's a good one."
"I like the fact that you can recover the VMs inside the appliance. For example, they're basically running this appliance on a Linux-based distribution, and they're spinning off KVM virtual machines inside."
"I really like the reporting options you get for various email reports."
"It is fairly stable."
"The simple and fast restore routine."

Cons

"The product must provide multi-gate connectivity."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."
"The initial installation is difficult for my clients who have it on both on-premises and on cloud."
"It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution."
"The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult."
"It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture."
"The solution needs faster indexing."
"It could be a little more customizable."
"Making the seeding process more accessible and easier to understand. Also, make more of the undocumented best practices easier to find."
"The amount of updates which are being released. Updates should be limited to two or three a year, focusing more on quality instead of a rushed bug release."
"There are a few quirks where the GUI, agent, and back-end are not precisely meshed."
"The solution's base operating system needs to be improved."
"I would like to see more storage options for the free version."
"I would like to see the real-time replication process improved, and a zero RPO feature added."
"There's a lot that can be made better. For example, it could be more scalable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"The price is a bit high."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"We found that the cost of Unitrends was about the same as the Dell DR6300. We liked the fact that the Unitrends appliance was all-in-one."
"Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
"When you purchase initially, get into the program which gives replacement hardware for free when you renew your support agreement."
"I would rate the solution's pricing a four out of ten. The licensing is yearly and it depends on the customers."
"Unitrends is an expensive solution."
"Make sure you do the homework to size the solution properly. Buy the Enterprise Plus licensing if you can afford it."
"When we renew the Unitrends maintenance contract and update it to the latest version, the cost would be $5,000 per year. There are no hidden costs. They've been transparent with the costs."
