Reliable, fulfils compliance requirements, and enables to manage data backups easily
I use the solution for backup and recovery Our systems have become more stable and scalable after using NetApp AltaVault. The dashboard is useful for managing data backups. The deduplication technology helps me take offline backups efficiently. The workload on the end team has been reduced. It…

The solution can be used to back up servers and Hyper-V cluster nodes, but its support is super expensive
I wouldn't rate Unitrends a ten out of ten because we had some hard drive failures in the appliance. Typically, when you have OneDrive, you can get it replaced. For some particular reason, the situation caused the entire system to crash. We had to reinstall the CentOS operating system on it, and we lost all our backups. They said there was no way to retain it, and it was pretty devastating and concerning that a drive failure would cause the loss of all the data on the appliance. It was extremely disappointing, and we had to start from scratch after three years worth of backup data. I rate Unitrends a nine out of ten for stability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The dashboard is useful for managing data backups."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data. You're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"It's so easy to work with."
"You can store backups for a while."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"Its initial setup is easy."
"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it."
"When we talk about a backup point of view, from a backup perspective, it's a good one."
"Replication to Forever Cloud."
"The most valuable feature of Unitrends for me is the automated feedback"
"I really like the reporting options you get for various email reports."
"Unitrends has helped us cut down the time that it takes to restore a server to its original configuration."
"It is very easy to set up and get started. Almost too easy. We racked this device and had it up and running in less than 15 minutes."
"It is fairly stable."
"If you are a large organization, this is a product for you."

Cons

"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror."
"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."
"It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution."
"It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."
"I would like to see more web support."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult."
"It could be a little more customizable."
"Comparing the features and the working pattern, definitely they have to come down on pricing if they want to compete in the market."
"It seems like Unitrends moved away from enterprise customer engagement and moved more towards the managed service provider market."
"The solution's base operating system needs to be improved."
"There are a few quirks where the GUI, agent, and back-end are not precisely meshed."
"No appliance update notifications."
"If the interface could be less complex, it is would be great."
"I would like to see more storage options for the free version."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"The price is a bit high."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"When you purchase initially, get into the program which gives replacement hardware for free when you renew your support agreement."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"When we renew the Unitrends maintenance contract and update it to the latest version, the cost would be $5,000 per year. There are no hidden costs. They've been transparent with the costs."
"You should be aware how much the monthly costs are to use, what the initial costs for hardware are, and what the options to expand are, if needed."
"Based on a scale of one to ten, with one being low and ten being high, I would rate the pricing of this solution as a three. Also, there are no additional costs involved in the standard licensing of the solution."
"We found that the cost of Unitrends was about the same as the Dell DR6300. We liked the fact that the Unitrends appliance was all-in-one."
"Their licensing depended on the number of CPUs you had."
"Unitrends is an expensive solution."
