Efficient, user-friendly, and affordable
In the past, NSS Labs was utilized to test files and verify the numbers and datasheets. It would be beneficial to have an organization or testing lab that can verify the numbers in our datasheets since changes are frequently made, which can be inconvenient for review. For instance, when comparing different competitors such as Forcepoint, Palo Alto, and Check Point, the throughput or numbers in the datasheet may be lower than the actual numbers. Conversely, Fortinet typically reports very high numbers, but they cannot be replicated in the real world. Therefore, it would be advantageous for them to partner with a neutral testing organization such as NSS Labs to validate these numbers, thus providing more credibility and comfort to everyone regarding the accuracy of the datasheets. For the migration, everyone has a firewall in use and I am selling Fortinet. Typically, I am replacing another firewall. Previously, there was a tool available to convert configurations from one firewall, such as Palo Alto, to Fortinet, but this tool is no longer free. If it could be made free again, it would be very beneficial. This tool shows a lot of promise and is very good. Making it free would help many companies deliver their products in a more efficient and integrated way. It would also be more valuable to include the tool with the firewall package or license instead of having to pay extra for it. Paying extra puts more pressure on small companies to deliver the firewall and complete the configuration, especially if they have hundreds or thousands of policies. It's very painful to move through these policies line by line. The stability has room for improvement. When it comes to Secure SD-WAN, everything is fine. They are going the right way. SD-WAN is very promising. They can provide the SD-WAN solution separately, but they will not take this approach because even the smallest firewall can support the features, so there is no need to have a separate service or appliance. They are following the right steps, and there is nothing to be improved. Feature-wise, I'm really satisfied with the new release, and the features they have added. For now, it's fine.

The AI-driven solution has enhanced connectivity with seamless remote management
I primarily use Juniper Wi-Fi because I need a smooth Wi-Fi solution. I address my needs by opting for Juniper, which is a reliable product. I often require a dependable product, and this is why I choose Juniper. It is worth noting that the price of Juniper is quite high. However, for a single…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The ease of setting the solution up is a valuable aspect for us."
"FortiGate's web and URL filtering are unlike any other firewall I've used. The functionality of URL filtering in those solutions is problematic because everything is encrypted, and firewalls can't break that encryption protocol. Fortinet has an SSL proxy, so the encryption is done before the packet ever leaves the FortiGate. The URL filter is definitely one of the most helpful features."
"The GUI is good."
"I appreciate FortiGate's flexibility, which allows for centralized management through FortiManager."
"Fortinet has a very good solution for Secure SD-WAN. One very good feature is that they have robust and simple FortiOS through which they provide all solutions. That's their strength. There's not much complexity involved with the Secure SD-WAN solution of Fortinet as compared to Cisco's solution, which has a lot of flexibility but complexity also comes with that flexibility."
"Initial setup is straightforward. There weren't too many issues with setting it up. It takes one hour or so."
"It's very good and very stable for businesses. It works very well."
"The pipe filter application is an outstanding feature."
"The visibility of the information that's available about APs through their cloud portal and some of the AI features are most valuable."
"Juniper is a remote and AI-enhanced product."
"Juniper Mist Edge is valuable for its ability to troubleshoot and configure more things compared to Meraki."
"The most valuable aspect of Mist Edge lies in its ability to provide comprehensive visibility into all network packets."
"Juniper's technical support is highly responsive."
"Juniper Mist Edge provides better support for medium-sized businesses."

Cons

"The debugging and troubleshooting has room for improvement."
"Fortinet Fortigate could benefit by simplifying some of their processes."
"I would like to see improvements in the support from Fortinet. Here in the Philippines, whenever we have problems with a Fortinet product, we mostly ask for support from distributors and resellers and not directly from Fortinet."
"I would like to see improvements made to the dashboard and UI, as well as to the reporting."
"There are problems with the custom reporting of the unique traffic. The data is there, but it is too difficult for us to extract."
"The platform's interface could improve."
"My only complaint about FortiGate is a lack of QinQ VLAN tunneling. I haven't found this feature in any Fortinet product. You can do this on all Cisco routers, including the smaller models. However, QinQ isn't available on the biggest, most expensive Fortinet units. They still don't have that. I think now we're on software version 6.0, and they still haven't found a solution for QinQ. It isn't a dealbreaker, but that's my main complaint."
"One area for improvement is the performance on the bandwidth demands for smaller devices, as well as better web filtering."
"Juniper Mist Edge can sometimes have a delay in information updating."
"The one area that we're specifically looking into is their outdoor APs. The development of their outdoor APs is lagging as compared to their internal APs."
"Juniper Mist Edge can sometimes have a delay in information updating, which could be improved."
"I would like to see improvements in ensuring government compliance for Mist Edge."
"The product needs an update, particularly in price, as it deters many customers, including myself, from using it despite its convenience and effectiveness."
"I experience a lot of stability issues, so the rating is eight out of ten."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Setup cost may be not so low, as you expect, because it depends on different factors, but TCO for 5 years may pleasantly surprise you."
"The price of FortiGate is comparable to that of most other firewall solutions and is more affordable than Cisco."
"Fortinet Secure SD-WAN delivered the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) per Mbps among all other vendors."
"The price is highly competitive when compared to other brands that offer similar functionality."
"We have the full license that included all of the features and support."
"The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
"Its price is affordable and lesser than Cisco. Cisco is expensive. In terms of licensing, there is only one issue. If a customer's license has expired a month ago and they do the renewal after one month, Fortinet renews the license from the start of the previous month. The activation of the product is done from the previous month, not from the date of renewal. The customers usually shout and complain that because they are paying today, the renewal should start from today. The support contract renewals or licensing should be renewed from the date of renewal, but Fortinet starts from the day it had expired. It is a loss for customers. They might have had some problems because of which they did not take the license one month before. Fortinet should work on this. Cisco doesn't do this. Cisco always starts from the day they apply for the license."
"Fortinet FortiGate is cheaper than Palo Alto. It is about 20% cheaper."
"I believe we're getting some good discounts. We're paying less than $500 per AP. I don't know the annual maintenance cost."

Sophos UTM vs. Fortinet FortiGate
I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main…
