Improved data governance has enabled sensitive data tracking but cost management still needs work
I believe we could improve Databricks integration with cloud service providers. The impact of our current integration has not been particularly good, and it's becoming very expensive for us. The inefficiencies in our implementation, such as not shutting down warehouses when they're not in use or reserving the right number of credits, have led to increased costs. We made several beginner mistakes, such as not taking advantage of incremental loading and running overly complicated queries all the time. We should be using ETL tools to help us instead of doing it directly in Databricks. We need more experienced professionals to manage Databricks effectively, as it's not as forgiving as other platforms such as Snowflake. I think introducing customer repositories would facilitate easier implementation with Databricks.

It helps to onboard and enrich data quickly as it does not involve writing scripts or queries, but the transformation functions can be more mature.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have the ability to scale, collaborate and do machine learning."
"It is fast, it's scalable, and it does the job it needs to do."
"The solution offers a free community version."
"The fast data loading process and data storage capabilities are great."
"The load distribution capabilities are good, and you can perform data processing tasks very quickly."
"The setup is quite easy."
"The initial setup phase of Databricks was good."
"Databricks has improved my organization by allowing us to transform data from sources to a different format and feed that to the analytics, business intelligence, and reporting teams. This tool makes it easy to do those kinds of things."
"Customer Service: It's very good."
"The built-in smart analytic tools are the most valuable features for me."
"The most valuable feature are the data transformation functions in the workbook."
"Datameer has around 400 inbuilt functions that are very useful for any beginner and also it has a good visualization which helps end user to see that how the trend is showing."

Cons

"Scalability is an area with certain shortcomings. The solution's scalability needs improvement."
"Databricks is still having some stability issues."
"Support for Microsoft technology and the compatibility with the .NET framework is somewhat missing."
"The integration and query capabilities can be improved."
"We often use a single cluster to ingest Databricks, which Databricks doesn't recommend. They suggest using a no-cluster solution like job clusters. This can be overwhelming for us because we started smaller."
"Databricks has added some alerts and query functionality into their SQL persona, but the whole SQL persona, which is like a role, needs a lot of development. The alerts are not very flexible, and the query interface itself is not as polished as the notebook interface that is used through the data science and machine learning persona. It is clunky at present."
"When I used the support, I had communication problems because of the language barrier with the agent. The accent was difficult to understand."
"There should be better integration with other platforms."
"Although this tool is very good, it has some limitations that I think could be removed in later versions."
"When I run the single license on my MacBook Pro, the memory space can be an issue."
"It needs better integration with other enterprise technologies out of the box."
"It is a good tool from an analysis perspective, but is not suitable for IT."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing costs of Databricks is a tiered licensing regime, so it is flexible."
"We only pay for the Azure compute behind the solution."
"The price of Databricks is reasonable compared to other solutions."
"I do not exactly know the costs, but one of our clients pays between $100 USD and $200 USD monthly."
"The price is okay. It's competitive."
"Databricks is a very expensive solution. Pricing is an area that could definitely be improved. They could provide a lower end compute and probably reduce the price."
"We have only incurred the cost of our AWS cloud services. This is because during this period, Databricks provided us with an extended evaluation period, and we have not spent much money yet. We are just starting to incur costs this month, I will know more later on the full cost perspective."
"My smallest project is around a hundred euros, and my most expensive is just under a thousand euros a week. That is based on terabytes of data processed each month."
