Improved data governance has enabled sensitive data tracking but cost management still needs work
I believe we could improve Databricks integration with cloud service providers. The impact of our current integration has not been particularly good, and it's becoming very expensive for us. The inefficiencies in our implementation, such as not shutting down warehouses when they're not in use or reserving the right number of credits, have led to increased costs. We made several beginner mistakes, such as not taking advantage of incremental loading and running overly complicated queries all the time. We should be using ETL tools to help us instead of doing it directly in Databricks. We need more experienced professionals to manage Databricks effectively, as it's not as forgiving as other platforms such as Snowflake. I think introducing customer repositories would facilitate easier implementation with Databricks.

Analytics and data security needs are met but optimization requires improvement
We are using Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse for analytics in my company The solution is used for analytics and it works for our data security needs. We continue to use it with satisfaction. Optimization should be better. The SQLs are sometimes very slow. I also noticed that Java is not…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Databricks' Lakehouse architecture has been most useful for us. The data governance has been absolutely efficient in between other kinds of solutions."
"The main features of the solution are efficiency."
"Databricks is hosted on the cloud. It is very easy to collaborate with other team members who are working on it. It is production-ready code, and scheduling the jobs is easy."
"The initial setup is pretty easy."
"The tool helps with data processing and analytics with large-scale data or big data since it is associated with managing data at a large scale."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to use SQL directly with Databricks."
"Specifically for data science and data analytics purposes, it can handle large amounts of data in less time. I can compare it with Teradata. If a job takes five hours with Teradata databases, Databricks can complete it in around three to three and a half hours."
"The solution's features are fantastic and include interactive clusters that perform at top speed when compared to other solutions."
"It is an extremely scalable solution since you can dynamically change the resources as some other cloud solutions."
"It is a very stable tool...It is an extremely scalable tool."
"The product has self-repair features."
"The solution is used for analytics and it works for our data security needs."
"The solution integrates well with Power BI."
"It provides Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) capabilities by default to address data security issues."
"The solution is self-securing. All data is encrypted and security updates and patches are applied automatically both periodically and off-cycle."
"Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse is used globally to deliver extreme performance on large Financial data sets."

Cons

"Databricks' performance when serving the data to an analytics tool isn't as good as Snowflake's."
"It would be better if it were faster. It can be slow, and it can be super fast for big data. But for small data, sometimes there is a sub-second response, which can be considered slow. In the next release, I would like to have automatic creation of APIs because they don't have it at the moment, and I spend a lot of time building them."
"I would like it if Databricks adopted an interface more like R Studio. When I create a data frame or a table, R Studio provides a preview of the data. In R Studio, I can see that it created a table with so many columns or rows. Then I can click on it and open a preview of that data."
"While Databricks is generally a robust solution, I have noticed a limitation with debugging in the Delta Live Table, which could be improved."
"Databricks has a lack of debuggers, and it would be good to see more components."
"It would be nice to have more guidance on integrations with ETLs and other data quality tools."
"The API deployment and model deployment are not easy on the Databricks side."
"It should have more compatible and more advanced visualization and machine learning libraries."
"The setup is complex."
"I would like to see an on-premise solution in the future."
"The installation process is complex. Oracle can make the installation process better."
"The initial setup was pretty complex. It was not easy."
"The solution lacks visibility options."
"It is very important the integration with other platforms be made to be as easy as it is with an on-premises deployment."
"My main suggestion for Oracle is the configuration and key values that come for JSON files. When we create a table, especially if you see in our RedShift or some other stuff, if I create a table on top of a JSON file with multiple array columns or superset columns, those column values create some difficulty in Oracle."
"Ease of connectivity could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is okay. It's competitive."
"The solution is based on a licensing model."
"We implement this solution on behalf of our customers who have their own Azure subscription and they pay for Databricks themselves. The pricing is more expensive if you have large volumes of data."
"We find Databricks to be very expensive, although this improved when we found out how to shut it down at night."
"The solution uses a pay-per-use model with an annual subscription fee or package. Typically this solution is used on a cloud platform, such as Azure or AWS, but more people are choosing Azure because the price is more reasonable."
"The pricing depends on the usage itself."
"I am based in South Africa, where it is expensive adapting to the cloud, and then there is the price for the tool itself."
"The cost for Databricks depends on the use case. I work on it as a consultant, so I'm using the client's Databricks, so it depends on how big the client is."
"The cost is perfect with Oracle Universal credit."
"The price depends on the configuration we choose."
"ROI is high."
"In terms of architecture and pricing structure, I feel it is a little bit costly compared to Azure. It's fine compared to RedShift, but compared to Azure, it's a bit pricey when you calculate for one TB storage plus around five hours of reporting with the frequency of 1TB data. The cost adds up, making Oracle a bit expensive."
"We pay approximately $70,000 per month. The cost includes maintenance and support."
"You pay as you go, and you don't pay for services that you don't use."
"The licensing cost of the product can vary since you can integrate it very easily with other products or other cloud products...You pay as you use it, so it is not yearly or monthly payments to be made toward Oracle."
"The solution is expensive."
