Useful log aggregation and management with helpful metrics aggregation
Datadog provides us value in three major ways: First, Datadog provides best-in-class functionality in many, if not all, of the products to which we subscribe (infrastructure, APM, log management, serverless, synthetics, real user monitoring, DB monitoring). In my experience with other tools that provide similar functionality, Datadog provides the largest feature set with the most flexibility and the best performance. Second, Datadog allows us to access all of those services in one place. Having to learn and manage only one tool for all of those purposes is a major benefit. Third, Datadog provides significant connectivity between those services so that we can view, summarize, organize, translate and correlate our data with maximum effect. Not needing to manually integrate them to draw lines between those pieces of information is a huge time savings for us.

Stable, scalable, and can be deployed on both cloud and on-premises
We usually need the solution to have extra protection against data breaches, as we have seen with our customers. The solution is deployed on the public cloud The solution works both outside and on-premises of the company, thus preventing secondary breaches from reaching the company's data. The…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Datadog is providing efficiency in the products we develop for the wireless device engineering department."
"The agents feature in Datadog stands out as a valuable asset within our organization due to its robust functionality, versatility, and role in providing comprehensive monitoring and observability capabilities."
"The most valuable aspect of the solution is the APM."
"The logging in general is one of my favorite features."
"Thanks to the logs, we manage to make better reports through Jira and also to trace the request with more facility than we would be able to do otherwise."
"Sometimes it's more user friendly for development teams. There are some parts of Datadog that are more understandable for development teams. For example, the APM in Datadog works more manually and works like the tools in New Relic or Grafana, or Elastic. It is easier to understand for software development teams."
"We've been able to glean from the monitors what servers are down, and can alert the team in Slack."
"The dashboards are super convenient to us for a more zoomed out view of what is going on with each integration that we utilize."
"The solution works both outside and on-premises of the company, thus preventing secondary breaches from reaching the company's data."

Cons

"I would like to see the integration between PagerDuty and Datadog improved. The tags in Datadog don't match those in PagerDuty, and we have to make it work."
"There is always room for improvement when dealing with cloud-based technologies. Mainly, I would say, it's just increasing our offerings to attract various other types of industries and businesses across more fields."
"There should be a clearer view of the expenses."
"We did have an issue where a synthetic test was set up before the holiday break, and we were quickly charged a great amount. Our team worked with Datadog, and they were able to help us out since it was inadvertent on our end and was a user error."
"We need more advanced querying against logs."
"The pricing model can be quite complex and might benefit from more flexible options tailored to different organizational needs."
"We need a lot of modules since we collect all data logs from all operating systems."
"I spent longer than I should have figuring out how to correlate logs to traces, mostly related to environmental variables."
"The cost of the solution has room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It didn't scale well from the cost perspective. We had a custom package deal."
"It is easy to run up a large bill, so become familiar with the cost of each piece of your bill and use the metrics they supply to estimate and monitor your bill."
"The tool is open-source."
"If you do your homework, you'll find that if you're really concerned with cost, it's good."
"Pricing and licensing are reasonable for what they give you. You get the first five hosts free, which is fun to play around with. Then it's about four dollars a month per host, which is very affordable for what you get out of it. We have a lot of hosts that we put a lot of custom metrics into, and every host gives you an allowance for the number of custom metrics."
"My advice is to really keep an eye on your overage costs, as they can spiral really fast."
"The price of Datadog is reasonable. Other solutions are more expensive, such as AppDynamics."
"It has a module-based pricing model."
"The cost of the solution is mid-ranged but worth the price."
