Containerization has streamlined microservices delivery and ensures consistent hybrid deployments
The capabilities of Docker on CentOS that I have found the most valuable include its use for Spring-based applications, which significantly enhance the value I derive from it. Docker on CentOS is particularly effective for building distributed applications and microservices. Deployments are smooth and easy, and the integration with Kubernetes is seamless. I have successfully managed 80-plus pods clusters, scaling from 80 to 85 with 140 TPS without encountering any issues. Docker on CentOS's lightweight nature allows for flawless development across environments such as dev, stage, and prod. From my perspective, the experience with the deployment of Docker on CentOS is quite positive, especially for the CI/CD pipeline. The architecture overview includes the use of a Git repository and GitLab CI, which facilitates the Docker build for our Spring 3.x Java applications.

Provides BTRFS file system, which allows you to take snapshots
I only use the tool for testing purposes on my team, but multiple people use it. We don't make a team effort to install the solution. When it comes to maintenance, we ask our company to buy SUSE Linux Enterprise. My team consists of 13 people. We are currently integrating the solution with Ansible to do some coding. Although not a full-fledged automation, we are integrating the solution with Ansible and executing a couple of playbooks connected to openSUSE Leap. I would recommend the solution to other users looking for an open-source solution. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This approach is saving us cost and also saving us a significant amount of time."
"Docker on CentOS has positively impacted our organization with deployment, easy orchestration, and the learning curve is also good for our teams."
"The best features Docker on CentOS offers in my experience are its speed and smooth operation, along with the fact that there is no need to add a repository, and it is free."
"Docker on CentOS impacts my organization positively because Docker itself is a good tool to use."
"With Docker deploying faster, we save approximately 30% of the time on production issues or in the pipelines, which are specific outcomes I have observed."
"The best features Docker on CentOS offers include ease of management and Docker capabilities, and Docker images, Docker containers, and everything related to them help me significantly, while Docker's management on CentOS stands out for its efficiency."
"Those features helped me specifically during my project by making it more stable since it used fewer resources, resulting in a cost-efficient deployment, as the machines that I deployed it on used less of the resources than I thought they needed."
"With Docker and the automated pipeline using Jenkins and GitHub Actions, deployment time drops from two to three hours to minutes because the image is already built and validated and deployment is simply a matter of downloading the image and starting the container."
"The most valuable feature by far has been the virtualization capabilities of the operating system."
"The solution is very stable after it is configured. It is hard to have a panel slow, a problem, misconfiguration, or any kind of loss function."
"This solution has helped my organization's security from the use of its firewall, and the features for blocking or allowing traffic are very effective and have worked well for us."
"Stable - it just runs without the necessity to reboot."
"The solution is easy for me to use because the backend is derived from FreeBSD and this is something I have been using for over 20 years."
"Leap has provided me with the ability to offer what I consider Enterprise class server O/S platforms to my smaller customers who are looking to improve their competitive stances without breaking the bank."
"The solution's most valuable feature is the BTRFS file system, which allows you to take snapshots."
"openSUSE Leap has helped me with using containers in Podman."

Cons

"I think more stability could be improved, and there could be much more community support."
"Docker on CentOS can be improved by addressing security concerns, such as sharing the kernel, which leads to weaker isolation than VMs."
"I have only seen a return on investment in terms of time saved because I save my time, but in economic terms, no, because it was free."
"Regarding Docker on CentOS's AI capabilities, I think its accuracy and reliability of output are less because CentOS, if you want to use the latest version such as number seven, is not compatible with some drivers or libraries for AI."
"Docker on CentOS can be very secure and well-governed, but that security only exists if it is configured intentionally; out of the box, it is not secure by default for AI workloads."
"Because of CentOS lifecycle issues and support issues, additional security tuning that is required, and storage and networking complexity, I am providing this feedback."
"Crashes are the main issue I see. I realize that when it comes to disk space utilization, it really goes up so fast, and the main issue comes from running out of space; that is when crashes happen, and that is the only thing I have seen as an area for improvement in Docker."
"Docker on CentOS could be improved by delivering the latest versions faster because CentOS does not always deliver the latest versions of Docker."
"In the future, the Active Directory could improve."
"It would be helpful if we could easily switch from openSUSE Leap for testing to SUSE Linux Enterprise for production."
"There is room for improvement in the console."
"I would like openSUSE Leap to have better link integration with Windows."
"Like most Linux-based operating systems, the biggest challenge Leap faces is the GUI."
"Somehow the change from OS12.x via 13.x to Leap was a bit bumpy and some old issues seemed to reappear."
