Provides ransomware protection, does good reporting, and is close to perfect for our use case
The main challenge that I have had with it was no line of support, but I've anyway taken away the Linux machine that I was using. So, I don't need that anymore. I'm migrating my Exchange to the cloud. So, I probably will stop using the exchange backup side of it sometime next year, but the rest of the virtual machines that I have on-premises are very well covered by it. To be able to back up my online Exchange, I know there is a backup in the cloud, but I prefer to have something physical with something on my premises as well. It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it.

Ease of backup and restore improves data management with reliable support
The interface of BDRSuite Backup & Replication is pretty intuitive. Regarding their marketing strategy, I'm very bad at marketing. I always get a little edgy when people try to shove their product in my face. There are two sides to the story. If you don't know something exists, you might not even start to look for it unless you really know that you need it. If you are explicitly looking for a solution, then you'll find it. People that don't know that they should do backup don't have a place in IT. I rate BDRSuite Backup & Replication 8.5 out of 10.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I get my reports. It is generally very reliable. Unless there is a major change, it doesn't stop backing up. I've got my server room set up with everything connected to the same power, and I never have power issues or failures of backups because a sub-site has gone off."
"I would definitely recommend this solution to others."
"The most valuable features of BackupAssist are ease of use, configure is simple, and more importantly, ease of recovery. If you needed to do a complete system recovery or another recovery it is straightforward."
"We managed to have good backups which were easy to recover, and easy backup of MS Exchange and SQL databases."
"I find BackupAssist very convenient to work on and I really like its user interface."
"I have found that the backups are usually very successful."
"What you want is software that can be relied upon at the moment when a server goes down, you can backup simply and reliably, BackupAssist fulfilled this criterion."
"We can configure the notifications themselves so that the right people get the notifications. This is very helpful. It allows key stakeholders to know if backups have happened and to remind each other to check the backups if something is not right."
"The automated backup of multiple virtual machines. We can back up two hypervisors, one is Microsoft Hyper-V and the other one is VMware Hypervisor."
"Of the software that I license, I feel I get more value from this than any others."
"We invest in the backup so the continuity of the data is not affected."
"Their technical support is very good to work with, as they are able to propose alternate solutions to problems that work well for us."
"Technical support gets an A-plus."
"You should definitely consider using this tool, as an off-site backup option."
"Once it's set up and working, it's just working."
"The biggest improvement has been the ability to allow us as an MSSP to continuously gather extra revenue from this software, so we can use it to back up our clients' data offsite."

Cons

"Many solutions become stagnant over time. However, BackupAssist has been consistent in updates but they must continue to innovate and improve to avoid stagnation."
"The solution needs a dashboard or some form of central control from which you can manage all backups."
"The solution needs a dashboard or some form of central control from which you can manage all backups."
"It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it."
"One issue I had with this program, was that I couldn't get it to back up my Linux virtual machines."
"It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it."
"In the future I would like to see more support for Linux."
"Has a few problems working with snapshots time-outs and failed backups."
"There is a drawback in the whole approach about how the licenses are managed."
"I have had issues where it was working and then it stopped and I had to diagnose what had changed or gone wrong to get it back up."
"There are bugs. For one month, I encountered a big issue where my storage pool could not be identified. My backups were stopped because they were not able to locate the storage pool. So, I removed the settings and started the backups again. The application is not stable. It needs some debugging and testing on the build side of production."
"The system died twice and it was apparently the result of corrupted disk sectors."
"The reports are at a basic level and there is room for improvement there. It only has historical reports and VM backup job-level reports."
"The reporting can use some improvement."
"With the new VMware licensing issues and price concerns, we are switching to the backup from within the virtual machine. This gives us fewer options, but it is necessary."
"It would be a great improvement if they can give a console to control the systems."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's on a yearly basis, but I'm not the one who does the licensing on that. I don't have any figures, but it's on a yearly basis, and I believe it's reasonable."
"There's a yearly licensing cost. The costs might be around $2000 USD annually."
"The product pricing here in Zimbabwe is good, I cannot complain."
"The cost of the solution is reasonable and there are add-on options that can be purchased. I have used other solutions that are a lot more expensive that are not as good. The ability to get support is very simple and very reasonable from a cost standpoint."
"The pricing is good. The tough part is estimating storage needs."
"The pricing is very good."
"It is affordable. It has value with respect to the features included in the software."
"The product's pricing is of good value. It was much more affordable than the alternative solution to it, which was Veeam. That would be the closest competitor, and between those two, Vembu was much more affordable. It seemed reasonable for what we needed to do."
"The subscription model that we're signed up for is very good. The only thing that is something of a sticking point is the fact that you can't do PO-based licensing. It's all just credit card."
"The license is per unit and is expensive."
"The pricing of Vembu could be better. They have a good product, and I know good products cost money, but they need to find a balance."
"It is very cost efficient, effective. I’d say it's one-third the cost of Veritas when compared to the server backups. I even tried image backups on Acronis, but Acronis is very expensive. So these are some of the key reasons why I opted for it."
