Granular control over website access has lead to decreased bandwidth and increased performance
If you have previously worked on the product then it is quite simple. However, if you are new to it then the implementation is a little bit tricky. On the Cloud Proxy, the deployment takes less than one day. If you are using the ProxySG or the on-premises solution, it will take one to two weeks depending on the policy configuration, the size of the organization, and what kinds of policies are needed. The number of staff you need to maintain the solution depends on the size of the organization, and how many changes occur on a daily basis. If you have one thousand employees then you need at least one employee to look after it.

Reduces operational costs through bandwidth optimization but struggles with high traffic licensing and complex deployments
The logs in Steelhead are fantastic. There is a deep level of logs such as top 10 docker and top 50 docker. I can check from the top 50 docker which type of application is optimizing well and which type of traffic is not optimized. Steelhead provides logs and percentage levels, which is good. I can see any type of log report, report security, different types of report availability, but it is not customizable. Overall, this is a good feature. Steelhead provides real-time optimization with graphs and tables on real-time optimization, informing us packet by packet including port, source IP, destination IP, and destination port number. This reporting and real-time monitoring is fantastic, although I faced a problem in Oracle. Steelhead mainly saves the money that needs to be paid to ISPs. My actual traffic is around 2 GB, but I purchased a link from the ISP for only around 700 to 800 MB. All the prices that need to be paid monthly to the ISP are saved, which is a significant saving for my company after using Riverbed.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We were able to monitor users' social media behavior and control certain activities to be allowed on the social media, which helped to prevent data loss and other activities that could result in a negative impact to the organization."
"The functionality of this solution is one of the best, and it is leading the market."
"It features intuitive proxy policy deployment using a VPN."
"Since the implementation of this solution, the bandwidth has decreased and the performance in terms of Internet access has increased."
"Proxy Solution and ADN and their integration capability with Blue Coat director are positive features."
"It's a great solution for high load enterprise infrastructure to protect company networks from web threats."
"Customer Service: Blue Touch support is top notch and very responsive when I opened service requests."
"Proxy Solution and ADN, specifically its integration capability with Blue Coat Director to apply seamless policy across all of Blue Coat, along with intuitive proxy policy deployment using VPN and the ability to forward-chain your proxy, make it overall a good solution though growth requires automation support."
"I find the most valuable to be the compression and exchange replication."
"Riverbed has excellent technical support."
"Customer service is really efficient, Riverbed TAC access is quick and easy, and the service is globally valuable."
"Without Riverbed WAN Optimization, it took one hour to send one gig of traffic, but with Riverbed, one gig of traffic was sent in five minutes."
"We've been very pleased with the solution and its capabilities over the years."
"Scalable data referencing is the most valuable feature developed by Riverbed."
"It's helped to reduce WAN traffic by approximately 60%."
"It is very good at optimizing WAN traffic and it has so many more features on top of that which help global enterprises monitor, identify and police traffic by application type, IP subnet, source, and/or destination."

Cons

"There were benefits but the evolution is slow, hence wanting to move on with the product."
"They need to improve the intellectual analysis for APT vectors from web."
"We cannot automate the product since the IP address can only be assigned after acquisition of the serial number."
"The GUI works, but could be better."
"It would be great if the product had inbuilt queuing for Quality of Service."
"Blue Coat advertises the ProxySG as a WAF, but it really isn’t."
"It lacks deployment over multiple platforms and integration with SDN architecture."
"Application response time and network performance could be improved."
"Need to handle more traffic simultaneously."
"The application response time of the solution can be improved."
"If we load a primary firewall, the secondary firewall usually handles all the active connections, but in Riverbed, this isn't the case. We lose all the active connections at the moment of failure."
"I didn't like the way platforms were scaled – if you started with a top end model of one of the tiers, if you needed to upgrade you had to rip and replace the box with a whole new one."
"I would like to see improvement in the solution’s configuration and protocol aspects. We have got some configurations that are not set. I would also like to simplify the call detection of some protocols."
"The Central Management Console (CMC) newly named SteelCentral Controller (SCC) has rudimentary netflow capabilities, but it doesn’t have particularly in-depth data."
"Setting up QoS marking is not all that intuitive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Additional features, such as Flash Proxies, have their own licensing fees that depend on what the requirements are."
"Across our 12 data centers, we spend around $150k annually."
"The solution is expensive and the service contacts are costly too. The cost of the device makes the value proposition borderline acceptable for us. The service contract fees we pay is approximately $30,000 annually."
