We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I really liked that it mapped out processes and was able to attach the data model to the appropriate process. You could map out the process, then when you got down to a specific couple of data elements, you could attach the table in the database that supported that process. You could connect it with erwin Data Modeler for that.""We use erwin Evolve to publish to the website. This allows us to enable publishing our website using parameterisation features. In a very fast, quick way, we can publish a table or chart onto a website.""The feature that stands out for me is the ease of configuring objects and the screens to show them. It's really easy to add a new type of object in this reference. Creating a new type of object, using it, and evolving it a little bit in terms of what we can document about it are the main features that made us decide to use this provider.""There is a model behind it. It's really nice that the Evolve front-end, as it builds a website, keeps those relationships in mind. You can even go to a procedure and see all the applications that are related to it. Then you can go into that application and see all the standard operating procedures that that application is a part of. It's just very connected.""Workgroup Repository collection of data models allows research across models without worry about platform incompatibilities and provides easy KPIs about corporate data assets.""Support for a broad range of data sources from relational to big data to the Cloud.""The most valuable features for us are impact analysis, where I can easily visualize the impact of change.""The initial setup was really straightforward and the deployment was done within one day."

"Great at illustrating advanced topics which helps my team understand what I'm trying to get across.""The diagrams Visio creates are quite impressive in the sense that we can cooperate with more colleagues in one task and see the flow of the process.""Visio makes it easy to communicate your ideas from several areas of your imagination across several domains.""It is stable. I have never experienced any issues.""The usability in general is good. The integration of uploading custom stencils is also very nice.""Just the fact that a majority of the industry uses it, and you've got third-party templates that were created.""It's my understanding that the initial setup is straightforward.""The most valuable feature of Visio is diagram creation. If you have a presentation, you can create your data model using Visio."

Cons
"What they need to do is to consolidate more of their products. For example, I was just looking and I couldn't figure out what erwin DT is. It's on the website but it would help if they could put information together and make it more clear as to what products they have and how they work with other things.""Add some ability to do conditional Visualization on the models and in reports (some ideas) – maybe as a specialized Theme or Diagram or Display.""Business process modelling could be improved.""I would like it to be easier to make changes and then deploy them into production, especially when you have multiple web servers or front-ends. It would be nice to make a change and then have it propagate to the production servers in a more automated fashion.""I would like to see an improvement in the output of the solution.""They have improved the search engine a little bit but it can always be improved more. The more data you put inside it, the more you want to use it.""Evolve is primarily focused on the entity's licenses diagrams, but it would be nice if erwin could integrate case development, so that it shows the ER diagram plus certain inputs on the use cases and how the data is used. That deviates somewhat from the overall scope, so maybe they could call it a different product.""They need to develop Evolve's user experience. For example, MEGA has a useful client view that helps with impact analysis. MEGA provides information about the processes, services, infrastructure, and portfolio of applications in one central view. It lets you see the periphery and relationships among components. This view is impressive, and Evolve doesn't have it."

"It requires a lot of skill to get into it.""When you use a BPA solution you can open an end-to-end process in one window, go down, or go up between layers to different places. You should be able to see descriptions of the steps of the process.""Visio can be more user-friendly.""I would like to see traceability. It doesn't have it. You cannot find one object amongst several sheets of Visio diagrams.""There should be more items available from a variety of other products that can be integrated.""It should natively enable importing diagrams or reference architectures from any of the vendors whose solutions are used by the customer or proposed by solution providers such as DXC""Visio's scalability could be improved. I had a license through my school and it would have been great to be able to collaborate with more people.""It's not the easiest software to use. It's not user-friendly out-of-the-box."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Unless you are a one person shop – always go with the Workgroup edition and Concurrent licensing."
  • "On a yearly basis, our licensing costs are 50,000 euro. There are no additional costs because we are on a SaaS model."
  • "The cost is something like $15,000, per license. But I haven't looked at those numbers in three years. It was over $100,000 to initially set everything up and get it all configured."
  • "The licensing enables you to differentiate between people who edit the content and the people who consume it. We are able to keep the licensing costs down by keeping the "contributor" licenses to a minimum, and we then just roll out the content in a read-only version for the rest of our users."
  • "Yearly, our cost is €100,000."
  • "I think erwin is quite expensive. I have difficulty selling the portal, in fact."
  • "I estimate that we pay between $40,000 and $50,000 a year for the solution, not including the upfront costs to buy things the first time."

  • "It has a lower price point than the competition."
  • "The cost of the software is reasonably priced."
  • "The price is reasonable for individual use but for an organization, the costs is high."
  • "Our license for Visio is including with the Office 365 subscription."
  • "Visio is about a $180 dollars to purchase. It is a one-time licensing fee."
  • "The yearly cost is approximately $400 CAD ($300 USD)."
  • "There are some cheaper as well as free solutions."
  • "I don't have any issue with the pricing. It has a subscription-based model, and the subscription is done on a yearly basis. Of course, we need internal approvals in place."

    Reviews from Real Users

Visio has improved my workflow by making it easy to create charts, diagrams, and essential illustrations to use in my client reports and proposals. It has saved me a lot of time I would otherwise spend creating visuals for clients manually.” - Michael B., Principal Consultant at Lexington Consulting

“I use it for diagramming networks, racks, data centers, data flow applications, etc. It is a useful tool to map data flows, network objects, and computer science technology and to show to clients. It does what I need it to do. It's a tool I've used the longest, so I know it the best, and that's probably the claim to fame.” - Greg S., Director of Solution Architecture at Winslow Technology Group

“We use Visio for architecture modeling. We also use it to facilitate communication with other people. The feature I like most about Visio is that it acts as a facilitator of communication, as it displays information in a way that's easier to understand.” - Guy M., IT/Business Architect at a financial services firm
