Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Good intrusion prevention, firewall, and VPN capabilities
Check Point Power-1 (EOL) has reached the end of its useful life, yet at the time, they could to make some changes such as: * Integration in the cloud. It is the new trend, however, Check Point has already contemplated this and already has its own cloud device. * Automation. As the automatic creation and application of policies, this would have been very beneficial. * Multi-factor authentication would have been a plus in security at the time. They must also make some improvements in their support departments since they do not comply with the SLAs that they provide.

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use it to avoid unwanted traffic."
"Fortinet FortiGate is easy to use. Anyone can easily maintain it."
"We found FortiGate better, and we switched everything, decommissioned all SonicWall firewalls, and now benefit from clear licensing where we know the price without complex user-based or function-based subscriptions."
"We are using this solution to filter communication to and from the website or our site, and we also use it to create a VPN connection for all of our sites in the world."
"The features that I have found most valuable are that it is good to use, and most importantly, the pricing, and the customer especially likes the discount when they trade up or something like that."
"The best feature of Fortinet FortiGate is value for money. It is very easy to deploy and scale. It saves us costs and increases bandwidth throughput."
"Fortinet FortiGate IPS has helped increase the efficiency of our network operations and we are experiencing fewer queries in the network and security domain."
"The solution is user-friendly and easy to operate."
"The VPN allows users to connect remotely and securely."
"In my opinion it is right product at enterprise level network to protect the user and server from external and internal threats and attacks"
"The solution is 100% free to use, offers a lot of helpful plugins, is easy to use, and has an elaborate GUI."
"pfSense is superior in terms of defending against attacks."
"Centralized administration with multiple services, which allows for execution in several important functionalities of information security."
"The product makes our business more secure."
"We used Watchguard and Endian, but pfSense is the most complete for layer 3 firewalls."
"A very stable product that lasts over time, easy to understand, and administer."
"pfSense makes everything easier compared to Cisco or Fortinet."
"The flexibility is very good; we have a lot of possibilities."

Cons

"We had a minor problem where there was a major system upgrade on the hardware platfrom and the Mac client was not available as soon as it might have been. The PC client was available immediately, but we had to wait a month or so, before there was a mac client. I was slightly irritated that it was not ready on time, but it was eventually resolved."
"I don't like that anything more than very basic reporting is not included. You have to buy their cloud module that's an add-on for getting more customized reporting."
"We would like to see an upgrade to the VPN feature, we are using the VPN from outside of our office and there is a limitation to 10 connections, more connections would be suitable."
"We would like to see a better training platform implemented."
"There are SD-WAN network monitoring, SD-WAN features, Industrial Databases, Internet of Things, Detection, etc., however, we do have not licenses for those features. We thought that if you bought a product, you should have all of the features it offers. Why should you need to make so many extra purchases to enable features? They should have one price for the entire offering."
"MTBF: Hardware failure is more common when compared to SonicWall or Cisco ASA."
"The user interface of the Fortinet FortiGate management console could be more intuitive and user-friendly, and the log analysis and reporting features could be enhanced to provide more flexibility and customizable insights."
"There's a limitation wherein you can only have about 30 virtual or secondary IPs on a particular interface."
"Multi-factor authentication would have been a plus in security at the time."
"I have to pay Check Point for every new service I integrate in the firewall and it also has license related issue which needs to renew every years."
"pfSense is very flexible, but my only drawback in terms of flexibility is that it is web GUI-driven."
"If I had to change internal providers, I might have some difficult times."
"The pfSense product is very powerful in layer 3 but you must add some products to match a viable commercial product which generally has all the functions integrated in one hardware system (proxy, antivirus, etc.)."
"The portal is still not well-tuned. There are still issues regarding implementation and its effectiveness. But besides that, everything else is great, from the purchase to implementation, setup, etc. Only the portal needs a lot of work."
"ClamAV AntiVirus can cause some crashes. That service should be improved."
"More regular patch updates, because this is very important for a firewall."
"The hotspot and the portal feature in this solution are not stable for WiFi access; we use it at least once or twice every day and it crashes."
"Currently, you deploy it, and it performs as expected, but there are no analytics or reporting capabilities to extract information from the firewall, generate a report, and engage stakeholders in discussions about network connectivity issues, concerns, or upgrades."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The cost has increased since the update so I would rate it eight out of ten."
"The price of Fortinet FortiGate could improve, it is expensive."
"The setup cost was good. The Egyptian pound is declining, and upgrading Fortinet FortiGate yearly costs about $2000 USD, which equals one hundred Egyptian pounds. I maintain a business relationship with the vendor and receive support from them."
"It is around $50,000 per month."
"When comparing the price of Fortinet FortiGate SWG to other solutions it is expensive. The price could be better."
"The pricing is perfect."
"Compared to Palo Alto, which we have used in the past, pricing and licensing are okay."
Information not available
"The pricing is reasonable."
"It's a very good solution, but it's a bit too expensive for private use."
"They have a free community version and a paid version. The free version works if you are a home user who needs a fixed cost, but that's not my use case."
"I will not call it a cheap tool, but it is very cost-efficient."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"The tool is flexible; even the free, open-source version offers many features. From a cost perspective, even the subscription model for commercial support isn't too costly. However, it's important to have someone knowledgeable about Netgate pfSense to take advantage of it. While there are online resources, a professional or someone experienced can get much more out of the solution. I've heard that the IPS/IDS licenses and other features can be costly."
"PfSense's pricing is reasonable. However, support is relatively expensive for smaller customers, and you need to pay per device to get it. So if Customer A is having an issue, I have to get support, and then I have to get support for Customer B, and so on. It would be nice as a managed services provider to get support for my company rather than individual devices."
"Netgate pfSense is a cost-effective option. If you're not using VPN, you can acquire a decent embedded PC for around a hundred dollars and install pfSense on it, effectively creating a robust firewall solution. With this setup, you can achieve a throughput of two hundred to three hundred megabits per second (Mbps) without any issues, provided you're handling relatively simple rules. The level of performance depends on the specific requirements and tasks."
