Database has secured high-volume transactions and supports fast, compliant workflow processing
Sterling B2B Integrator is a highly transactional-oriented application, which can be described as an OLTP application. Any data that flows through the application is stored in the database for each step that it performs. IBM Db2 Database helps the application work much faster from an OLTP perspective. IBM Db2 Database is SSL enabled, which means that from the security point of view, any access to the database is through SSL. Additionally, all compliance-related aspects have been taken care of from the database point of view, including database encryption and security-related features. It is highly scalable, and its performance related to database pruning is very good. It can be scaled vertically or horizontally so that data insertions and data access are much faster and more secure compared to how Oracle or other databases work.

We did not use the replication or inbuilt replication from Oracle Java DB. We have separate core functions to replicate the database and migrate the database. We are not using the inbuilt encryption of Oracle Java DB. We are using encryptions such as AES. We are currently using these to encrypt the sensitive data. We encrypt not only passwords but mostly all the data.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Ease of use and robust automated security administration and reporting are features any mainframe shop needs and should have."
"IBM Db2 Database is perfect and leading in this area."
"The solution helps secure the database."
"Its robustness, scalability, availability, and performance are valuable. All these are the major attributes of a relational database for supporting a very high-volume business, and Db2 is very good in all those areas and in all those attributes."
"It's very secure."
"Db2 database scalability and performance capabilities match our database needs. It covers pretty much everything a database administrator or engineer might need."
"The solution's querying feature is most valuable. It allows me to retrieve data quickly."
"The most valuable aspect of this solution is its stability. We have never had any problems and have never had to contact technical support."
"The most valuable feature is automation."
"Our ROI has been a 600% growth in stock price, one of the biggest increase rates for any of the global top 50 companies."
"The solution is stable."
"The stability is awesome because it is all supported by Oracle database and Oracle relational database management system, which watches very carefully all the processes that are running, making it very stable and very secure."
"This is a fairly stable language, and it's been in the market for several years."
"Using this product will lead to a reduction in operational costs."
"The solution's capability to handle large data sets, large volumes and indexing are the most valuable features."
"There have been no issues in relation to stability. We've never really had do to any recoveries. It is very stable."

Cons

"The backup solution lacks flexibility in some situations and could be improved."
"The queries can be difficult for beginners because there are so many. I would like to see more use cases for flow analysis that enable us to correlate the flow with events. Adding this feature in a QI format would be good for beginners."
"The ease of use, or ease of management, could be improved."
"Microsoft SQL Server is comparatively very simple to use. I wish IBM would move towards making Db2 easy to use for both basic and advanced users. This is where I see room for advancement. Db2 is also more expensive than Microsoft SQL Server, and its price can be reduced. The replication feature needs to be there in Db2. Microsoft provides similar functionality in SQL Server. IBM also has similar functionality, but it exists in a different product. So, to have the replication ability, you have to buy a different product. It makes sense to have this functionality within Db2 instead of a different product. It will also be helpful in terms of competition. In Africa, the problem for Db2 is competition. Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server have been in this market for a very long time. These companies have built the ecosystem and the brand within this market for a very long time. So, they are very popular with users. Db2 or IBM came a little later in the game, and that's where the problem lies. They also don't do a lot of marketing for it, which is also a problem."
"Learning and understanding DB2 is a difficult process because no more resources are available for knowledge base."
"The problem with this environment is that any software that you install is very costly because there are no free tools for this environment."
"Backing up databases from Windows and restoring them on AIX and vise-versa."
"In terms of improvements, IBM Db2 can improve its interface and its functionality. Also, the embedded functions should be much richer than the current ones - the functions which are embedded in the engine itself."
"The solution should continue to keep updating and improving the Java language."
"The solution could be more user-friendly."
"With respect to the product's consistency, there's a lot of scope that could be introduced in regulator basis."
"The tool might be integrated, but we see performance issues because of overhead."
"The biggest lesson that I have learned from using Oracle products is vendor lock-in."
"Oracle can improve by providing more connection string variations and relay servers on the path to the database."
"In terms of improvement, I'd like an automation tool that is lower priced. The core prices are very high."
"It'll be better if Oracle Java supports open source technologies, like Node.js."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"They are competitive and honest (compared to how peer firms approach licensing conversations). "
"I rate the product pricing a nine out of ten."
"The solution's pricing is fine."
"It's very expensive."
"The total cost of the solution depends upon the PVU licensing"
"I would rate the pricing a five out of ten. It's not super expensive, but also not cheap."
"Compared to other databases, Db2 is relatively cheaper."
"We purchase the product's yearly license."
"The product's pricing is very friendly, with no extra costs after the licensing fees."
"Oracle Java DB is a pricey solution."
