Q&A Highlights
Question: Archive verses backup
Answer: Happy to help but need to know quite a lot more to be able to help properly. Can you tell me more about what you want to achieve and why, how long is long term, for compliance, cultural or commercial reasons? What kinds of files are being held, what is the growth rate and more importantly what are the access patterns. If you can give me some response to this I can work out in which way to take my next questions in order to be able to give some real value. Roland

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution scales well.""The source site replication feature is valuable.""It works quickly and is very stable.""We've been using this solution to backup our servers. It is a simple backup and restore data application.""The performance of Dell EMC Avamar is good.""It's stable and offers good performance.""Its stability and deduplication capabilities are most valuable.""We've found the product to be stable."

"We have found the product to be scalable.""The most valuable features of Dell EMC PowerProtect DD are the duplication security and uptime.""It's very competitive in terms of the price and technology. Also, the development team continuously makes updates. The data reduction feature is very useful.""The solution is very scalable.""The most valuable features of this product are its guaranteed reliability and its duplication capability.""Data Domain is an excellent repository that's compatible with a lot of different solutions. Even Veeam Backup recommends sending backup to Data Domain. Space optimization is great. Currently, it guarantees 50-to-1 compression of the application in the same device. In all these years, I never had a client who was unsatisfied with Data Domain. It is a solid appliance with VMware integration, instant access to restore and search, and analytics.""It works within backup windows and has got good deduplication.""This solution has a feature called Domain Boost, which allows for source deduplication and compression."

Cons
"Setup and deployment of this solution is complex and requires expert engineers.""Technical support should be more knowledgeable.""What would make Dell Avamar better is if it can do faster backups because right now, PowerProtect Data Manager is better in this area with its new UI and a new way to implement backups. Customers nowadays also expect more up-to-date solutions, and this is another area for improvement in Dell Avamar. It's not as up-to-date, so I'm counting on PowerProtect Data Manager, but customers who have Dell Avamar don't want to switch because you don't have as many backup problems in Dell Avamar compared to other solutions. What I'd like to see in the next release of Dell Avamar is an updated UI and a different way to manage backups because currently, backup management is a bit heavy for customers using Dell Avamar.""The product could offer more integration capabilities.""Dell Avamar could improve by adding more backup features.""The initial setup is a bit complex and could be simpler.""The solution, in the future, should offer support for mobile.""Some integrations are not in place, such as the email alerts, which are not compatible with Office 365 SMTP gateway."

More Dell Avamar Cons →

"The software from Dell that can be used to operate Data Domain needs to have enhancements made to the user interface. It is too complex.""The price could be improved.""The pricing could be lower.""I would like to see some kind of integration with the ransomware in the next release.""I would like to see integration with public cloud.""The usage of this solution is a bit difficult to develop processes, and it takes a long time to market permits.""We have some problems with backing up on the Power Platform. PowerServer is an IBM product, and it forces us to back up over LAN, which is not suitable for us.""We would like faster instant recovery."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."
  • "It is expensive. The maintenance comes with it for five years. So, you buy the whole thing for five years, and your maintenance is included with it, but it's a big chunk of change upfront. We like capital expenses because we can CapEx them. We pay once every five years, so we spend a big chunk of change. You'd have to divide that out by the five years to come up with how much it costs. It's just about three-quarters of a million dollars for five years."
  • "It's a very high-end solution and comparable to Rubrik and Cohesity."
  • "There is a license required for this solution."
  • More Dell Avamar Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It could be more competitively priced. Its licensing was for five years. Obviously, the support will get renewed at some stage, but that's it."
  • "The price is on the high side."
  • "Becoming more expensive."
  • "The solution is expensive. However, if you pay less you receive less, it is cost-effective."
  • "Pricing for this product could still be improved, though several years ago, its price was very high. When buying an IDPA product such as Dell EMC PowerProtect DD (Data Domain), you don't have to buy anything else, because you'll have an integrated solution: a data domain appliance plus software."
  • "The price of Dell EMC PowerProtect DD could improve, it is expensive."
  • "The price of the backup appliance is slightly expensive. Compared to other vendors, the pricing will be slightly higher."
  • "If we do not move to the cloud solution and stay with our on-premise version we will miss some new features."
