If I had to summarize what specifically could be improved in Debian, the only thing I would do is rolling release, as some other operating systems are doing. I can see why they do not do it, but I can also see that it would be helpful so that if there are things done better in a newer kernel, that could be integrated in quicker. I usually build my own kernels to suit specific applications for specific customers, and it pays to do that anyway with any Linux. I find Debian tends to have all of the switches available in their kernel build so that you can turn features on or off, include them, or leave them out, whatever you need to do.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The platform's most effective feature is quickly recovering virtual instances into a separate environment."
"When I mention retro-compatibility and stability, it has saved me time and reduced downtime significantly."
"The internet runs on Linux, and websites will run on LAMP Stack Debian, which is very easy to deploy."
"LAMP Stack Debian is a very solid product, well-known, well-maintained, and very popular."
"The benefit is significant because it has resulted in a drastic reduction in downtime and maintenance costs, knowing that a routine security update will not break anything and that the PHP runtime environments and Apache configuration provide me with enormous peace of mind in my daily work."
"LAMP Stack Debian has streamlined our operational overhead because it is highly predictable and universally respected by Linux engineers."
"LAMP Stack Debian has impacted my organization positively because it is easy to set up and there is no cost related to licensing since the entire stack is open-source."
"I have six nines of reliability on all of my servers, making it 99% stable without glitches or latency problems."
"LAMP Stack Debian positively impacts our organization by making our development process easy for PHP applications, providing many features, and improving our productivity."

Cons

"They could add more intelligence features in the workflow through automation."
"LAMP Stack Debian can be improved by addressing the lack of a built-in caching mechanism."
"LAMP Stack Debian sometimes has concerns about the memory usage or speed, and sometimes competitors like Nginx or Lighttpd have better results in those areas."
"The primary drawback of LAMP Stack Debian's hyper-focus on stability is that the software versions in the stable repository channels for PHP, MySQL, and MariaDB packages can become outdated quickly relative to the fast-moving web ecosystems."
"Community support does not help on my projects particularly, but if a component of a project needs help with something, I usually look at all of the community threads on it, and there are hundreds of different threads on different forums for it."
"I do not think it is the best stack out there; I think there are better stacks out there, but it depends on your use case, and it is boring but proven and good."
"The main drawback is the old age of the packages; in the stable branch, I do not get the latest versions of PHP, Apache, or similar software."
"Regarding areas of LAMP Stack Debian that could be improved or enhanced, while it is very nice as is, one area might be the caching mechanism."
