User-level monitoring with near-real-time analytics boosts service availability
The use case is about user-level monitoring and the availability of a service for a user. It's about whether the service is available, its performance, and the type of errors a user is receiving, from a user perspective The functions that Real User Monitor is intended for, which is to provide the…

Unified observability has improved real-time governance and now drives data-led decisions
Log Observer Connect is embedded here, but we are facing some delays in centralized log collection and analysis, which can be further fastened. We are collecting all the data metrics and decision-making insights, but all these data-driven decisions coming from different applications are not connected somewhere. A consolidated form or correlation of these insights is not happening between each other due to which we feel we are missing something significant. Some generalized feedback includes that predictive alerts or alarms which can be integrated with AI-driven alarms and alerting features should be established so that there is AI-driven intelligence and anomaly detection happening with a complete systematic process in service delivery. Application dependencies are huge, and business and operational dashboards should be improved. Right now there are very interactive custom dashboards, and every now and then, the personalization of enhancements keeps happening. KPI monitoring, executive reporting, and analytics have definitely been introduced to a great extent. There are few things in cloud-native monitoring, such as integration with AWS and Azure, where we sometimes do face lags. Those things can definitely be improved upon. I have used Datadog and Dynatrace before using Splunk Observability Cloud. Datadog was definitely recommended by most of our peers because of its very strong comprehensive observability and very strong and unique dashboard systems. Dynatrace was also very good because they have offered a lot of AI-driven analysis methods and processes, which was helping our organization a lot. Since our organization has a very strong IT ecosystem for agriculture, very different kinds of customized things are required.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Real User Monitor has made it easier to drill down and see how users connect to and use our website."
"It is a good product."
"With the solution, you can easily access any issues in your infrastructure."
"The most valuable feature is application performance monitoring."
"The Real User Monitor, with its transaction and synthetic transaction monitoring, is the typical classic in APM cases when the customer would like to do transaction monitoring. Micro Focus scores better where the underlying infrastructure management is also covered by Micro Focus tools."
"Real User Monitoring tools help proactively identify problems before they become critical by monitoring thresholds. There is a threshold and an SOA threshold."
"We use RUM and BSM and so far it has been really good at getting real user transactions from a real user monitor and then tying it to a BSM single view dashboard, where we get the whole realistic picture."
"We found this to be a stable product."
"This product is very stable."
"Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring gives us complete visibility without the need for storage."
"We are now able to monitor our infrastructure and get the information in real-time should anything happen."
"Splunk Observability Cloud has proven to be beneficial for our organization, helping improve operational performance and company resilience while reducing the costs of unplanned digital downtime."
"Splunk Observability Cloud is highly effective in improving digital resilience, as real-time visibility, proactive alerting, fast root cause analysis, distributed tracing, and AI-driven insights enable anomaly detection, which allows us to quickly understand failures, recover faster, maintain system availability, and handle failures in complex distributed environments by seeing how services interact and where breakdowns occur."
"The ability to create custom dashboards is one of the best features and that's typically why most people deploy Splunk. Users can create dashboards for just about anything."
"Splunk's dashboards are great."
"After implementing observability, I could see end-to-end transaction tracing and quickly identify where issues arose, which reduced troubleshooting time and improved overall application stability and availability for our customers and systems."

Cons

"Customer support needs to improve by bringing in more people who are knowledgeable about the tool, as there are very few left."
"We would like to see support for non-Windows environments."
"Recently we have been facing some stability issues."
"There have been some issues with customers implementing this solution and with login errors, which could be areas for improvement."
"Real User Monitor needs to cover more protocols to provide more in-depth information. It could also be better at monitoring voice-related traffic. There is currently no visibility in that channel."
"One area to improve is the user interface, of course. The second one is their R&D has virtually stopped building a product roadmap."
"This technology is considered to be older."
"The product needs more R&D to make it easier and more compatible with other software."
"One thing I recently ran into was that the logs on the server most often get Gzipped after they have been rotated. We found that we were not monitoring some of the things, so we had to go back and pull them in. Right now, it pulls one at a time, untars it, or unzips it, so I cannot look at the entire history. There can be an improvement in that area."
"I don't consider the solution scalable."
"It would be beneficial to have more enhanced features with capabilities to adapt more integrated applications. Improvements in dashboard configuration, customization, and artificial intelligence functionalities are desired."
"In Splunk Observability Cloud, I notice room for improvement in synthetic monitoring. It does not provide output based on server names."
"In the next release, I would like to see more integration with other solutions."
"I believe that areas of Splunk Observability Cloud that could be improved include the initial setup and instrumentation costs, which take more time for APM."
"Regarding the negative side, I think the licensing can be much better because it is based upon host units and there is additional licensing for the number of traces that I can bring in."
"The end-to-end visibility is lacking because Splunk cannot directly monitor network devices."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Not expensive."
"If I compare with other vendors, other vendors are more expensive"
"Compared to other tools, OpenText Real User Monitoring is an expensive solution."
"The price is approximately €30,000 ($35,500 USD) for the enterprise edition."
"I would rate the price of Splunk Infrastructure Monitoring as an eight out of ten, with ten being the most expensive."
"Licensing cost is the biggest argument I get from those divesting from Splunk. There are those within our organization who say we are going to go to other tools since Splunk is too expensive."
"The solution's pricing is competitive. I rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten. The price of the solution could be cheaper."
"Splunk has been fairly expensive, but it has been predictable."
"The price of Splunk APM is less than some of its competitors."
"It is expensive."
"It appears to be expensive compared to competitors."
"I am not in that circle, but we are currently licensing based on our queries. That is working out for us. Previously, it was by volume of data, and now, we can store as much data as we want."
