Process-Level CPU Visibility: Introduce detailed CPU-usage metrics per subsystem (e.g., IPS engine, logging) so administrators can quickly identify and address performance spikes.
Analytics with FortiAnalyzer. Being able to pull in logs not just from our FortiGates but from all our other firewalls and then get them in one view has been a game changer. Whether I’m building an executive dashboard or doing a deep dive forensics session, I get everything I need without navigating consoles.Straightforward Application Control. FortiGate spots and blocks unwanted apps (eq. like BitTorrent or streaming services) with accuracy. Segmentation with VDOMs. We’ve carved our data center into four logical ‘mini-firewalls’ enterprise, core, billing, and WAF—all on one box. Each has its own rules and logs, and any traffic between them still gets inspected. It’s like having multiple appliances without the extra hardware. Always-Up-to-Date Threat Feeds. Daily signature updates and AI-driven threat sensing mean we’re blocking the latest vulnerabilities almost as soon as they’re announced.

Comprehensive cloud security with robust threat protection and VPN capabilities
Hillstone CloudEdge is compatible with all the mainstream public cloud providers, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Alibaba Cloud. This solution has a unified OS system for security products, ensuring that the virtual firewall has similar features to the on-premise solutions. Important features include a VPN, VTech VPN, SSL VPN, QoS, antivirus, threat protection, and sandbox capabilities.

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's very easy to set up, it's very easy to make policies and, for an organization, that means you don't need IT expert in firewalls. You just need to have somebody who knows a little bit of IT, and that's it. With other products, you need someone with a "Masters" degree in firewalls."
"Fortinet FortiGate is a stable solution."
"FortiGate is easier to deploy than Juniper."
"Fortinet FortiGate is a simple solution, and the integration with other solutions in the Fortinet portfolio, such as the Security Fabric integration, is competitive."
"Fortinet FortiGate is easy to use. Anyone can easily maintain it."
"I think Fortinet is a cheaper, stable, scalable, and reliable device."
"Fortinet FortiGate has reasonable pricing and is easy to operate; it is efficient and represents the future for security, including cloud security and branch-to-cloud security."
"There are many features packed and significant flexibility from Fortinet FortiGate in being able to do numerous things."
"I'd rate the solution nine out of ten."
"The solution is very easy to download and configure. The initial setup was very easy. The technical support is very good."
"Hillstone CloudEdge is compatible with all the mainstream public cloud providers, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Alibaba Cloud."
"I would recommend this product to any business that wants to protect its cloud environment, cloud server, or on-premises virtual servers."
"After switching from Cisco, Juniper, Astaro and Microsoft network response improved and more control of packet (for me, pfpacket technology is better than packet filter.)"
"Netgate pfSense's best features are that it's open source and flexible."
"I definitely advise others to use this firewall device, as it is truly useful, time-saving, and money-saving."
"The product makes our business more secure."
"It's open-source, it's flexible, and has a strong community."
"I have found the most valuable features to be antivirus and malware protection."
"I like the VPN features. We use WireGuard, which is part of the pfSense package. That was easy to set up, so I could connect to other customer sites seamlessly."
"Initial setup was very straightforward; the interface is very self-explanatory."

Cons

"There should be better customization in the IPS."
"Their support's response time can be better. In the past six months, they took quite a long time to respond to the support tickets."
"They could improve vulnerability scanning."
"It should have been scalable, but it is not quite so; there are limitations, and I find it very difficult to give connectivity simultaneously on concurrent connections, so I have to deprive my faculties, my staff, or my students of certain functions."
"Fortinet Fortigate could benefit by simplifying some of their processes."
"Maybe they could make some features more accessible, such as a way to translate directions between two networks that share the same subnets."
"The customer support is expensive. We have had difficulties with technical support from Fortinet."
"Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more storage in the hardware for log data."
"There is room for improvement in AI features, particularly for zero-day attacks and providing maintenance guidance."
"The solution needs more granular level reporting on system usage."
"It's definitely complex compared to other firewalls because you have to configure everything, read a lot of documents, and follow a lot of formulas and templates."
"The usage reports can be better."
"The downsides of Netgate pfSense include a lack of graphics to show a customer."
"pfSense would be much more efficient if it allowed exporting the entire configuration of a device after it's been set up."
"I would prefer being able to click a button that says," I am upgrading, so uninstall everything and store in the configuration file what I had installed.""
"One or two of the plugins didn't do what I wanted them to do. Maybe that was a misunderstanding or it's not quite ready yet. Sometimes, it's hard to wrap my head around the way the firewall rules work."
"They could improve their commercial stance and be more agile when it comes to the commercial pricing of enterprise deals."
"pfSense's dashboard offers basic monitoring, but it lacks centralized management for multiple PSM devices and a unified event interface for various services."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its price is good."
"The cost of Fortinet FortiGate is competitive and not expensive compared to other enterprise- grade solutions. On average, the license cost per year is around seventy percent of the firewall's purchase price."
"The solution's price is average."
"If you compare the price of Fortinet FortiGate IPS to other firewalls, Check Point is priced very high followed by Palo Alto and Sophos. Fortinet FortiGate IPS price is more reasonable."
"Fortinet is the least expensive solution."
"Its pricing is fine. It is on a yearly basis. Other than the licensing fee, there is no extra fee."
"Fortinet is reasonable in pricing and licensing. Overall, FortiGate is affordable. The licensing fee can be a little high, depending on the budget for your project."
"It has been two years. I don't remember the actual price, but it was affordable. We buy the boxes and then use the license for three years."
Information not available
"It is economical (i.e., free)."
"Its price is fair. I buy the Netgate hardware so that I can support pfSense and Netgate and I have somebody designing the next layer of software for me in the future. I like their model. It is a high-value piece of equipment with a great team behind it."
"Because the Community edition is free, we only charge for our services to the customers. In Turkey, we cannot demand normal pricing; if we were in Europe or the United States, we might collect more money from customers."
"pfSense is open-source."
"PfSense is reasonable for a business but a little pricey for home use. With the time savings and reliability, it pays for itself. I've been more than happy with the unit we've gotten here for the capacity we need. However, it'd be nice to have nice to have some nice home units that aren't a thousand dollars."
"pfSense pricing is reasonable."
"There is an open-source community version that is available."
"I think Netgate pfSense's TAC or support is a little expensive, considering how inexpensive everything else is."
