Streamlines data migration across platforms with cost-effective and scalable solutions
We have the continuous data integration feature, but it does not work very well in our given ecosystem because we have huge data volume, and it reads from archive log rather than the redo sequence. That is where it lacks, so we are not able to do continuous streaming data injection. The ability to handle heterogeneous migrations for our organization is adequate. I do not see a major value add, or see it as a marquee feature. It is a good tool, but we do not have that sort of uses requirement. In my 10 plus years of experience, I do not see that kind of requirement where I have to replicate it in real time. I leverage AWS CloudWatch for addressing migration issues. The major challenges come across CDC. We have created latency filter and everything, but there is no way to control it. Due to the nature of our business, the transactions increase during month end and year end. My transactions are supposed to increase, my workloads on my core system increases, but my DMS is not able to keep up with them, even if I increase it to a higher side. Improvements could be made in AWS Database Migration Service. Because of that, I am moving out of DMS now to a STRIIM solution. DMS works within AWS ecosystem, but they also have to look for third party solutions. Now Snowflake is a bigger player, or Databricks. Something that could be possible as a connector, whether paid or free, but giving as a connector to that ecosystem as well.

Offers good scalability, strong stability and seamless integration
The user interface is really user-friendly and intuitive. It was a major plus. The integration process was smooth. Oracle's security is good and significantly better than that of other solutions I've encountered. Previously, we had separate data interfaces for 15 concrete mixing plants, requiring manual document creation in Oracle. Now, with integrated automation, production has become much easier and more efficient over the past three years.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"AWS Database Migration Service is affordable and cheaper."
"For our simple requirement of migration, DMS is just a typical AWS RDS with an IPSec tunnel to Oracle. The most valuable features for us are the networking capabilities like VPCs and VPNs."
"We have the ability to bring data for all tables of a database in one go, as long as the tables follow a particular naming convention."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the one I use for report generation. The security risk is very low."
"The way it works is brilliant, and it's based on similar logic to Oracle's GoldenGate migration tool in that you can migrate everything from data tables to schemas from one database to another."
"AWS Database Migration Service enabled me to migrate an on-premises database to AWS with minimal downtime, which is a great offering from AWS."
"Saving the data that is in use is easy."
"This efficient workflow has been particularly helpful."
"This solution can maintain a large volume of data and is flexible to what data it can handle. The performance is very good."
"The user interface is really user-friendly and intuitive."

Cons

"Years ago, the price was nominal and acceptable for the client to do a migration. Now, prices are challenging, especially with versions continually changing."
"Whatever solution worked today can not be reused in the next migration."
"The stability of AWS Database Migration Service for online CDC records also needs to be improved."
"Migrating from here and pushing the data from on-premise to AWS cloud is a big challenge and a few more services from AWS would be helpful. For example, we are currently using ILDB internet tools which move data from on-premise to the AWS cloud. A few more services would be really helpful for me to move the master data."
"There are a set of complexities and challenges when a user wants to integrate AWS products with Microsoft products."
"The names of the services need improvement since AWS doesn't indicate what the function of the product is presently. You need to read a lot to find the service that you want in the product."
"More endpoints need to be supported by AWS Database Migration Service. There's also a need for more control and transparency on the product, including better technical support."
"One drawback I experienced was with balance and sync."
"The solution could improve by adding more advanced features."
"There is room for improvement in the pricing."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is on the higher side."
"In terms of pricing, I'd rate it an eight out of ten, considering it's a well-priced solution."
"For Egypt, the product's prices are high, making it a specific problem in one region and not globally."
"AWS Database Migration Service is the least expensive solution, but is still expensive."
"AWS Database Migration Service is very inexpensive."
"The solution’s pricing is reasonable."
"The pricing is per hour, though I do not have the exact figures. If you have specific questions about the service, a personal support team from Amazon is available, but this will bring in additional costs."
"I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten."
