Enforces standardized setup procedures following Certified Validated Design (CVD) guidelines and offers greater flexibility and control over the system compared to traditional systems
The GUI setup follows the right setup, meaning we have to follow the CVDi.e. Certified Validated Design. Everything is clear, because you can build CI yourself, but without rules, it can be messy. With FlexPod, there are rules to follow, making it more standardized. This helps with troubleshooting and compatibility assessments, simplifying troubleshooting significantly. We also use FlexPod pre-validated architectures to validate the design. It is very, very important to us because we had a bad case in 2015 where separate items integrated poorly due to no version or firmware compatibility certification. Troubleshooting became a nightmare. So, standards are crucial for us, and everything entering production should be verified or at least documented for certification.

Good performance and stability with a straightforward setup
Typically, if a client needs support, they contact us and we are the ones to offer it to them. However, we have contacted Oracle technical support and we have a back-to-back contract with them. They support our HR on-site team. We also get support from Oracle functional services and backend support. They are usually quite good, but at times it depends on which engineer is working. When we get support from India, there's sometimes a delay. If it's from Europe or the US, often we get faster results. Time zones also affect technical support response times and will dictate who responds to our requests.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"FlexPod impacted us by making things easier to deploy. The solution is a private, hybrid, and multi-cloud environment. That's very important to us. We're doing a lot of hybrid cloud."
"When you open the box, they give you a very nice diagram. Which was my initial guide through setting up any NetApp SAN. It worked itself out pretty well."
"Prior to FlexPod, we only had a physical environment; from a physical environment, we were able to work into the FlexPod where we leverage all the virtualizations, and it provides us with a lot of agility, on-demand or through orchestrations, as we deliver hundreds of servers."
"FlexPod has affected the workload of our network admin team awesomely. We have fewer employees. It's good."
"I would say that its very scalable, as it meets and exceeds our needs."
"Ease of cabling is the most valuable feature of the solution."
"The struggle was their speed of deployment (contacting different vendors that took time through the internal authorization procedure), and FlexPod sped up this process by 50-60%."
"The most valuable features are reliability and the ability to give our end-users a reliable system with the performance, the IOPS, and the latency that they want."
"Even with running in a virtualized configuration, the performance seen has been better than running on non-Exalogic physical environments."
"The automation and provisioning of the environment, as well as the centralized monitoring, have all improved over the years."
"The main benefit of using the solution is for the performance it provides."
"This product has improved our organization by giving us better performance on WebLogic-based applications."
"Server consolidation. In a cloud architecture, moving the HA VM from one to other is faster. This is because of the InfiniBand network fabric between the compute nodes and storage nodes (ZFS Storage)."
"On comparison with other solutions, VM for example, we saw a 70% performance improvement."
"It has improved the way my organization functions by migrating apps to one consolidated platform that is dedicated to WebLogic and Oracle apps."
"It's improved the delivery of virtual machines and setting them up with WebLogic (Application Server)."

Cons

"Our environment does not always require this solution, so we are not reaping the optimal ROI."
"I had one problem at the site where I had an aggregate that would not shrink after I had deleted some stuff. It took a few tries to get the right guy on the call. We do have a NetApp SAM with our company, and it really took getting to him to get the solution fixed."
"A progress bar would...be pretty cool."
"There are too many drivers and software combined all together, and we need to have compatibility between all of them."
"I'd like them to bring back the GUI for NetApp ONTAP. They changed the interface in version 9.8, and it's not great. In 9.9 they've tried to bring it back a little bit, but it's still not great."
"I would like to see synchronous replication and easier automation in the next release."
"The solution has not reduced our data center costs."
"I would like to see better operations, a single pane of glass to manage and monitor the entire design across VMware, Cisco, etc. I would also like the upgrade process to be a little smoother."
"Middleware application services, such as statistics, data mining, could be better."
"The solution needs to add a network virtualization feature similar to that of VxRail."
"The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve."
"Middleware application services, such as statistics, data mining, could be better."
"The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve. Over the past four years we've had to replace about six of them. They've failed almost every three to six months."
"Every deployment or configuration change in Exalogic is a surprise. It is not reliable."
"We have encountered stability issues: a storage failure that led to Exalogic being fully down' sometimes the storage cluster OCFS2 used for the OVM repository had stopped working and could not be mounted; finally, after many months, Oracle support discovered problems with InfiniBand (IB) host channel adapters (HCAs) that connect ZFS storage to the hosts and many firmware upgrades."
"OTD (Oracle Traffic Director) is failover architecture and is not as robust as advertised. Additionally, SSO and several other features sometimes went down."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"As a startup, for the amount of budget we have and the amount we spend, we are getting what we expected."
"We immediately saw a return on investment due to the fact that replacing our legacy storage arrays with the new AFFs reduced the footprint and maintenance costs. Overall, we saw an almost immediate ROI."
"We have seen an 80 percent improvement in application performance."
"It is cost-effective."
"It is cheaper than other products. For example, Dell EMC VxBlock is more expensive."
"Overall, the solution works pretty well. The biggest complaint I have from customers is the cost."
"Make sure you are buying for performance, not just capacity."
"We have reduced our manpower with the solution."
"Get the price of the license you will need for the middleware that will be running on top of the Exalogic. Otherwise, you can use another middleware solution, as long as it can run on top of Oracle Linux."
"Pricing and licensing are two very delicate aspects when talking about Oracle, especially engineered systems. The prices are quite high compared with other similar products, so the CapEx analysis and investment return have to be very well studied."
"To expand the hardware's capability requires a massive investment."
