Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Backup storage has shrunk dramatically with deduplication but still needs stronger security options
The air gap feature is something I'd really like to see in QoreStor. There's no native air gap capability right now, and for security-conscious environments, that's a gap. The configuration export is also limited in QoreStor. If you want to document your setup or migrate configuration to a new instance, it requires more manual work than it should.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We frequently use the granular restore option for when our users accidentally delete files or to recover emails from mailboxes. We have found that to be a must-have feature and it comes with the solution at no extra cost."
"The initial setup was very straightforward, as the software installs easily, is very easy to configure and has a nice GUI."
"Valuable features for us include quick recovery, compression, and deduplication, and the mix of these features leads to a reduced backup footprint while having guaranteed fast recovery in case of DR."
"The most valuable feature of Altaro VM Backup is its ability to backup and restore various types of data, including Active Directory, application servers, and SQL Server databases."
"The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency."
"Altaro Hyper-V backup is a product that, once installed, does not need much maintenance."
"This product is not expensive, does the job what I bought it for, and is not time consuming."
"Since moving to Altaro, we feel that backing up and restoring files has become much more efficient in our organization."
"The dedupe and compression are pretty extreme. On disk, we're getting dedupe rates of up to 65 percent of data and compression of 34 percent. When you go to the cloud, it's more like 76 percent for dedupe and almost 50 percent for compression."
"I would rate QoreStor a ten out of ten for what it offers for the price."
"Data deduplication and replication would be the top two features. The encryption and cloud tiering are also attractive for the future."
"This software solution can be installed on many different types of hardware, which makes it very flexible. We can run it on virtual machines or virtual servers, providing convenience for solutions of varying sizes, from small to large."
"Quest QoreStor is very stable compared to our previous solution."
"QoreStor has helped to reduce our backup storage requirements on-premise by at least 90%."
"We need revisions and safe backup so that it could be held up in court, but deduplication and compression are the main features why we have Quest QoreStor. That's where it really shines. I use ZFS and XFS at home, and Quest QoreStor is even better."
"Overall, it simplifies the management of backup and gives me a more secure feeling that my data is going to be available if I need to retrieve it."

Cons

"The cloud backup and VMware support (now available in the latest releases), could do with some improvement."
"Being able to backup the actual host machine would be an improvement for us."
"To improve Altaro, I would like to see the ability to choose more than one backup location at a time."
"Storage usage: you have often to manually free disk spaces."
"Unable to restore a VM when I needed it. Tried multiple hosts. Connected via gig switch and would never complete."
"We use Linux guests on Hyper-V clusters and we really need the file level restore on these VMs (ext3 and 4 file systems) functionality."
"The recovery speed could be quicker, especially when you only need a file or two."
"I had some difficulties activating the product but after the activation phase all went smooth."
"The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing. I worked a lot with Quest engineers, especially in the early days when we were first testing it and trying it out. I actually had some of the developers working with us at one point because they were going through these point releases, and I was having trouble getting it to work in this S3-compatible situation. We got it all working eventually, but setup is definitely not the easiest thing in the world."
"There can be some kind of monitoring solutions to alert users to issues with the appliance or software, making it easy for customers to monitor their systems in the field."
"The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing in the world."
"Overall, I am happy with this solution, but a way to export configuration settings would be beneficial."
"In terms of improvement, we would like to have an Air Gap feature to prevent a virus from attaching to something. So that when we don't do a backup, we want the QoreStor to stay offline. It would be a nice feature to have."
"The air gap feature is something I'd really like to see in QoreStor."
"They need to increase their maximum capacity. Other than that, they're doing a pretty good job."
"The management interface is in need of improvement. The graphical user interface (GUI) for the web management tools appears clunky, and not super intuitive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"There is a free version for Hosts with 2 VMs."
"The price is great for the utility you get and the licensing has never caused any issues with my company."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"The pricing is okay,"
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"The cost is per terabyte, and overall, the cost was reasonable when compared to some competitors."
"The pricing is good. It is competitive for a managed services provider. I like the ability to pay by the terabyte, allowing for an incremental cost that we and our customers can afford, so the solution grows with the customer."
"Quest QoreStor's pricing is affordable. We evaluated Veeam, a well-known company for backup solutions, but found their pricing to be quite high. Veeam's price was almost double. For us, Quest QoreStor is very affordable."
"Its pricing model is very attractive. You have one price, and you get everything from QoreStor."
