Centralized capacity planning has improved insight into storage consumption for long term growth
Implementing IBM Spectrum Control is complex; we have had several calls to IBM to solve problems about DVM stack size, max memory size, and other issues such as buffer and cloud buffer size. Currently it is working, though we still have swap issues on our Linux Spectrum Protect server. We experience swap issues when we run a big retention set, and we have noticed that on the server we have memory available, but it seems that IBM Spectrum Control is using swap because the DBM max memory size is two gigabytes. This causes IBM Spectrum Control to use swap size instead of using memory, which is an issue we have opened a call to IBM about. We hope to ask why we have no report on the clone because on our storage we have an internal clone, but it is not reported. We will see with the support why it is not reported.

Versatile data protocols improve efficiency while execution capabilities need enhancement
The ease of configuring NetApp FAS series is noteworthy, as they support multiple standards like iSCSI, NFS, Fibre Channel, and NVMe. NetApp's data efficiency protocols are unmatched in the industry. ActiveIQ offers significant improvements in data monitoring and error notification. It provides crucial data management features and has versatile support for various protocols and standards, making it a one-size-fits-all storage solution.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The granularity of this solution has been most useful, as customers can click on a single item and get the information only for the single item they choose."
"It has turned out to be just as good, if not better, than what we were paying thousands of dollars for."
"In my opinion, it's the best monitoring and report creation tool for IBM storage devices."
"The product keeps historical data for a very long time."
"Spectrum Control's scalability is fine - we can extend it for the backup requirement."
"The ease with which you can drill into whatever individual component, or overall system that you want to look at in terms of performance, that's, to me, the most valuable aspect."
"Technical support is quite responsive and helpful."
"The benefits would be mostly the ability to diagnose a problem."
"One of the main features is the ability to run the block and file storage from the same system."
"The system manager helps us to manage our NetApp server with a user-friendly GUI instead of a CLI, giving us fast, simplified configurations, simplified management, and extensive administrative capabilities that unlock the power of clustered Data ONTAP and clustered scale-out storage."
"Snapshot is a valuable feature."
"The ease of configuring NetApp FAS series is noteworthy, as they support multiple standards like iSCSI, NFS, Fibre Channel, and NVMe."
"I am impressed with the product's ability to warn us whenever something is wrong with the system. It is connected with Active Directory and Exchange. Whenever there is anything wrong with NetApp, the solution will alert you to an event error, post which you can start to troubleshoot."
"Their technical support is very strong."
"In OnCommand Unified Manager, we can monitor the entire cluster as well as configure data protection through Unified Manager."
"NetApp is competitive in terms of licensing costs."

Cons

"The pain points were, and may still continue to be, the fact that there are multiple components of the product which are installed, you might say, somewhat individually."
"The initial setup for IBM Spectrum Control is a bit complicated. They should also make it easier to integrate and use the Cosmos Analytics tool, which is very complicated."
"It's very complicated and difficult for me, and it's easier with all these installations on one server."
"The pain points were, and may still continue to be, the fact that there are multiple components of the product which are installed, you might say, somewhat individually."
"If we were to add VM level performance being able to monitor VMs on a VM level, then that would be good."
"I would like to see is more information regarding the copy groups (the replication)."
"The solution must support multi-vendor storage."
"The initial setup is complex."
"The technical support is not very good and could be significantly improved."
"There could be better performance in block storage and the GUI could be improved because not every operation is available. You need some operations in the CLI."
"The solution lacks the ability to generate reports from Snapshot."
"The tool is not intuitive and the menus are confusing, especially the snapshot view."
"At present, OnCommand Unified Manager has just the monitoring and data protection features. It would be better to add some features for entire cluster management and storage management."
"My advice to those wanting to implement this solution is that the file storage is good, but the block storage is not good."
"There are always areas for improvement, but they need intuitive browser-based GUI, wizard-driven configuration to get up and running quickly, automated non-disruptive (Data ONTAP) upgrade, storage provisioning and disk aggregate management, CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, FC, and FCoE configuration, Snapshot and SnapMirror management, SnapVault support, storage virtual machine management, monitoring of HA pairs, support for SVMs with Infinite Volume, user interface enhancements, support for storage Quality of Service (QoS), support for all NetApp FAS systems and FlexArray software, support for NetApp All Flash FAS, and built-in reports and dashboard summarizing data around inventory, capacity, and efficiency at the enterprise level."
"ActiveIQ only provides read access and does not allow making changes directly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We were already licensing Spectrum Control. This was one reasons why we went to Control rather than using the other product."
"It is pay for the amount of storage that you are monitoring. The more that we use the tool and like the tool, we may want to extend it to other storage platforms. This is just a matter of cost."
"The solution is reasonably priced."
"When we compare with other similar kinds of products from Dell EMC and HP, the price of NetApp OnCommand is reasonable."
"The tool is cheaper than EMC but more expensive than HP and Pure Storage. I would rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
