A robust product that offers great flexibility
The initial setup process was neither easy nor difficult, as it is somewhere in the middle, but at times, it is difficult to make certain decisions. The availability of the product is high. The deployment model of the product is chosen depending on the requirements of the customers, but our company does sea consultancy to figure out what the advantages and disadvantages of both deployment models are. The discussions mostly led my company to opt for a hybrid cloud deployment model. It doesn't take more than two days to complete if the installation is only for a couple of systems, or else if there are multiple ways to decide, then the installation part depends on the rate type.

Good performance and stability with a straightforward setup
Typically, if a client needs support, they contact us and we are the ones to offer it to them. However, we have contacted Oracle technical support and we have a back-to-back contract with them. They support our HR on-site team. We also get support from Oracle functional services and backend support. They are usually quite good, but at times it depends on which engineer is working. When we get support from India, there's sometimes a delay. If it's from Europe or the US, often we get faster results. Time zones also affect technical support response times and will dictate who responds to our requests.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Most of the HP products I come across are they are easy to install. That's not very complex."
"Consolidation and duplications features."
"The most valuable features of HPE ConvergedSystem are scalability and resilience."
"This solution is very simple to use."
"We find the deduplication and compression features to be most valuable, as well as that of the backup solution inside."
"As far as what we are doing now, there is no problem with stability; it's pretty flexible, it's efficient, and it is centralized management, cost-effective."
"The solution's most valuable feature is its ability to restore lost machines. Essentially its high availability capabilities are extremely valuable to us."
"The flexibility is the most advantageous aspect of the solution; our system has a very big environment and, due to this, the replication and backup operation is not an easy task, yet we prefer HPE SimpliVity modules in our environment even when we have some different cases in operations."
"Scalablility: When we need to upgrade from an eighth-rack to a full-rack, the real downtime is less then an hour."
"The virtualization, especially vUser creation, is the most valuable feature for us."
"This is NOT a product someone wants to deploy in a business that requires reliability and accountability."
"Server consolidation. In a cloud architecture, moving the HA VM from one to other is faster. This is because of the InfiniBand network fabric between the compute nodes and storage nodes (ZFS Storage)."
"This product offers a strong infrastructure with compute, storage, and network in a private cloud environment, enabling the organization to concentrate on business application development and improvement."
"InfiniBand (internal Exalogic network) minimizes any network outages."
"Oracle Engineered Systems are the best solution for Oracle and non-Oracle applications: hardware and software are combined together to ensure high availability and maximum performance."
"If you are using only LINUX/Solaris and Oracle Fusion MW products, then this is a great platform."

Cons

"HPE ConvergedSystem needs to improve its management. I would like the tool to add cloud management features so that the system can be accessed anywhere from the cloud."
"Features that should be addressed concern the HPE functionality and the interaction with VMware."
"With ConvergedSystem, we'd like to see just how portable and scalable HP can make it. Is it really just an add-on each time and not a complete redesign?"
"I would like to see monitoring solutions included, as well as brand support."
"Pricing is an area of concern in the solution where improvements are required."
"Perhaps they can work on providing faster allocation of memory or storage."
"There is some scope for improvement in support. The response time could be better."
"Currently, we have problems with the HPE StoreOnce module in regards to the backup operations."
"After this, you need to be prepared to rely on your team or the vendor support team because you’re going to face small but frequent issues."
"We have encountered stability issues: a storage failure that led to Exalogic being fully down' sometimes the storage cluster OCFS2 used for the OVM repository had stopped working and could not be mounted; finally, after many months, Oracle support discovered problems with InfiniBand (IB) host channel adapters (HCAs) that connect ZFS storage to the hosts and many firmware upgrades."
"It's very expensive. Oracle Platinum Services (patching) is terrible, and we haven't had a patching exercise occur without significant problems and often impact to production operations."
"The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve. Over the past four years we've had to replace about six of them. They've failed almost every three to six months."
"Exadata's current speed is almost enough but sometimes much slower than the older mainframe systems, so some performance improvements would be helpful."
"The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve."
"Initially, yes, there were stability issues. A number of redesigns were needed to stabilize the Hypervisor, control the stack layer, as well as the software defined network drivers (Mellanox bugs causing compute nodes to reboot)."
"Technical support is an issue for Oracle, not only for Exalogic products; it needs to improve."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This is an expensive solution."
"I rate the product price an eight and a half on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"This is an expensive system and not every customer has the kind of budget to support it."
"The pricing is competitive. Not a major problem. We have a subscription model."
"There are some extra costs in addition to the licensing costs for the yearly maintenance from professional third-party services."
"Pricing is good. We have not calculated what hyper-converged infrastructure has brought us but I think there has to be some lower cost for us, compared to the public cloud. Obviously, there would be a lower cost, probably by more than half."
"My company has a five year contract for HPE ConvergedSystem. The contracts depend on companies and sometimes it can be three years. The solution is worth its price."
"The pricing is sensitive."
"Pricing and licensing are two very delicate aspects when talking about Oracle, especially engineered systems. The prices are quite high compared with other similar products, so the CapEx analysis and investment return have to be very well studied."
"To expand the hardware's capability requires a massive investment."
"Get the price of the license you will need for the middleware that will be running on top of the Exalogic. Otherwise, you can use another middleware solution, as long as it can run on top of Oracle Linux."
