The solution is stable and can be used for monitoring and managing events, but it does not provide application or service monitoring features
We are moving from basic monitoring to AIOps, where we can do things like self-healing. We also want to create dashboards for IT and business users to show the status of their services. We have done a couple of demos. I recommend the solution to others. Overall, I rate the product a seven out of ten.

A highly stable solution that can be used to monitor system availability
The most valuable feature of Opsview is the ability to clone the services when you're monitoring something out of the test setup. You can clone that service, and it allows you to add new services quickly. You can bring up new servers, and you can easily add them. Also, there's an API to be able to add services as well. We don't use the API. We mostly use the cloning function because it stores everything in a back-end database. The underlying monitoring platform for our version is Nagios. That's where we upgraded from Nagios to Opsview.

Enables seamless global client monitoring with reliable remote connectivity
I use the solution to provide a perfect environment for remote connectivity with my clients. Many tools that I require for system maintenance are included. I can easily monitor all of my clients throughout the world I did not give much thought to it, however, improvements could be made to Zabbix.…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like the deep-dive detail and end-user metrics data. The synthetic monitor is the best one. The best point of the new one is that there's no need for configuration. You can inject the Java script and start to change major developments in the application. This is a good approach, and we received all the data using this."
"It has provided us with a single location to host all events to be viewed/monitored by our NOC. This has greatly helped them to streamline their processes."
"BMC TrueSight Operations Management is easily scalable."
"The ability to pull hosts together to show what processes are running, so it can be used for change management."
"It is very helpful to be able to apply rule-based routing to alerts."
"We can verify uptimes as another source of keeping devices in compliance."
"It is a scalable solution."
"Intelligent solution with a proactive monitoring feature and consolidated dashboard that's stable and easy to scale."
"We use this solution for internal monitoring our own cloud platform because we are a public cloud provider. We also use it for monitoring purposes on behalf of our clients."
"I am satisfied with the overall product since it works well…It is a stable solution."
"It's a good solution. It covers all aspects of monitoring purposes."
"What was very compelling about OpsView was that we could dial out the noise and have meaningful and actionable alerts."
"The most valuable feature of Opsview is the ability to clone the services when you're monitoring something out of the test setup."
"We have found that Zabbix is more easy to use than other applications."
"It's a very reliable platform and we've never had any issues regarding the scalability or the stability of Zabbix."
"Setup was straightforward. Initial deployment took two or three months."
"In terms of customization and integration, we have more flexibility. We can automate configurations, define deletion rules, and customize based on the needs. The client interface allows for further configuration, making it quite comprehensive."
"Like other common Linux distributions, some of the most valuable features of this solution are the ease of use and deployment. It's simple and has a lot of packages and a lot of software."
"There is a problems page that shows us every warning or problem that occurs on our VMs globally. The map screen is also really useful because this is something that was missing. I don't know every other tool in the market. So, I don't know if this is a good point of only Zabbix, or other tools are also doing it, but from my point of view, this is the most useful page that I use, along with the problems page that efficiently lists the problem, recovery time, ending hours, starting hours, and so on."
"Simple network monitoring that is easy to install and manage."
"It can send messages to our ticketing system."

Cons

"I would like to see a little more out-of-the-box event correlation and expanded AIOps type capabilities. Where you can train your artificial intelligence operations to be able to memorize an issue once you encounter one scenario, so if you encounter that same problem, you can get to the root cause very quickly."
"It would be better if the initial setup and deployment were more straightforward."
"I think the ease of deployment needs to be looked at. It would be great if the deployment was faster and easier."
"More modules for less popular applications and better documentation."
"We were somewhat limited in TrueSight due to some of the RBAC controls not quite being what we wanted as far as delegating out administrative privileges for implementation. But because we were able to turn requests around pretty well, that burden wasn't too heavy."
"BMC TrueSight Operations Management could use some enhancements in the application visibility tools."
"This solution is lacking in application monitoring features. Technical support for this solution also needs improvement, particularly in product knowledge and response time."
"The knowledge modules could be more lightweight in size. At present, the installation packages can be quite large."
"In a future release, we would like to have Observ for AI. Any AI and intelligence it can add to the monitoring is obviously beneficial. We would also like to have automated callouts."
"Customized reporting can be improved."
"Pricing and a few certain aspects in the solution needs to be improved."
"Some of the graphics on Opsview could be improved."
"Maybe the graphical representation can be improved. It can be enhanced for better visualization. It could be a little better. And the graph center can be improved."
"The solution needs to add features for finding loopholes or problems and their root causes."
"Zabbix does not draw automatic mapping of the network, this is something they should add in the future. There is a lot of effort that is involved in tailoring some of the settings which could be made easier."
"If you want to use all of the features then you have to pay a licensing fee."
"Zabbix isn't a great tool for cloud-specific monitoring - its connection to public clouds needs to be improved. Other areas for improvement would be the lack of dashboards and integrations."
"The performance reporting could be improved."
"There are areas of improvement. The database grows really fast. So, when you install Zabbix, you have to deal with some issues, like the database. We become pretty big very fast."
"The GUI could be more intuitive. Also, we'd like streaming telemetry. Zabbix might have this feature, but I haven't seen it yet. It took us a long time to get started because the documentation isn't very descriptive. We had to go through various sources like YouTube and forums to get this solution working."
"The product could be more secure and more stable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Though I have no clue about the tool's actual price, I know that it is astronomical."
"The solutions are not the cheapest but are robust and stable. License model is rather complex and BMC do often change the model."
"They have changed the licensing fees."
"We're end-of-lifeing it now. Overall, the licensing costs of BMC are a challenge for us in that they're hard costs, whereas open-source monitoring has soft costs, where it's harder to line-item."
"The only possible additional cost that I can mention, that you might not be aware of, is that it uses Oracle partitioning, if you use Oracle. There are Oracle partitioning fees that go with that."
"Use conservative figures. In terms of hardware, monitored servers and also effort. The product is not cheap. But as with other products, you get what you pay for."
"The solution is based on endpoints and knowledge models which can be costly."
"We pay license fees of between $150 and $200 per asset. There is an enterprise software license fee, and then you pay a percentage for your maintenance, and then Premier Support. For example, if you buy a two-year license for the product, then the maintenance fee is added to that for two years at X percent a year. Then there's a small fee on top of that for Premier Support..."
"The solution is not cheap. I think that the pricing is a little bit on the high side."
"The solution is priced similarly to other tools offering similar features."
"I would rate pricing a seven out of ten, where ten is the highest price."
"It is open source. If you want to have a subscription or official support, you can pay for it. They have different plans, which are not that expensive. The plans are based on per monitoring server, not per monitored equipment. So, it is not at all expensive, and you can also live without the support if you want a cheaper option."
"This solution is completely open-source, so it is quite affordable."
"There is no license but we need to pay for support."
"There are no licenses."
"The solution is free. However, many open-sourced tools start out free but eventually start charging."
"We were searching for an open source solution and Zabbix fit the bill because it is free and open source under the GPL license."
"Zabbix is an open-source tool, and it's free to use."
"Zabbix is free but if you use it in production then you have to pay for it."

Nagios vs. Zabbix vs. PRTG vs. Spiceworks vs. Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor
I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want…
