Microsoft Power BI has many features and there is not a lot to improve. However, the licensing can be confusing. When deciding between Pro and Premium, I find it difficult to distinguish what features are offered by Pro and what features are offered by Premium, including the particular differences to choose between both licensing models. Additionally, some features such as DAX, which I mentioned previously, involve DAX calculations and complex data modeling, which are somewhat advanced and not easily understandable. Prior knowledge is required or you need to go through the documentation. If the documentation is made comprehensive so that anyone with no knowledge on DAX can easily use it by going through the documentation, it would be really helpful. Additionally, if the integration with non-Microsoft tools is improved and performance is optimized, then Microsoft Power BI can become a top-ranked visualization tool. The user experience with Microsoft Power BI is quite good. The intuitive user interface makes it easy for both technical and non-technical users to create reports. However, only the advanced features are somewhat complex, and if the documentation is improved, it can be easily accessible.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's allowed us to implement High Performance Work teams who periodically monitor KPIs, as well as improving the infrastructure and overall work methodology."
"My primary uses of this solution are BI reporting using SQL server reporting, Power BI online reports, and BI dashboards."
"The most valuable features of Microsoft BI are the variety of possibilities to connect to various data sources. The visualizations are easily done, have useful rollover functions, and there are continuous updates being made to the system. You can benefit from the various improvements."
"The solution is easy to use."
"We initially used Tableau because our data was an internal data source, and now all of our data is migrated to tool environments, that the Power BI is more comfortable with."
"The most effective feature of Microsoft Power BI for data analysis is the ability to use Power Query directly from Excel. Power BI's integration capabilities impacted our data management by allowing us to push all reporting down to the end user, giving them the capability to perform "what if" scenarios and discover and validate their own data without needing to refer to IT. Additionally, it provided insights that we couldn't get from Oracle Cloud. We wrote an extract routine to transfer our Oracle Cloud database to Power BI, which was a game changer in terms of giving people confidence in the finances."
"The most valuable feature of Power BI is its ability to provide customized visualizations and insights tailored to specific business needs."
"The most valuable feature of Microsoft BI is its visualization and its ease of use."
"With the out-of-the-box Data Platform and Business Intelligence ecosystem, you get the entire platform with a single license."

Cons

"Pricing needs to be brought down."
"They asked you to pay if you want to synchronize more than eight times, you would have to go to a Power BI enterprise license, which is much more costly."
"Areas of Power BI that could be improved are the learning curve for developers who come from non-technical backgrounds."
"I have found that some issues exist, indicating room for improvement in scalability."
"The Power Query feature needs to be improved to handle large amounts of data. This feature is also slow for large data transfers making it better to use some kind of script."
"From any improvement perspective, I want the product to be made available to users free of cost...The stability and scalability of the product can be better."
"I found data cleaning in the solution to be quite difficult. If I could add a feature, I'd include Excel's Flash Fill function. This allows you to set a formula for one row and column and automatically apply it to thousands of rows, making data sorting much easier."
"The DAX in Microsoft BI is quite difficult."
"I face performance issues with Microsoft Power BI, which are unsolvable. There is a lack of features between the on-premises and cloud version, which poses a challenge for me."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The solution is priced well for what they offer. However, the premium version is very expensive."
"Microsoft BI is not expensive."
"Microsoft Power BI has reasonable pricing."
"I would rate them 4 out of 5 for their current pricing. There are no additional costs to the standard licensing fees."
"The solution’s pricing is reasonable."
"It is based on the usage. If you're using it, you pay for it, and if you're not using it, you stop paying for it."
"Our license is paid yearly and we have found that we have to be careful not to over-extend our usage in order to avoid upgrading our capacity plan."
"This solution came free, it was offered by Microsoft with our E3 license."
