Unified security management has simplified data center protection and optimized branch connectivity
In my opinion, a potential area of improvement for Fortinet FortiGate is that while it has a pretty good dashboard, which is not an issue as such, when we talk about hardware parameters, sometimes the hardware gets pretty heated up. Given the amount of traffic going through it, that is fine. However, the heat of the hardware has to be looked into. Fortinet FortiGate firewall is good, but other products like the switching part and all that fabric, in handling very audio-video traffic, sometimes it struggles on the switching part, but on the routing part, it is fine. On the firewall part, it is good; there is no issue as such up till now. Additionally, I suggest that Fortinet can add software which is in a controlled way, particularly regarding AI and ML. It should not happen that the AI/ML takes certain decisions which are not beneficial for the organization. The control should remain with the team members who are responsible for configuring this firewall.

It has excellent scalability and allows you to execute custom COCR rules, letting you fine-tune agent monitoring
I'm using Tripwire Enterprise version 9.0. In my company, thirty to forty people use Tripwire Enterprise, mainly different types of engineers, governance, risk, compliance, and cybersecurity personnel. I advise people planning to use Tripwire Enterprise to take the training because the solution has a fairly complex interface. You can do a lot of work with it, but it isn't very easy. Tripwire Enterprise is a sophisticated tool. I rate the tool an eight on a scale of one to ten because it does an excellent job of handling the unique challenges of maintaining NERC CIP compliance and monitoring industrial controls.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Fortinet FortiGate is a scalable solution."
"The product has an inbuilt IPS software. We can configure it to block specific anonymous attacks that are happening."
"The services on offer are just superb."
"We are using this solution to protect our network on every site."
"The user interface is intuitive; anyone can configure the firewall with little knowledge of the product, and the back-end is robust with good security."
"Better visibility into traffic patterns Lightening fast troubleshooting and reduced management complexity overall."
"FortiGate is the most effective solution for us and it's a cheaper option to Check Point or Palo Alto which we looked at."
"The initial setup is very easy."
"Even if you change a single word in Notepad, it will let you know whether it was added, removed, or modified."
"File monitoring is the most valuable feature of the solution."
"I would recommend to anybody to try out Tripwire Enterprise."
"The most valuable feature is the integrity, because if the file configuration has been modified this solution calculates a hash code of the file and, if someone has changed the file, the solution will recalculate the hash and the admin receives a notice that the file has been modified, by sending an email or an alert to the administrator that someone has modified, added, or deleted a line, not just in files but also in tables metadata and network device configurations."
"The product supports different platforms."
"What's most valuable in Tripwire Enterprise is the ability to execute custom COCR rules that lets me fine-tune how I monitor Linux and Windows agents."
"The most valuable feature is integrity management. I had some discussions with service providers, and they also agreed."
"Its reporting features are great. It gives you an in-depth report. Its customization is also great, and it is working fine."

Cons

"Application management can be improved."
"I have found the support from Fortinet FortiGate very poor. I do not use them anymore because they are not very good."
"The support structure needs to be improved because every time we contact them, there is a delay in the response."
"Fortinet renewal prices for all models are too high, so they should offer discounts for customers on renewal."
"There are some license issues. Not every feature must have a separate license. There must be some of kind synergy between the license so we don't have to pay for every individual license that we would like to have."
"The FortiGate series does not have that much troubleshooting and network testing features in its GUI, hence we’ll definitely be looking for some add-on features in near future."
"There is room for improvement in being proactive about identifying and integrating new signatures."
"Customer support needs improvement. I have had to take the direct internal sources, such as sales contacts, and after that I rarely see support response."
"It needs more local support from the OEM side. It would be great if this can be improved."
"A lot of network devices need a custom integration."
"The main way that it can be improved is through better reporting."
"An area for improvement in Tripwire Enterprise is stability, as my company had stability issues with the last few versions of the solution. Tripwire Enterprise has been a bit buggy."
"The deployment with certain systems can be difficult and it needs to be simplified."
"There are several errors when deploying this solution to AIX systems, but with the help of support, it can be done."
"The stability of Tripwire Enterprise has room for improvement, but it's about 75% what it should be already."
"The initial setup is complex."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fortinet is the least expensive solution."
"The price of FortiGate support is too expensive."
"I think price-wise, the solution is totally reasonable since it has many products to serve, starting from small homes to massive scale sites."
"The product is not very expensive."
"Although the solution's pricing is high, compared with other products, it may be cheap."
"It was pretty affordable. We did go a little bit above MSRP, but the service pack that was included was quite worth the additional costs. It is competitively priced compared to other major players in the market. It is significantly cheaper than Check Point, which is a primary competitor. Additionally, its pricing is comparable to that of Cisco's ASA and a few other vendors."
"There is a need to pay for a license for the product."
"The licensing costs are very low."
"Cloud monitoring could be better. It could also be cheaper. It would be better if the company followed a pay-as-you-use model."
"Tripwire is more expensive than Netwrix."
"The licensing depends on the equipment, how many devices and the types of devices."

Sophos UTM vs. Fortinet FortiGate
I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main…
