Provides seamless backup integration and long-term reliability for enterprise data protection
The price is quite high; this product is not considered cheap. Additionally, if you use higher availability boxes, they also come at a premium price. However, they provide business continuity, which is the main reason why companies invest in this solution. Tape is slow; when restoring several virtual machines or databases amounting to several terabytes, Dell PowerProtect Data Domain represents the fastest and most reliable solution, ensuring great integration with backup software. If a customer has limited budget constraints, they may opt for cheaper external storage comprised of just a bunch of disks and utilize it for backup, as backup is not a business-critical service. However, I see great value in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain because it is fully automated, features great integration with backup software, and provides good value for money. I would rate software support as a ten, while I would give hardware support a seven. I never give any product a perfect score; I think Dell PowerProtect Data Domain deserves a nine. The only minor problems are the certificate issue and the price. These certificate issues are quite rare and mainly arise when we forget to restart and upgrade the box for several years.

Custom alerts and rich performance metrics have improved server monitoring and storage planning
We use customizable alerts extensively with different services, because the exchange services are different from Active Directory or DNS or anything else. We have customizable alerts for each service. I do not use the historical data trends that predict future storage needs. Perhaps some of my colleagues use it, but I do not. I would like to see a focus on broadcast services in the future to make it better. Broadcast services, specifically TV broadcast services, would be valuable to us because we come from a broadcast technology background and would appreciate having some features related to that. I would rate this review as an eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With the increasing amount of data handled every year, the money we save on tapes, plus the speed that the DD allows backups to be done and having instant restores, makes this product the best investment a backup environment can add."
"They're attempting to take backups from their backup solution, which has improved their overall scalability and storage efficiency because they transitioned from a traditional backup solution to a more advanced solution within the Veracode domain."
"Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is absolutely scalable."
"This solution from Dell EMC is the number one backup appliance."
"The solution allows us to take a huge number of backups, and the footprint is quite small."
"The major features of Dell PowerProtect Data Domain are that it is ready to use directly, provides deduplication and compression which significantly reduce storage requirements for backups and save capacity, and offers disaster recovery with two-sided replication so you can restart everything from the DR site while integrating with virtually any backup solution."
"It works within backup windows and has got good deduplication."
"In all these years, I never had a client who was unsatisfied with Data Domain."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."
"The performance metrics, especially for CPU and memory, and for the overall performance of the servers have been found most valuable."
"DO IT!!! You will not regret it."

Cons

"DDBoost function is not compatible with IBM TSM."
"Dell EMC PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is not a product that's easy to install by customers."
"Technical support needs improvement."
"There is a challenge when it comes to data recovery; the recovery window can exceed four to eight hours if you're dealing with backups older than five or ten years."
"Initial capital expenditure can easily run into six to seven figures, and the professional services setup cost surprises often stem from mandatory deployment services."
"Maybe the price is an area for improvement in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain."
"The pricing could be better, but it's still not too expensive."
"One area for improvement regarding Dell PowerProtect Data Domain is the support. We are in Pakistan and there is no physical support available on the software side."

"The number of similar alerts is the main area for improvement."
"Scalability is my sore spot."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing for this product could still be improved, though several years ago, its price was very high. When buying an IDPA product such as Dell EMC PowerProtect DD (Data Domain), you don't have to buy anything else, because you'll have an integrated solution: a data domain appliance plus software."
"On a scale where one represents high price, and ten represents low price, I rate the solution a five, which means that the solution is of medium pricing."
"The price of the solution and support for Dell PowerProtect DD is expensive. We have customers that cannot upgrade to a newer version of the solution because the support is too expensive."
"The approximate license cost for Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is around 5,00,000."
"The price is really high compared to other vendors. The licensing cost is huge. Normal, mid-tier companies or small-scale companies wouldn't be able to afford it easily."
"The price of Dell EMC PowerProtect DD could improve, it is expensive."
"The product is expensive."
"Dell PowerProtect DD's pricing is expensive, and there is no option for perpetual licensing."
