Facilitates seamless data aggregation with some outdated visual elements hindering user appeal
Real-time data integration is an area for improvement. Although I've worked on several solutions involving real-time integration, it's not very user-friendly and often lags, especially with over a million data rows. This makes Power BI difficult to manage as loading times can reach one or two minutes, which is problematic today. There are challenges with scalability, requiring multiple pages in dashboards to manage these issues. Visualization could be improved as it appears outdated. Users, especially newcomers, find it unappealing and not user-friendly.

Scripting is a great feature as is the ability to export almost anything
Scripting is a good feature if you have programming and scripting skills. It can be used without those skills but I think it's difficult to integrate them in PRISM. The best thing is that you can export almost anything whether it's graphics or data and you can change dates on the fly.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The visualization part and its inclusion in a cloud-based application are valuable features."
"The scalability overall has been quite good."
"Everything that's in M Query and DAX is the heart of Power BI because with these tools you can make up for a lot of other missing features."
"Microsoft BI is easy to use and to design. I found Microsoft BI a lot easier than Tableau."
"It is more user-friendly compared to SSRS."
"Microsoft BI's initial setup is very straightforward."
"The user experience is easy. Users get familiar with it quickly."
"I like the fact that Power BI lets me use Excel data. At least 90% of my state data is in Excel spreadsheets. Having the ability to just attach a spreadsheet as a data source is very, very important. It's also good for training and teaching. Sometimes you don't always have access to a live production database, so having a spreadsheet with sample data is always nice."
"You can export almost anything whether it's graphics or data."

Cons

"It would be better if they had some video tutorials. Most people from an Excel background may struggle with measures in Microsoft BI."
"Microsoft needs to do some more research and development to make it more stable."
"This solution needs integration with SAS and more deep analysis functionality."
"A lot of people work on Excel, so being able to export an Excel file as part of a subscription would be an improvement."
"I'm looking for something that can make it much easier to incorporate Power BI visuals or dashboards into, let's say, Power Apps – custom Power Apps or anything like that. The most important thing would be to seamlessly embed reports in applications. For example, to have buttons that can be navigated through multiple solutions – from Power Apps to Power BI to SharePoint – via links or something like that."
"Its setup and support should be improved. We would like to see more material for developers that provides clear explanations about how we can do data mining by using Microsoft BI. It would also be good if we can connect a feature to other customized machine learning solutions."
"Microsoft BI has its own challenges in terms of user interface and how quickly somebody can learn how to use it."
"It needs an AI which can choose the appropriate connection strings and provide options for connections."
"Graphics are limited and could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is reasonably priced."
"Price is the best feature of Power BI! You get a lot of value for the price. If you know how to use it, it's a great BI solution for your money."
"The cost of the solution is more flexible for us because the desktop is free and we pay as we use it in the cloud."
"Power BI is subscription-based, and you have three options. The Pro edition, which is the standard one, is about $9 per user. The Premium edition, which provides AI and cloud capabilities but at a limited size, is for small to medium enterprises. It is about $20 per user. For large enterprises, such as manufacturing facilities, there is an option for the capacity. The capacity subscription is about $4,000 per capacity level. They also have an option for the on-premises version, but it is not common to see someone going for the on-premises version. The on-premises version requires a specific license that is attached to SQL Server. I believe it is about $17,000, but I'm not sure about it."
"I am satisfied with its price. Its price is very less as compared to Tableau and QlikView."
"Paid for itself in the first month."
"The price for this solution is reasonable. However, there is an additional cost if you want to publish the dashboard privately."
"Power BI is cost-effective compared to other reporting tools."
