Brings data together from multiple platforms and optimizes cross-environment orchestration
The features of Control-M that I like the most include the ability to easily integrate or bring in different platforms into Control-M. For instance, AWS, mainframe, TWS, and something that's running on Autosys can all be brought into Control-M, converted to how Control-M runs it, and then the batch can be executed. This centralizes various applications in Control-M, which doesn't just have to handle batch processes, but also other tasks like reporting on required data. I find this functionality very useful and the setup is impressive, with more advancements yet to come. With Control-M, my company has achieved several measurable improvements since I started. The metrics indicate that the number of failures has dropped, and we have addressed the issue of excessive false alerts that I encountered when I joined. Previously, we received an overwhelming number of alerts daily, but now we manage to maintain that at a normalized level, perhaps around five to fifteen alerts, depending on running core batches and their setup.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It does provide a lot of flexibility, especially with the application and integration component that they have."
"The initial setup is largely straightforward."
"Control-M has improved our service levels on pretty much any aspect."
"The most valuable features are the managing of file transfers and the product keeping up with technology."
"Control-M can cross all platforms and offers integration for container and cloud solutions."
"We use Control-M for maintenance on our Oracle and SQL Server databases. It automates maintenance on packages, including standard procedures on the databases themselves, snapshots, checking integrity, verifying the RDBMS of the databases, etc. It ensures they aren't clogged and that they are running smoothly and that there aren't any jobs stuck, eating up the performance of the server or any of the CPU cores."
"Promotions between environments, as well as local, mass update, versioning, and self-service."
"Control-M has helped us resolve issues 70% to 80% faster."
"When we had this product set up, it helped us reduce the backlog by 40%, which helped us engage in other productive tasks for the organization."
"This product helped me a lot for deployments day and night."
"We successfully migrated over 1500 websites using these products."
"By using RepliWeb and custom scripts pre- and post-deploy to manage load balancing and application pools, we can deploy our websites with zero downtime."

Cons

"It can be very labor-intensive to get this information out."
"Everybody's biggest gripe is the reporting capability option. It is a gripe because there is a lot of information in Control-M, but the solution doesn't have a good reporting tool to extract that information. Now, if you want all that information, you need to rely on another third-party BI tool to extract the information out of Control-M."
"I have only encountered stability issues with the base installation; their product development team supplies fix packs for bugs."
"Another need we have is that Control-M MFT also supports commercial file transfer protocols such as CA-XCOM."
"It’s well suited for anywhere and anyone, but it comes with a cost; it is quite pricey."
"I believe that the API should be upgraded with security control from the DM. There is Currently no security for the app API solution."
"The unifying features between Control-M for different platforms needs improvement. The scheduling options on the Control-M mainframe jobs are different than they are on our Linux server. There are a few differences here and there."
"BMC support is clueless on the new issues that arise."
"It failed sometimes and I had to restart the services."
"The setup was complex for the administrators to get their head around how the templating worked."
"Maybe it would be great if the tool could have an analytics dashboard, with the total commitments and the number of rollbacks in a timeframe."
"They should also study banking products for file transfers like Sterling Gateway Connect Direct/Express and incorporate it with them."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Initially, our licensing model was based on the number of jobs per day. That caused some issues because we were restricted to a number. So at our renewal time we said, 'We want to convert from number of jobs to number of endpoints.' That cost us extra money but it gave us additional capabilities, without worrying about the number of jobs."
"The pricing is moderate, not too low or too high compared to other solutions."
"BMC Control-M Managed File Transfer has reasonable pricing. What you pay for is the task or job, and as it's a module, it's complimentary, so you save about twenty percent of the job cost."
"It is a little bit expensive."
"In our environment, pricing depends on the total number of maximum jobs that can run, which is fine. Therefore, if the number of jobs increases, then the licensing fees will increase."
"Its pricing is a little bit high. They could provide an enterprise-level license for an unlimited number of jobs. Currently, it is based on the number of jobs, and if you exceed the number of jobs, there are charges. For example, if your license is for 3,000 jobs per day, but you run 3,050 jobs, you will have to pay for the extra 50 jobs. They charge $120 per job. So, it is too costly."
"Pricing can be steep, but you get what you pay for."
"Compare to other tools Pricing and licensing was more. It should be decrease."
