Impact modeling boosts service mapping efficiency with great technical support
The biggest benefit in my area is impact modeling. Impact modeling helps to map a service that has different applications in it, with those applications having interdependencies with each other. When changes, incidents, problems, and so on occur, it will show exactly where the issue is, helping you to find the root cause much faster. This helps all organizations reduce their mean time to resolution.

Allows us to determine the exact placement of assets based on the building maps and the room details
In my experience, I believe that the key concern is the pricing strategy of the solution. Instead, other solutions are much more cost-effective. Previously, Device42 has altered the pricing model to include a subscription fee which I see as very costly. They should change their pricing strategy and license scheme, conduct market research and ensure that they provide the right product in the market at the right price.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution helps us manage, escalate, and solve incidents."
"The most valuable feature of the solution includes all of its components since they act as the authentication system of the product."
"This product is good because it allows us to receive proper responses to business emails anywhere and anytime. It helps in effective communication with employees. The solution is stable. The product is scalable. The initial setup is straightforward. I recommend BMC Remedy, especially for its automation capabilities."
"You can develop plugins in different languages, and the workflows can be easily developed depending on the user's needs."
"It will simplify handling tasks by providing shortcuts and automating the generation of requests and tickets, including their categorization."
"The toolset is mature, easily integrable with various technologies due to its maturity, and has great scalability."
"BMC Remedy Asset Management is pretty easy for quite a lot of functions."
"The most valuable BMC Remedy Asset Management are the dashboards and reports for the CIO."
"The asset inventory is great because previously we had devices all over the place. We have been able to do multiscans to find devices that we didn't know about, which was great."
"The Insights+ component is useful for us because it does business application mapping and helps us visualize it. It saves us time because we don't have to hunt for data."
"Device42 has everything in one place and links it altogether. This helps when you need to figure out where things are going wrong, where things are happening, or how everything is linked together."
"The solution has some very good relational capabilities that show us how certain devices relate to each other and how some of our environment actually works together."
"The topology layout is the most valuable feature."
"The most helpful feature in Device42 was the import feature, where you can seamlessly import your information into the configuration database manager."
"One of the most valuable features in my experience is the precise tracking of hardware devices and their locations registered in the solution. The solution allows to determine the exact placement of assets based on the building maps and the room details. This feature has allowed us to gain upper hand on the customers and provide them with a great satisfaction because they can visually see the arrangement of their assets within the organisation or building."
"They've also just created some new interactive dashboards. CEOs can see and interact with the data rather than scrolling through endless Excel worksheets to find what they need."

Cons

"In BMC Remedy, integration is a problem and even APIs are not available."
"The tool's GUI is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"The product's scalability is one area with certain shortcomings that need to be considered for improvement."
"Continuous improvement is recommended."
"There is room for improvement regarding the customization as it tends to lag in terms of flexibility, particularly in comparison to competitors."
"When it comes to CMDB, to be able to manage the data, you have to have Atrium integrator, another integrated tool."
"If a user isn't using an out-of-the-box configuration, it can get a bit complex."
"The tool can be expensive for mid-market businesses, making it an area that can be considered for improvement by BMC Remedy."
"The dependency mapping can be quite slow sometimes, if you've got a lot of things connecting to services. It can be very slow to build up the map."
"The reporting could be better. The Insights+ component is an improvement, but they even admit it isn't the greatest. The documentation on their website could also be improved, but Device42 is constantly changing, so the documentation would have to change almost daily."
"In my experience I believe that the key concern is the pricing strategy of the solution. Instead other solutions such as lanweber are much more cost effective. Previously, Device42 operated on perpetualysis without any fees. But recently they have altered the pricing model to include a subscription fee which I see as a very costly affair. Therefore I would like to suggest that they evaluate their pricing strategy and licence scheme, conduct a market research and ensure that they provide the right product in the market at the right price."
"A con for Device42 is that Kubernetes integration is lacking. You pay for 10,000 spot licenses and if you're spinning up a Kubernetes cluster, or four or five or six Kubernetes clusters like we do, you're going to have 5,000 or 6,000 nodes in each of those, doing different types of business things."
"Configuring rPDUs in the data center for Device42 required us to add multiple discovery jobs. The rPDUs were referred to the ISPDUs and daisy-chained. They would automatically assign a unique SMP port, but Device42 didn't allow SMP ranges, so we had to create a discovery job for each rPDU individually. We submitted a feature request to mitigate that."
"For the iPhone, the device diagram cannot be downloaded. You have to go to each device and download the device diagram for that device. E.g., suppose there are a 1000 or 2000 servers. You cannot go to each server or device to download a device diagram for each device. There should be a one-click solution for downloading all device diagrams."
"The solution’s automatic IT asset discovery and inventory functionality functions pretty well. There could be some improvement if there were some automated scripts to get it off the ground. I know it takes a bit of effort to get all of various managed devices into one place. We have to go and change how they are managed and make sure they are all linking up correctly so they can be tracked in Device42. Some type of automated script for each to get over that initial activation."
"If I want to delete an asset from a cabinet it does take a while. And if I'm doing it in bulk — say, for example, if we have one cabinet that has 20 servers in — if I want to remove all 20 servers, I have to do them individually, which is a bit time-consuming. If there were a way that I could just bulk-remove everything from there, that would definitely save some time."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"BMC no longer sells Remedy separately. They've transitioned to selling the BMC Helix platform. Remedy itself is nearing end-of-support."
"BMC Remedy is worth its price."
"It is an expensive tool."
"The product is costly. On one to ten points, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the product's price as nine."
"The pricing is on the expensive side."
"With the product, you can either go for a yearly or a perpetual licensing model."
"The tool is expensive."
"The licensing model of BMC Remedy Asset Management should improve. It is expensive and it is difficult to understand."
"Functionality-wise, Device42 is on par with industry standards, but price-wise, the solution is expensive. I'm rating the pricing for the solution as eight out of ten."
"It's in the top-three most expensive solutions in terms of cost, but it has all the features that are needed."
"On a yearly basis, our licensing is $10,000. However, our license is now nearly full with devices. We need the next bigger license with 5,000 devices, which will cost us $19,000. We pay for a set of licenses, a maximum number of devices, and a maximum number of IP addresses. We have the smallest amount of features, which is enough for us at this time."
"The product cost is low. It is quite cheap."
"The problem with using other vendor, like BMC, is the pricing. The price is so horrible and nobody wants to pay this money."
"We pay $100,000 per year."
"I am not involved in its pricing, but I have seen their plans during a discussion with the customer. For 500 servers, they were asking 50,000 USD. The cost of BMC Discovery was less than half. For the same thing, they were charging only 10,000 USD. Its pricing needs to be improved. As compared to other discovery tools, such as BMC Discovery and ServiceNow Discovery, its price is a little bit higher."
"Our licensing costs are on a yearly basis."
