A good tool that's great for modelling and building heat maps
During the first 18 months, for at least three months, we tried to get some training. We started working on the modeling part and we are still evolving in this tool. There are a few recommendations that have been put to the vendor, and we've gotten some answers and the team is evolving the tool in this space. I don't have anything to complain about right now, although there are a few things that we are discussing with the team who is connecting with the vendor to get that resolved. Specifically, we need to understand how the data could be segregated. We need to know how the enterprise-level metadata and master data could be managed in this tool. There are multiple open questions.

Efficient documentation generation through organized model structure with a good price-performance ratio
Whenever I begin a new project with Sparx, I have to spend time training people on how to use it since it is not straightforward. Although it's a powerful product with plenty of features, it's not easy for even experienced users to find their way without guidance. This is not the most user-friendly solution.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This particular product would be really helpful to model the architecture at an enterprise level."
"The tool allows us to track the life cycle of products and resources. When the metadata is set up correctly, we can see where things are in their life cycle and how they fit into our processes. It helps us understand which core processes are active and whether any underlying elements need renewal. We can also keep tabs on the costs."
"Scalability is not a problem; you can always increase the footprint of what the thing can do because it is so powerful."
"If you are looking for something to just get the job done that does not box you in, then this product is for you, if you are looking for something more, this product grows with you and can address your incremental needs."
"The product overall is quite good."
"Modelling and project-actual-state document generation is, as always, the most critical need of every project, and due to the presenting concept and impact analysis, this is a good tool."
"The most valuable feature is that it provides tuning for multiple layers of enterprise in the business application architecture."
"The features I find most valuable is the ability to create a document and then put it into a OneCare artifact."
"The platform is stable and reliable."
"We are using Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect for model-based system engineering."

Cons

"The tool's data lineage could be enhanced. It would be great to see the data flow and understand where it's going within the system."
"Specifically, we need to understand how the data could be segregated."
"Look and feel."
"I struggled with most of the features for this tool, as did the rest of our architecture team."
"I'd like Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect to be more stable, and have a more improved performance."
"I have found the solution is lacking options. The general usability needs improvement and more compliance to CML definitions."
"In a future release, they should improve portfolio planning."
"For business purposes, this product has some limitations. The user experience and presenting it is challenging."
"In a database-server deployment there are performance/locking issues when multiple users make changes simultaneously."
"Navigating from EA Models to Business Process Models becomes a nightmare if the repository is heavily loaded."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use ADOIT's open-source version."
"This product has a paid license, with a yearly subscription option."
"The license I use is on-premise. We haven't gone to the cloud where we have to pay monthly or something like that. Sparx is cheaper than most similar tools."
"It’s the best deal in town, by far."
"I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten."
"We paid 1200 euros as a once-off cost. All add ons and integrations come at an additional cost."
"In terms of cost, Sparx EA is probably one of the cheapest tools I have ever used."
"Pricing and licensing are suitable even for small companies."
"The licence has a costly upfront fee which gets you access. You have to pay an annual maintenance fee, which is less."
