We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The diversity on offer is very, very good. Everything is supported. It's great.""We have VMware, Hyper-V, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL. We have a lot of different systems, and all of them are supported under one licensing agreement. That's one of the benefits.""Commvault integrates well with all types of operating systems and supports heterogeneous environments.""When an interruption takes place due to an incident, the signaling and notification are very extensive.""The initial setup is straightforward.""It helped us reduce the number of servers that are required for a stable operation.""We can use it on-premises and in the cloud.""Commvault can actually come in and assist you with aspects of the implementation - and they are quite helpful."

"The recovery time objective and recovery point objective were most valuable. It was easy to use, and it was easy to recover a file. I was the head of sales and a product evaluator for an MSSP, so I never had to deal with recovery from ransomware. However, I was confident that if ransomware had occurred, I would only lose a maximum of 59 minutes of data. The files were encrypted.""The solution has the capability to scale well."

Cons
"Our main pain point is that some of our hardware is old. For example, the SSD disks for our application database are slow. It's hard to avoid a slowdown in our environment because the size of our backups is growing every year. If you're growing and don't upgrade the environment, you will see slower backups and restores. You must enhance the environment if you are growing.""I would assess the Command Center as a very useful but sometimes difficult tool. It is multipurpose. It has all the features of logging and monitoring, especially for the actual setup. For us, it is easy because we work daily with it, but for customers who only use it once a week, they sometimes have some difficulties. Command Center is not user-friendly for beginners.""Commvault could make the product more cost-effective on the public cloud side. We are using this solution to back up whatever is still on-prem. We are not using it to back up what is on the public cloud because we have a native backup solution for that, which is provided by the vendor. As our footprint gets bigger, we will continue to evaluate this, but the last time that we did a cost analysis, the cost was not comparable to the solution that public clouds are offering.""Commvault has two management dashboards. The first is the CommCell Console, which is Java-based, and the second is Command Center. We don't always find all the features we need in the Command Center and we need to go through the Java console, and sometimes features are only on the Java console.""Persistent binding is a feature that I would like to see in the next release of Commvault.""When we started using Commvault, we felt that there were some technical issues with managing it, but we are comfortable enough with managing it now. There were many issues, like index corrupting, when we first started, but all those issues were resolved by the Commvault tech team.""We do not use Command Center, but we are using CommCell Console. We're navigating and manipulating the entire environment by using CommCell Console, and we are comfortable with it. We didn't find Command Center user-friendly. We found it a bit difficult to use. It decreases the efficiency of the tasks to be performed. It was probably implemented as a centralized application to manage all environments, but it was probably not a good idea. I and my colleagues across the globe are comfortable with using CommCell Console rather than Command Center.""There are two ways to use it and I prefer the web-based one over the app. I wish they were a little bit more matched in what they offer because the features aren't as available in the web-based interface as they are in the app."

More Commvault Complete Data Protection Cons →

"I don't have any feedback to provide in terms of features that may be lacking.""At the time I was using it, I would've focused more on signatures of malicious software in the cloud. I love Datto, and I know they're on the right path, but I probably would've focused more on the operating system update management. When you go from the desk to the cloud or from the server room to the cloud, everything changes. Everything is different. You're not in control of your servers anymore. It is from the Active Directory management perspective and not from the perspective of zero-day attacks or other similar things. At the time, more focus on zero-day attacks and business email compromise (BEC) would've been a better protection factor than just educating about how many of these attacks have occurred."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The licensing costs are determined on a yearly basis. It might be around $40,000 or $50,000. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
  • "The price could always be lower."
  • "One of the issues with backup vendors is that they overprice, or overvalue their products."
  • "The price should be reduced because it is too expensive for our customers."
  • "The price is a little bit high."
  • "The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
  • "In India, this is a very expensive product."
  • "Its cost is reasonable, but anybody else can do better benchmarking."

  • "As the company grew from business continuity—or what used to be called business BCDR—they brought on services. Certain services, such as SaaS protection, were a value-add, but you would expect to pay for them. They are not going to be free. It is just the life that you live when you're evaluating software vendors, partners, etc. There is going to be some form of a base offering, and then there are going to be different tiers that you need to get up to a better level."

    Overview

Commvault® Complete Data Protection is a data protection and information management solution that runs on a single platform with a unified code base. Commvault enables companies worldwide to protect, access, and use all their data, anywhere and anytime, turning data into a powerful strategic asset. Commvault provides the resources and expertise to accelerate the return to normal business operations after a data loss event or an attack.

After installing the Commvault software, the data is processed by the agent software on client computers and backed up through the “MediaAgent” (Commvault’s data manager) to a hard disk or to cloud storage. All activity in the environment is backed up by a centralized server. Commvault users can then access the protected data using web browsers from desktop or mobile devices. The Commvault software is available across both cloud and on-premises environments.

    Reviews from Real Users

Commvault stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Some of the major ones are its backup, recovery, and data protection features as well as its centralized management.

Sheron B. a systems engineer at PAREXEL International Corporation writes, “I like that you have complete hooks into and total control of your data. The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform.

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of Commvault. An engineer at a tech services company writes, "When it comes to recovery, Commvault is undeniably one of the best technologies out there. It's got all the different granularity levels that a business requires to get your information back to production. For example, we have their commission discovery, individual items recovery, mailbox recovery, databases, and different tables. Some databases can be recovered individually. This level of granularity enables us to get the most value out of the product."

Datto Cloud Continuity for PCs is much more than just cloud backup. MSPs can protect clients’ Windows-based computers from downtime and data loss and more importantly, rapidly recover data if disaster strikes.
