We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution has a good optimization feature.""It also brings up a list of machines and if something is under-provisioned and needs more compute power it will tell you, 'This server needs more compute power, and we suggest you raise it up to this level.' It will even automatically do it for you. In Azure, you don't have to actually go into the cloud provider to resize. You can just say, 'Apply these resizes,' and Turbonomic uses some back-end APIs to make the changes for you.""My favorite part of the solution is the automation scheduling. Being able to choose when actions happen, and how they happen...""On-premises, one advantage I find particularly appealing is the ability to create policies for automatic CPU and memory scaling based on demand.""With over 2500 ESX VMs, including 1500+ XenDesktop VDI desktops, hosted over two datacentres and 80+ vSphere hosts, firefighting has become something of the past.""We have VM placement in Automated mode and currently have all other metrics in Recommend mode.""The ability to monitor and automate both the right-sizing of VMs as well as to automate the vMotion of VMs across ESXi hosts.""I like Turbonomic's built-in reporting. It provides a ton of information out of the box, so I don't have to build panels for the monthly summaries and other reports I need to present to management. We get better performance and bottleneck reporting from this than we do from our older EMC software."

"The monthly reports come complete with graphs and summaries, it's really helpful.""The most valuable features are the notifications, which give us failure alerts for some infrastructure within the backup, and the reporting is excellent.""The most valuable features of Veeam ONE are the backup reports, such as the status of the storage.""Setting up Veeam is easy, and it's portable, too.""Veeam ONE is a very good management product...The technical support is very good, and I think it's one of the best. The response time is very quick.""The best feature of Veeam ONE to me is the infrastructure analysis that you can perform before deploying a backup environment. You can put in your backup requirements, for example, repository files and improvements on your VMware side, to ensure that it runs optimally. Pricing for Veeam ONE is also cheaper than VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) which is a direct competitor in the ops space, so this is another advantage of the solution.""Veeam One is a centralized management and centralized reporting tool. The tool has supportive infrastructure to create specialised applications and some server application. You can add all the resources and infrastructure. You will get the reports, can easily manage and monitor any feature.""I like the backup and backup copy features."

Cons
"We're still evaluating the solution, so I don't know enough about what I don't know. They've done a lot over the years. I used Turbonomics six or seven years ago before IBM bought them. They've matured a lot since then.""The deployment process is a little tricky. It wasn't hard for me because I have pretty in-depth knowledge of Kubernetes, and their software runs on Kubernetes. To deploy it or upgrade it, you have to be able to follow steps and use the Kubernetes command line, or you'll need someone to come in and do it for you.""We don't use Turbonomic for FinOps and part of the reason is its cost reporting. The reporting could be much more robust and, if that were the case, I could pitch it for FinOps.""While the product is fairly intuitive and easy to use once you learn it, it can be quite daunting until you have undergone a bit of training.""They have a long road map when we ask for certain things that will make the product better. It takes time, but that's understandable because there are other things that are higher on the priority list.""After running this solution in production for a year, we may want a more granular approach to how we utilize the product because we are planning to use some of its metrics to feed into our financial system.""It would be good for Turbonomic, on their side, to integrate with other companies like AppDynamics or SolarWinds or other monitoring softwares. I feel that the actual monitoring of applications, mixed in with their abilities, would help. That would be the case wherever Turbonomic lacks the ability to monitor an application or in cases where applications are so customized that it's not going to be able to handle them. There is monitoring that you can do with scripting that you may not be able to do with Turbonomic.""Some features are only available via changes to the deployment YAML, and it would be better to have them in the UI."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"In future releases, I would like to see the solution provide auto resolution and auto relocation of resources.""It would be great if Veeam ONE had a business hour reporting feature because sometimes a client would want to know what workers do during business hours and outside of business hours. This type of report will give you the added benefit when you're scaling up and scaling down in the cloud, for example, if I wanted to swap hot and cold storage during specific hours to save on cost. Business hour reporting in Veeam ONE will give you a lot of benefits and added value. Scalability needs to be improved in the solution.""Veeam's biggest limitation is the lack of integration. I can't use the tool because there is no integration between the tool and the environment.""It's not that easy to use from the management side.""The pricing is very high.""I face difficulties when trying to deploy Veeam ONE because my active directory restricts some particular rights.""In future releases, I would like to see more automation capabilities. It could integrate with automation services to automatically resolve identified issues rather than simply providing instructions to the user.""The solution could improve the performance. We are not able to check the status of any system. Additionally, if there was an option to monitor server clusters it would be helpful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We felt the pricing was very fair for the product. It is in no way prohibitive for larger deployments, unlike other similar product on the market."
  • "Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
  • "What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
  • "Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
  • "You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
  • "Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
  • "If you're a super-small business, it may be a little bit pricey for you... But in large, enterprise companies where money is, maybe, less of an issue, Turbonomic is not that expensive. I can't imagine why any big company would not buy it, for what it does."
  • "It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."

  • "For what it does, the price is acceptable."
  • "If you have Veeam Backup and Replication with the essential license then this solution is free. If you were to purchase Veeam ONE by itself it is priced cheaper than competitors."
  • "The licenses are code-based or server-based for Veeam ONE. The last version is 12, and it is host-based, I don't like to move to a code-based solution."
  • "Veeam has been raising its prices in the last two years, so it's now lacking some competitiveness in pricing."
  • "I have not used the resale license in our testing environments. Sometimes, our customers used the trial license for 30 days and so on."
  • "I don't pay for the solution, so I can't comment on the cost."
  • "The cost is based on the number of core servers."
  • "Our licensing cost is $200 a year."
