Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts.""It's quite easy to install.""This solution enables us to make better cost-effective use of our existing hardware and leverage the current infrastructure at a higher level than we could before.""Quick setup, great support, stability is great""The fact that I can now count on a true failover solution is what is most appealing.""It has been extremely stable for the three years we've been running it.""Speed and high availability have been the most valuable for us."

"The nice thing about it is that it truly integrates with the cloud, so I can move my volumes bi-directionally in and out of the cloud.""Very good in-line compression.""Nimble DHCI is really user friendly and not complex""We have the ability to increase the storage without any additional costs.""HPE's InfoSight software, which does the comparative analysis and artificial intelligence built-in in the box, and with Nimble they do well against the competition. Additionally, the dashboards are good.""The solution is useful for taking storage snapshots, has high performance, and the CASL architecture is good for optimizing workloads.""It is easier to manage compared to the other vendors.""So far, the solution's performance is very good."

"In terms of scalability, adding a number of nodes, I find that it will not be any issues.""The most valuable features are easy cloud administration and management.""The flexibility of this system is very good. It's also faster than others, and has skilled technical support who showed more initiative than a competitor, e.g. VMware.""It's easy to use and has a very smooth onboarding process.""Everything is core centralized on the UI.""The most valuable feature is Move, which allows you to migrate virtual machines from VM to AHV.""One of the most valuable features of Nutanix is that it's easy to use. I love this solution—it's easy to maintain and update, and I think it's almost perfect.""The features that I have found most valuable include its HA facility, viability, robustness, flexibility, it's time to go live is very short, and it has a friendly user interface."

Cons
"The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs.""It would help if the manufacturer provided clearer and more detailed documentation, with explanations of how the application can be installed in various HA configurations.""Currently, the StarWind management console is a bit clunky to navigate and isn't the most user-intuitive interface.""I would like to see different levels of support offered.""It took a bit of knowledge and support to put in place but once installed it works fine. Migration (HyperV) from one server to another sometimes takes longer than expected but there is no data loss even if the host crashes.""Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing. A native web interface could also be an option. I love to see in the future port of the software on a general Linux distribution like RedHat or Ubuntu in order to avoid windows license costs. I would also like to see features like erasure coding implemented. On the VSAN software, I would like to see some improvements in the storage pools (eliminate the usage of the file as a data container and use the raw partition).""There needs to be more visibility on how long the cloud replication will take as there is no current ETA.""When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically"

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"HPE Nimble Storage dHCI currently is promoting only VMware as a hypervisor, whereas if they can look into other OSs, such as KVM or Red Hat, it would be an improvement.""Their documentation needs to be simpler to read yet more detailed so it's easy to compare models and easier for clients to pick.""I'm not sure if there are features lacking.""The only issue I'm really running into is we have a SQL server that we're having a lot of high IO latency on one of my drives and it's my data drive from my SQL server. It's not really giving me any good information as to where that latency is coming from, so that's what I'm trying to track down and troubleshoot.""Lacking integration to the cloud.""The solution could improve by providing better file-level restoration and DVX system options.""Nimble Storage's integration with the management software could be better.""Sometimes the technical support would get back to us in two hours, but other times it would take them two or even three days to respond."

More HPE Nimble Storage dHCI Cons →

"We had a few problems with the foundation machine that you can use to build your systems out. We've got it working now, but it should be improved.""The initial setup can be a bit difficult.""In the future, I would like Acropolis to add support for publishing external storage.""There is a need is to be able to consume Nutanix storage from outside the cluster for other, non-Nutanix workloads.""The new features are not free. You need to pay for each feature.""Deployment could be more user-friendly - currently, it requires certain skills with the network and nodes.""The process of migrating from old hardware to new could improve.""With some projects that we are deploying, there are errors that arise when adding nodes."

    Overview

For SMB, ROBO, Cloud and Hosting providers, who look to cut down virtualization expenses, our solution is StarWind VSAN. It is software that eliminates any need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between hypervisor servers. There is less hardware to buy in general, consequently less money is spent on purchase and maintenance. The existing hardware is used with maximum efficiency, so there is no money wasted at all.

StarWind Virtual SAN targets those who already have servers, or are bound to a particular vendor list to buy from. In case there is a new virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a much better way – StarWind HyperConverged Appliance. It is a turnkey solution complete with hardware and software, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN. Those who need to build and maintain virtualization infrastructure at little to no expense, may be interested in StarWind Virtual SAN Free.

HPE Nimble Storage dHCI an intelligent platform with the flexibility of converged and the simplicity of HCI. It disaggregates compute and storage and integrates hyperconverged control to give enterprises simple infrastructure management on a flexible architecture.

Nutanix Acropolis AOS is a foundation operating system or "data plane.” It is the operating system for the Nutanix hyper-converged infrastructure platform. Compare this to Nutanix's "control plane" components, Prism and Calm. The Acropolis Operating System is abbreviated as AOS. It is a back-end solution for workload and resource management, as well as for provisioning and operations. Its purpose is to separate the supporting resource from the workloads that are operating, while offering a single platform to operate on. Workloads can now travel between hypervisors, cloud providers, and platforms without interruption. Nutanix Acropolis AOS is a turnkey solution that can be implemented in 60 minutes or less, out of the box. Nutanix Acropolis AOS eliminates standalone SAN or NAS-based storage and costly virtualization.

    Nutanix Acropolis AOS Features

Nutanix Acropolis AOS has many valuable key features. Some of the most useful ones include:

    • Preinstalled AHV virtualization: Nutanix Acropolis AOS includes AHV, our native virtualization solution, as well as VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization technologies. Nutanix AHV is a full enterprise virtualization solution that is deeply integrated into Acropolis and comes at no extra cost. AHV provides the functionality needed to run enterprise applications.
    • Enterprise storage: Nutanix Acropolis AOS offers a distributed storage fabric that offers enterprise-class storage services such as de-duplication, compression, encryption, and erasure coding to all types of applications. Its data locality assures the most efficient performance.
    • Platform services: Nutanix Acropolis AOS provides a comprehensive collection of software-defined platform services that enable IT organizations to centrally manage and consolidate all of their workloads on the Nutanix platform.
    • Networking services: Nutanix Acropolis AOS offers a comprehensive collection of services for securing applications with native microsegmentation, analyzing network and performance, and automating routine network tasks.
    • VXLAN:  This is a virtualization overlay network that allows for the creation of private, isolated networks in the data center. These networks are layer 2 switches to which all traffic is routed.

    Nutanix Acropolis AOS Benefits

There are many benefits to implementing Nutanix Acropolis AOS. Some of the biggest advantages the solution offers include:

    • Less hardware: With Acropolis AOS, enterprise IT can consolidate on fewer hardware components and lower costs. The solution can be deployed on virtual machines, with no need for expensive hardware. It can also be deployed by external parties.
    • Default policy-based networking: Acropolis AOS by default discovers and applies policies that govern traffic in the network. This greatly simplifies management, as it is easier to simply enable or disable policies rather than use individual firewall rules per server.
    • Network fencing is used to control traffic entering or leaving a specific VM-to-VM port group based on access rules. This provides a way of selectively enabling or disabling services across VMs within a port group to help ensure traffic is managed in an appropriate manner.

    Reviews from Real Users

Nutanix Acropolis AOS stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its stability and its all-inclusivity, which saves users money. PeerSpot users take note of the advantages of these features in their reviews:

Gerhard J., IT Manager at Q4 Fuel, says of the solution, “One major thing that comes up again and again is stability. Our downtime is literally based on hardware upgrades that need to be done. Acropolis is very, very user friendly. You don't have to physically have a super IT guy to manage the system.”

Another PeerSpot reviewer, a Solutions Architect at a computer software company, writes, “From a grander view, it's allowed our customers to actually reduce the amount of software that they have to purchase. Not only do they have to purchase the hypervisor, and if they're in VMware, in most cases, they're purchasing disaster recovery tools and a whole bunch of other things. However, Nutanix has it all built-in so that users have one area to manage and maintain.”
