It's given us the ability to quickly plot data with an expansive set of graphs and data blending capabilities.
For this product, we actually incorporated the dashboarding capabilities into an application we are building for one of our clients. Our clients love the dashboarding and analytics capabilities that it provides. BIME has allowed our organization to quickly chart data after we built a successful data management and warehousing capability. Essentially, it is the tip of the iceberg, but an essential one nonetheless.

Microsoft Power BI has many features and there is not a lot to improve. However, the licensing can be confusing. When deciding between Pro and Premium, I find it difficult to distinguish what features are offered by Pro and what features are offered by Premium, including the particular differences to choose between both licensing models. Additionally, some features such as DAX, which I mentioned previously, involve DAX calculations and complex data modeling, which are somewhat advanced and not easily understandable. Prior knowledge is required or you need to go through the documentation. If the documentation is made comprehensive so that anyone with no knowledge on DAX can easily use it by going through the documentation, it would be really helpful. Additionally, if the integration with non-Microsoft tools is improved and performance is optimized, then Microsoft Power BI can become a top-ranked visualization tool. The user experience with Microsoft Power BI is quite good. The intuitive user interface makes it easy for both technical and non-technical users to create reports. However, only the advanced features are somewhat complex, and if the documentation is improved, it can be easily accessible.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Ability to connect all data sources (databases, online services, files, BigData)"
"The ability to paint a picture in any shape or form the user wants which can empower decision-making."
"Data importing from multiple sources was particularly useful for combining online and offline data, as well as across different analytical platforms (Google Analytics and Omniture)."
"Our business is very fast pace, so live numbers help us on a daily basis figure out how to spend our time."
"BIME has accelerated Treehouse’s ability to execute on high visibility products by significantly decreasing the time to market for our products, especially during periods of rapid prototyping."
"I can recommend using BIME Analytics as it's definitely a very useful and powerful tool."
"The virtualization of Microsoft BI is very good."
"We find Power BI is more direct, it is much easier to connect to other data sources and so forth."
"My advice for anybody who is considering this tool is that if you want to move to a self-service BI, this is probably the best tool available right now."
"Data integration is very useful in Power BI. It lets me collect data from many sources. For example, I can get data from Oracle databases and SQL Server databases at the same time."
"It's the analytic engine in terms of the interface on the Power BI environment, as opposed to pivot tables, and it's a mobile solution."
"Power BI pricing is generally considered more affordable than Tableau."
"Easy to use and the visualization is valuable."
"With MSBI, we realized automation from data loading, transformation and reporting."

Cons

"Currently, I have to download the data-set for analysis and it is difficult to deliver outputs with BIME concurrently."
"Although we were able to provide dashboards to our customers, it required that we create the dashboards with the essential analytics."
"Customer Service is non existent."
"Whereas BIME clearly surpasses Excel on many fronts with regards to interactive charting, there are areas where small formatting features are not available."
"The V6 should be better in terms of navigability and ergonomy"
"I wish that it had better database management mapping features."
"They can improve it in terms of rule-based security. Currently, it has very limited rules."
"Compared to other applications, like Tableau, Microsoft BI doesn't have as many functions that allow you to do a more in-depth analysis and represent the findings."
"The integration with third-party products could be more stable."
"In my opinion, the software is a little bit limited in terms of the flexibility it offers, with regard to the design of the visualization."
"The DAX in Microsoft BI is quite difficult."
"We need more integration capabilities."
"For very big companies with large-scale data and many rules, there would be speed issues with Power BI, so I won't recommend Power BI for organizations where 2,000 or 4,000 computers are connected and there are multiple branches with data coming from different countries."
"We have used other solutions and the reporting functionality should be user-friendly and have a drag and drop feature should be available, but Microsoft BI doesn't have these features. When you are creating reports and you can't change as a user. Every time you need one developer or one technical person to make the changes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Downloading Power BI Desktop is free."
"Price is the best feature of Power BI! You get a lot of value for the price. If you know how to use it, it's a great BI solution for your money."
"The costs are small and the benefits are high."
"Its price is very low. It is like $10 per user, per month. The clients pay for their own licenses. It is not on us. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees. That's the beauty. With other systems, you need to spend a couple of thousand dollars just to get started, and then you need to spend $500 per year for the license, which becomes much more costly. You have a system here where for $120 to $140 a year, you can start with two people and start developing and deploying. You can see why the cost difference is huge, especially when you are on a low scale, like us, and you're not building something very huge."
"There is room for at least 45% discount as compared to the initial price."
"Licensing fees are paid on a yearly basis."
"The cost of licensing depends on the number of people that are going to be using the reports, and we are satisfied with it at $10 per user."
"Its licensing cost is very high. It is $20 per user, which is very high, but it is a good product, so you pay for it."
