Scales well, reliable, and has good support
I was their technical support for a year. The support is pretty good. Locally, it is available in the United States. They provide technical support to distributors such as Appnet and Arrow first. It's the first line of defense. Then you progress to a higher level of support. They have people, such as experts, all over the country who interface and provide fairly quick solutions, as well as hardware and software reviews. They can also return to the original developers in Taiwan. Broadcom is a Taiwan-based company. They can return to those guys. There are some guys in Israel that they collaborate with. It's pretty good in terms of support but it all comes down to money or the size of the opportunity. They will bend over backward to provide tons of direct support if the opportunity is large enough. If it's a small opportunity, you are not as fortunate.

VLAN support has improved audiovisual installations and secures network traffic for our projects
Our major use cases include audiovisual installations and we mainly use the AV line for that. We work with the VLAN support feature The best things about NETGEAR Switches are the support they provide and the ease of implementation. The ease of installation helps with network performance. It helps…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"They have some of the fastest speeds available."
"While Cisco is most likely the leader, Broadcom is probably number two, both in terms of interoperability and speed."
"For what I used this switch for, it did well."
"The solution is stable."
"Their online portal is one of the most useful features. The portal is very user-friendly, so even someone with not a lot of tech experience can go in and see what's going on with the switch."
"They are reasonably priced and have worked pretty well for us."
"NETGEAR Switches have increased the throughput and speed of internal communication, and have improved our network efficiency."
"The GS-108 switch by Netgear is an excellent solution for setting up a wired gigabit network."
"The remote management has been awesome."
"The tool is stable."

Cons

"Broadcom's biggest issue is that they don't like to share information."
"Broadcom's biggest issue is that they don't like to share information. They are only interested in providing the bare minimum of documentation."
"NETGEAR should focus on eliminating single points of failure."
"There is a lot of delay in the data coming to the servers."
"Their old firmware was a problem for us and we're still working on it."
"One thing I have asked for, something that NETGEAR lacks that I would love to see — and from what I understand it's in the works — is a REST API to programmatically interface with multiple switches. That would be a great feature."
"The installation process is long. It takes one hour to make an account, to go to the switch web interface, et cetera."
"An area for improvement would be creating a wizard that can do a lot of common stuff."
"I would also like to see switches with more ports that provide room for new protocols of communications."
"It is an expensive product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's approximately $1,000,000.00 if you want to get a license for the software."
"There are two parts to the pricing. There's the pricing of the device itself, which is good. Their licensing model needs work, though. The licensing model doesn't fit the way MSPs do business."
"The product is priced economically."
"It is a slightly expensive product."
"Licensing is always a hassle and a pain point."
"The pricing for what you get with the Insight product line is very fair and the value is there, including the annual licensing fees for the Insight Pro for each device... the Insight Pro level, which is their highest level, where you get a lot of features with the Insight, is a bargain. You get a lot of good features for what you're paying there annually."
"In terms of the NETGEAR stuff, there weren't any surprises. The costs were definitely fair, especially considering what we were replacing. For the equivalent performance from a non-AV over IP solution, it would have been easily been in the $40,000 range. Comparing it to standard AV video switching, the price was very good, especially considering now they can add-on without any massive additional costs."
"We find the cost of NETGEAR hardware and additional services to be below average compared to the top tier. There are still cheaper products out there, but they lack in functionality."
"It is not expensive."
