Ease of developing dashboards and receiving strong technical support have enabled efficient data visualization
Introducing custom features, such as NLP-based reports, is not very good in Tableau. My MD has been asking us for a way to write in natural language to request reports that the system should generate, but that isn't very effective with Tableau. As a developer, I can develop an on-demand report in Python quite easily, but exposing a REST API on the Tableau platform is not a very easy task. AI enablement is an area for improvement for Tableau, and that is something they might have to work upon. I have heard that ThoughtSpot is quite better in this regard, but the cost of ThoughtSpot is much higher. ThoughtSpot has lots of natural language-based report generation features that Tableau lacks.

I can now create more meaningful charts--radar, donut, pareto, scatter, range, point, boxplot, etc., but it doesn't support Linux or commodity hardware.
* The tool is very easy to use, we got on-premise training from Panorama, within days we were proficient enough to play with the tool. * The customer service is very responsive, they answered our queries. * I saw lot of people complaining about the lack of community forum, but they do have a forum which is quite active. * The tool is extremely easy to use, with a click you can import data and create the visualizations. * The things I like most is it supports variety of charts, I was quite bored with my previous BI tool which mostly supported bar, line and pie charts. I can now create more meaningful charts radar, donut, pareto, scatter, range, point, boxplot, etc.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution allows for the possibility for end-users to do their own reporting."
"By deploying Tableau Server with an interactive dashboard built with Tableau Desktop, our company has gone through a journey of enabling self-analysis, and adopting a data-driven decision-making culture."
"Tableau has provided the organisation a means to allow business people to explore their data at their pace."
"I recommended Tableau for the following reasons: truly mature product, price-performance balance, ease of use, lot of flexibilities in regrouping the data on the fly, most of the frequently used calculations are built-in and very easy to use - unlike some other BI tools, which are quite clumsy - and for best interactive data visualization capabilities."
"It is easy to use with very powerful data visualizations."
"The most important thing that people need to know is that Tableau is ONLY a visualization tool (the best in the market)."
"The best part about Tableau is the visualization."
"It is a stable solution."
"The tool is extremely easy to use, with a click you can import data and create the visualizations."

Cons

"In the next release, I would like to be able to have the option to see more raw data that I'm converting on the dashboard."
"It’s a very basic thing, but being able to copy and paste data elements from the screen would be nice."
"If it had a semantic layer, it would be great."
"Developers end-up, many times, scratching their left ear with the right hand, in order to make visualizations more powerful, effective or appealing than off-the-shelf ones."
"The integration with other program languages, like Python, needs to be better."
"We need a Tableau connector to connect to other BI tools like SAP BusinessObjects."
"The data entered into Tableau must be clean. Otherwise, it won't work properly."
"Performance has issues when you get too many users."
"No support for Linux or commodity hardware. Limited support for big data analytics."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of this solution could definitely be lower. It's quite expensive."
"For data extraction and analysis, Tableau is better than any other tool I have used with the same pricing model."
"Its price is a concern. It is more expensive than Power BI. My guess would be that it is $1000 or less per year. We might go for Power BI in the future because of its umbrella with Microsoft licensing. It is much cheaper for us to use Power BI, and some folks will go in that direction because they don't want to pay the higher license."
"I wish there was more of a subscription model with the pricing when it comes to Tableau, so you can get all the latest version upgrades/features if you pay monthly/annually."
"It is reasonable and cheap as compared to other major tools. It has a good price, and people go for it because of its pricing."
"There is a license required, we pay an annual license which is priced fair."
"Its licensing cost should be improved."
"In Korea, the tool's pricing depends on the scale of usage. For instance, it's reasonable for a department with fewer than 50 users to adopt Tableau, like sales. However, the pricing becomes an issue when considering an enterprise solution for a larger user base, say 10,000 people."
