Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Instead of four or five tools, consisting of backup software, storage where the backup resides, and a separate system for reporting and central monitoring, they all now come in the virtual edition for IDP.""It backs up our Windows systems and our Linux systems and everything.""We don't need to manage different devices.""The product is easy to troubleshoot and store data.""IDPA's best feature is Turbo Boost Technology. The compression and duplication features are excellent, too.""The solution is strong.""What I find valuable about Dell PowerProtect IDPA is its stability and strong performance.""The product is integrated with Huawei software and its backup and recovery time is very fast."

"The solution offers a 100% guarantee that if it's backed up you will be able to restore it onto any platform you want.""The general backup for replication and virtual standby are the most valuable aspects. It does what it says it does. It's a decent tool for not a big budget.""Definitely, the mount and recovery points are the most valuable, because if someone deletes a file or something, or if something gets corrupted, we can always revert back to an old change because our repository goes about a month back. The ability to roll back files and the ability to roll back servers is really important.""The most valuable feature of Quest Rapid Recovery for our organization is the VM recovery functionality.""It is very easy to use and very easy to manage. The fact that I can easily recover data is valuable. I don't use it much. The only way I have been using it is that sometimes, people ask to recover the data, which is a very easy process. It takes only a few minutes to get in and get the data from the server.""Not having to switch tapes is wonderful. It makes it so easy. We have an on-prem deployment that we also replicate to an offsite replication host. So by not having to deal with tapes and moving them off-site every day and every week, that's amazing ease of use for us.""Just knowing that the data is easily recoverable is our ROI. It definitely lowers risk.""Built-in encryption helps to secure our data as it travels from our on-site server to our off-site backup server."

Cons
"The only thing that could be improved would be the complexity of the initial setup.""The price could be lowered slightly, to make it more competitive.""There is room for improvement in terms of network connectivity.""Dell PowerProtect DP needs to include more features and improve backup for a continual base.""The solution should be easier to use.""We cannot add IDPA to DPC, and each IP has a DP Central, which cannot monitor other IDPAs.""I would like to see integration with Dell EMC's Cloud Tier.""Managing the product is a little bit complicated."

More Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) Cons →

"You can only take a snapshot from a virtual environment. It should have the ability to take snapshots from both a virtual and physical environment.""When you do a full backup, all of the memory resources on the server are used, which is something that should be improved.""Rapid Recovery can only backup the machine or disc, but it can't back up from folders, and files, and things like that.""I don't really think that there is a whole lot that needs to be changed. It would be nice if you could deploy the agent without having to reboot. When I upgraded my core to the latest version, I also wanted to update all of my servers, but I had to put that off because I can't just shoot it out there. I have to make sure it is at a time when I can do a reboot right away.""The terminology didn't seem easily available. When I go to the website, it is hard to search for things. You get all the articles, then you finally get the search button. They need the search at the top of the knowledge base. Then, on occasion, if you get an error message in the system, which is very important, it says, "Click here for more information," but I never get more information. The search engine doesn't find it or it is some weird error. It has never worked for me.""It's not really Quest's fault, but the only issue that I had during the time when I was doing a lot of our restores is whenever the server reboots, it has to bring all of the repositories back in again, which takes around five to six hours to pull eight terabytes back in again.""One area where Quest Rapid Recovery has room for improvement is in the handling of snapshots on Hyper-V.""Sometimes, when we have certain batches for Windows, it needs to be restarted. When it's restarted, the service is configured as a delayed start. Sometimes, you need to wait too long until it rights itself, or you have to do it manually."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The licensing is billed on a monthly basis. Dell is bundled so that when you order IDPA, you get everything together with the license."
  • "I would rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
  • "It is a cost-effective solution."
  • "We have a perpetual license. It is a capacity-based license."
  • More Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It's very expensive which is why I want to drop it. They charge us per core and we have a six-core server. It's expensive to pay for maintenance charges. I want to switch to something cheaper."
  • "It is a little expensive. However, I haven't compared it to other solutions. Being a nonprofit, it is always good to have nonprofit discounts on products."
  • "I don't think the licensing for the product is very expensive."
  • "Licensing fees are based on the amount of data that you want to store, which is related to how many customers you want to cover."
  • "I believe the basic license comes with six terabytes, whereas a lot of the other ones are four terabytes. From the price point, it seemed a lot better than the comparative models, such as Datto, Barracuda, and some of the others. I believe Barracuda was about $15,000 for four terabytes, and Quest was around $12,000 for six terabytes. Pricing is based on the period. There is just the maintenance fee that you have to pay annually, or you can pay for a three-year or four-year contract. This includes Premier Support."
  • "When I purchased the change to the license, it was $1,600. I think that was for changing the license. I don't believe that I had to purchase technical support in a while, so I must've bought maybe for five years, but I don't feel there was a huge cost involved in technical support. Its cost was definitely worth it because we've had a fantastic experience with them."
  • "Its price is okay. It is reasonable in terms of the way it works."
  • "I'm not aware of the exact cost of Quest Rapid Recovery because I'm from the technical team, but in general, the solution is quite competitive cost-wise."

    Overview

The PowerProtect DP series appliances is the integrated appliance solution from the Dell data protection appliances portfolio.

PowerProtect DP series appliance: Simple, efficient and agile data protection

The DP series is an all-in-one backup appliance that reduces the complexity of managing multiple data silos, point solutions and vendor relationships. The DP series simplifies deployment and management—while delivering powerful, enterprise-grade data protection capabilities for small, mid-size and enterprise organizations at a low cost-to-protect.

It is an integrated solution that offers complete backup, replication, recovery, deduplication, instant access and restore, search & analytics, seamless VMware integration — plus, cloud readiness with disaster recovery (DR) and long-term retention (LTR) to the cloud — all in a single appliance.

With the DP series, customers reduce their time-to-protect and become more agile with a solution that’s fast, protected more efficiently, can be recovered quickly and is reliable.

Simple to deploy, scale and manage

The DP series enables organizations to protect a broad ecosystem of applications quickly with a single system management console, consolidating workload protection, and eliminating infrastructure or data sprawl. The easy-to-use System Manager simplifies backups and automates daily tasks, including monitoring, management, reporting, analytics and search. The DP series delivers all-in-one data protection: protection storage and software, search and advanced monitoring and analytics, combined with cloud extensibility. It offers integration with VMware, SQL and Oracle management tools so that admins can use familiar UIs.

    Powerful cloud, performance and efficiency

The DP series can scale to fit the needs of enterprises with the ability to protect up to 195 PB (logical) of data to the public, private or hybrid clouds with Cloud Tier, with no additional hardware.7 Plus, native Cloud DR with end-to-end orchestration allows enterprises to copy backed-up VMs from on-premises DP series environments to the public cloud with AWS, Azure, or VMware Cloud on AWS —3 clicks to failover and 2 clicks to failback.

The DP series provides support for modern applications like MongoDB and MySQL and is optimized for VMware. It provides fast, single-step recovery of individual files, dynamic policies for VMs as well as complete VMware images, which can be instantly accessed and migrated live from the DP series appliance back to the production environment (using vMotion) while still running, further simplifying and optimizing VM recovery. Plus, instantly access up to 64 VMs with up to 60,000 IOPS to meet the strictest SLAs.

Data protection search simplifies file-level-recovery (FLR) activities with an easy-to-use search interface. The DP series is also built on the industry-proven Data Invulnerability Architecture (DIA), for encryption, fault detection, and healing.

    Quest Rapid Recovery Features

    • Rapid snap for virtual: Protect your growing virtual environment by protecting VMware and Hyper-V VMs without disrupting applications and users.
    • Live recovery: Restores operations rapidly with an RTO of minutes.
    • Virtual standby: If the primary machine has any problems, the virtual machine will be activated to take its place.

    Quest Rapid Recovery Benefits

    • Offers the ability to easily back up data in the data center and in the cloud.

    • Allows users to return to work quickly and without any impact on their business.

    • Functions as a single solution for both physical and virtual environments.

    Reviews from Real Users

Quest Rapid Recovery stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its ability to greatly reduce backup and recovery time and its ability to mount an entire server.

PeerSpot users take note of the advantages of these features in their reviews. Glenn R., an ICT network manager at St Christopher's School Hove, writes, “We have reduced our backup and recovery time by between 80% and 90%. Built-in encryption helps to secure our data as it travels from our on-site server to our off-site backup server.”

Bill V., a systems and network administrator at a tech services company, notes, “Probably the point-in-time recovery is most valuable. The other piece that is really nice is that you can mount a whole server at any point in time. So, you can mount the server with all the drives to a Z drive or something like that. It will just mount it all up, and your data is accessible right there on one drive, which is nice."
