  • Ease of Deployment: For the most part, users of Commvault felt that unless you have a high level of technical knowledge, it is rather difficult to deploy and that not just anyone can set up this solution. The opposite is true of Veeam Backup Replication, whose reviewers feel that for the most part it is easy and straightforward to deploy.
  • Features: Commvault has many valuable features, including its ability to integrate with many different platforms, encryption to protect from ransomware, as well as its compression and duplication features. However, users say that the Commvault console is rather complex and takes a long time to learn. They contend that the console should be easier to use. Additionally, they say that it could use better data backup for the Office 365 platform. Among Veeam Backup Replication’s most valuable features are its ability to scale up in a variety of environments, its adaptability, and its intuitive interface. Reviewers of Veeam Backup Replication feel that there is much room for its scalability to improve, though. They also write that Veeam Backup Replication’s reporting feature could use some work.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is just about as flexible as you can get; simple. You can put it anywhere you want. You can put it on-prem or in your cloud. I could see where a team that's looking for more of a follow the bouncy ball type of solution might get a little confused. "Oh, no. What do you mean I might have to do it this way or I can't do it that way?" Sometimes, people just want to be told what to do. For an enterprise environment, like we are at NDOT, everything we do is not standard. It is not industry standard; it is not normal. We have all kinds of one-offs. We do need flexibility in the solutions that we get. I will say that Metallic has been extremely flexible in that sense, where we are able to follow the bouncy ball if we wanted to. Obviously, we didn't. We did it our way and Metallic, as a whole solution, provided that to us with no issues.""It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice.""The most valuable features of Commvault Hyperscale X are the full responsibilities inclined in conversion with high responsibility rates.""The backup and restore capabilities are key. The most useful things to us about Commvault, in general, is the breadth of the applications that it can protect as well as the features inside of it, like deduplication and encryption. When people get their data encrypted, Commvault has a way to tell if somebody is being attacked through a cybersecurity threat because their data changes. So, Commvault has what they call honeypot files out there to look to see if anybody is changing these files. Only Commvault knows which files those are, so nobody should be messing with those files. If it changes, then it will alert you to say, "Oh, I potentially have somebody messing with my files." It will alert you to something going on in your environment that probably shouldn't be happening. We deploy that with all our customers so they have this capability as well.""It's the leader in backup and archiving.""The product is a reliable solution.""I like the product because of its simplicity and the fact that it provides one single interface for managing everything, including storage, data, and policies.""A very stable and scalable platform (you can backup/restore/protect a couple of MBs or hundred of TBs as well from the same console/platform)."

"They provide good technical support and we are satisfied with the support we have received.""The most valuable feature is the ability to restore the VMs into a test environment.""The most valuable feature of Veeam Backup & Replication is the ease of use.""Initially setting up the product is easy.""It is a rock-solid backup solution. That's all, and that's what we were asking for.""The user interface is good and it is very easy to use.""Veeam Backup Replication is stable I have not had any problems.""The most valuable aspects are the latest features in version 12.1, which introduced enhanced security features."

Cons
"The new HTML5-based management portals are very nice, but do not yet have all of the features of the Java-based client.""This is not a very high standard product.""I would assess the Command Center as a very useful but sometimes difficult tool. It is multipurpose. It has all the features of logging and monitoring, especially for the actual setup. For us, it is easy because we work daily with it, but for customers who only use it once a week, they sometimes have some difficulties. Command Center is not user-friendly for beginners.""Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues.""I would like to see some of the code execute a little bit better when I add new licenses and assign licenses to users. I'd like to see that information update a little quicker.""The reporting is complicated and should be simplified in an upcoming release.""For simpler environments, they have some templates for startups. Possibly for a smaller environment, they need to do more automatic configuration and selections of users who want to do backups. This is mainly for smaller environments. I would like them to have the same system fit for all environments: small and big environments. Currently, we have to do a lot of configuration of the layout, which takes time. This solution is appropriate for enterprise-level enterprise, but I would like it to be easier to use for SMB environments.""The solution needs better Office 365 data backup management."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"The patching can be quite difficult at times.""Veeam Backup & Replication could improve by making it more user-friendly.""In the past, Veeam had a host-based license, but now it will be part of Microsoft's core license. I don't like this licensing model. Host-based licensing is better for my system. Maybe so other organizations prefer the core-based.""Veeam doesn't have the reporting part quite right. Its data visualization isn't as slick as other solutions like Veritas. For example, in Veritas, you can see a calendar that shows you which days are backed up. Veeam lacks features like that.""There is a lot of room for improvement, but the primary issue we have is that it's not built for the cloud.""I prefer a software backup solution that allows me to easily define my origin data, including data files, folders, and virtual machines.""In Linux, I suggest you backup for a PostgreSQL database.""The pricing could be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”
