Helps to track the life cycle of products and services, and understand their costs
The tool allows us to track the life cycle of products and resources. When the metadata is set up correctly, we can see where things are in their life cycle and how they fit into our processes. It helps us understand which core processes are active and whether any underlying elements need renewal. We can also keep tabs on the costs. The most beneficial feature has been reporting. Being able to track the life cycle of products and services and understand their costs has been crucial. However, I've also been exploring other features that allow us to evaluate tools from both the business and technical sides. The tool was easy to get started with. Some of the reporting features have been particularly useful for our company management. I've built reports showing the costs of running the company and the processes running beneath them. Additionally, I've used it for lifecycle management from a technical perspective. I discovered a feature I haven't tried yet: exporting data to HTML. This allows for neatly gathered reports in one place where you can search through them via HTML and find what you need.

Effective in terms of validating everything, but sometimes they don't allow us some flexibility and GUI could improve
I would recommend SAP PowerDesigner to others for data architecture management. It provides all the functionalities in terms of data modeling, so it's also a good tool for that. I see trends in terms of data classification, but I don't see this tool with the intelligence to do that automatically. So, like, with artificial intelligence. Overall, I would rate the solution a six out of ten because there are too many validations. Also, I found some gaps in terms of relationships; they didn't appear when you do reverse engineering. Also, this tool lacks artificial intelligence that should be very good in terms of automatically identifying the classification of elements and maybe also to incorporate some artificial intelligence in providing descriptions for each data element included in the solution.

Pros

"The tool allows us to track the life cycle of products and resources. When the metadata is set up correctly, we can see where things are in their life cycle and how they fit into our processes. It helps us understand which core processes are active and whether any underlying elements need renewal. We can also keep tabs on the costs."
"It helps me to model the architecture at an enterprise level."
"I like the connectivity or the lineage between the models and usability."
"It's a stable system. It never crashes."
"I've used the reverse engineering feature a lot. I can take a look at the structure of the database and what relationships it has."
"SAP PowerDesigner is an excellent tool that does what I need it to do. What I like most about it is that it's stable, fast, and easy to understand."
"The feature I found valuable in SAP PowerDesigner is extraction. I also like that my company hasn't faced any issues because of the clear documentation about SAP PowerDesigner."
"The initial setup was very easy."
"I like the property sheet capability and the user-defined attributes that you can set up."
"I mostly work on the conceptual and logical side of things, and I enjoy how easy it is to use."

Cons

"The tool's data lineage could be enhanced. It would be great to see the data flow and understand where it's going within the system."
"We need to understand how the data could be segregated."
"It would be helpful if there were glossary, catalog and governance tools. It would help make it a true end-to-end product."
"The solution itself does not need to be improved. However, they could add support for different languages."
"In the future, I would like to see data manipulation capability where you can actually write SQL queries and manipulate data from directly within the tool."
"One disadvantage of SAP PowerDesigner is that you cannot reverse engineer the ALTER statements, so that's an enhancement or area for improvement I'm looking forward to seeing from the SAP team in the future. That should directly reflect on the physical data models my company builds."
"The focus is more on mainstream development environments, and I see a lack of focus on the open source world. I think SAP PowerDesigner probably interfaces better with SQL Server and Db2 but not with open source databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL."
"Connectivity can be improved because it's not very good."
"I've tried to use Power Designer to bring in images, which didn't work very well at all."
"This product lacks artificial intelligence that should be very good in terms of automatically identifying the classification of elements."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use ADOIT's open-source version."
"The price of the solution is too expensive. When we asked for certain licenses in different countries it was unattainable."
"I bought the software outright and do not pay a licensing fee."
"SAP PowerDesigner is cheaper than eriwin."
"The ROI has been 43%."
"The price of the solution is low."
"Regarding costs, SAP PowerDesigner is pricey, as I've heard from my team manager, which is why the company has been thinking of bringing another solution on board."
"I would like SAP to prove free licenses to professionals that are using the solution. The free version is limited."
"When you purchase the license for SAP PowerDesigner, you have to buy one year of support. The tool is worth the money."
