Infrastructure code has become reusable and now integrates seamlessly with application logic
The best features that AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) offers include providing a better experience of working with infrastructure as code by offering higher level and usable constructs, choosing my preferred language, allowing the use of any programming elements like parameters, conditions, conditionals, loops, compositions, and inheritance to define the desired outcome of infrastructure. There is also the CDK library of infrastructure constructs. AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) integrates with CloudFormation to deploy and provision infrastructure on AWS, which are some of the benefits and features. The ability to choose my preferred programming language has helped my workflow significantly, as I can use my preferred languages such as JavaScript or C#, along with the programming elements in that language such as parameters, conditionals, loops, compositions, and inheritance to define the desired outcome of my infrastructure and application logic. I benefit from developing infrastructure in my preferred IDE, which includes syntax highlighting and intelligent code completion that has helped my workflow. The benefits of AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) include multi-language support, so if I am familiar with a specific programming language, instead of writing YAML or JSON files, I can use my own language such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, .NET, or Go. There is also IDE support and improved developer experience, along with reusable components, namely AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) constructs that encapsulate AWS best practices. These have positively impacted my organization. Reduced errors and an improvement in the code are specific outcomes I can share regarding AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK). Earlier, I used to write JSON or YAML syntax. After the introduction of typed languages like TypeScript, I can catch configuration errors at compile time rather than during deployment, which significantly reduces debugging time. This has greatly reduced the errors I encounter.

Has supported container-based deployments and improved infrastructure visibility through monitoring tools
Aria Operations, formerly known as VMware vRealize Operations, has been renamed to vROps. We are currently using this for monitoring purposes. For orchestration, we are using VCD to automate Telco Cloud. VCD is an automation tool, and we are also using VMware Tanzu Platform for the Kubernetes environment, alongside TKG, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid. These are also other solutions for the Tanzu Kubernetes environment. For Telco Cloud, we are using it to automate our company's operations, which is for a telecom company. We are familiar with these products, especially vCenter, ESXi, VCD, vCF, and vROps. It is very easy to integrate applications when we deploy vCenter and ESXi since we can enable vSphere with Tanzu feature. We can build namespaces and provide application developers the platform to deploy their applications on pods within containerization. We can easily manage, pull results, and create containers efficiently, making it a simple way to handle applications. We provide namespace labels for application developers, and we can manage their resources along with other aspects easily. Regarding security, we use many tools such as CDX and LDAP, AD for integrating our Kubernetes cluster with the developer teams. We can manage roles and permissions simply. It is very straightforward to integrate with EDX and other third-party tools, Active Directory, to the Kubernetes cluster, allowing easy access and management.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"AWS CDK has notably streamlined the deployment process compared to other methods, primarily by defining cloud infrastructure as code."
"Reduced errors and an improvement in the code are specific outcomes I can share regarding AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK), as I can now catch configuration errors at compile time rather than during deployment, which significantly reduces debugging time and has greatly reduced the errors I encounter."
"AWS CDK offers seamless integration, which was a significant factor in choosing it for cloud computing."
"AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) has impacted my organization positively in terms of productivity; you do not need to write the code again and again, we can use SaaS services, and the accuracy provided by AWS and AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) is much higher, so we do not need to worry about failures."
"You can use AWS CDK to write code to provision infrastructure."
"One of the most valuable aspects of CDK is its ability to integrate various components seamlessly, such as Lambda functions, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and EventBridge."
"The setup process is very straightforward."
"The most valuable features of the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) are its speed and ease of deployment."
"VMware Tanzu Mission Control has many valuable features, such as ease of use and customization."
"The most important feature of Tanzu Mission Control is its integration with the other products, especially with ESX and vSAN. This is a strong part of Tanzu Mission Control. In other solutions, such as OpenShift or Kubernetes, you can find similar features, but they don't have similar integration. With Tanzu Mission Control, you get a total solution with only one provider. You have the integration with the infrastructure, virtualization of networking, and virtualization of storage. You have a natural integration, and you don't have the problem of integrating it with different products or providers. Sometimes, different companies have good integration, but it is not always guaranteed. For example, many years ago, Cisco and VMware were good partners in networking, but when VMware started to sell ESX, the relationship was broken. This is the problem that you can face when you are using solutions from two different companies."
"The solution is integrated very well with a lot of other systems. Also, its GUI is very good."
"It definitely gives the end customer a good overview and perspective of running applications in terms of overall workload footprint. TMC provides a very detailed description of your cloud-native application in the form of graphical visualization."
"With Tanzu Mission Control, you get a total solution with only one provider."
"The support from VMware is very good."
"It has provided us with one central point where we can easily track our product QA, and our project resources, across multiple projects and multiple business units."
"Tanzu is easy to upgrade and scale, whether we're talking about horizontal or vertical scaling. It is as smooth as possible without any downtime. The platform maintenance, upgrading, and operations part is very smooth."

Cons

"In that condition, if a developer accidentally pushes those environment variables to other things such as GitHub or any SCM, there are chances that a particular hacker or an unintended person can access our whole infrastructure."
"There are some issues with different plugins."
"There is room for improvement in the use of EventBridge and the initial setup of CDK, which can be a bit challenging."
"Using AWS CDK requires some knowledge of popular programming languages."
"They could allow combining multiple languages, such as JavaScript and Python for the platform. At present, we can use only one language."
"The primary issue we've encountered is pricing. Some customers find the pricing to be somewhat high. Additionally, there's a discrepancy between the promised resource utilization and the actual utilization. The resource utilization calculations don't align with the provided guidelines. So, the pricing and resource utilization calculations could be refined."
"One potential area for expansion would be leveraging AI capabilities, which my customer might be interested in exploring as they grow."
"The solution is currently focused on VMware infrastructure and I would like to see more options made available."
"The network control and security policies must be improved."
"Another area of improvement is pricing."
"This product doesn't have a GUI. In order to use it properly, I need to connect it to a new GUI or build a GUI to manage it — it's pretty difficult."
"The installation of VMware Tanzu Service Mesh is very complex."
"The solution's initial setup process was complex...The solution could benefit from improved customization and visibility for its users."
"LYNX is a managed cluster solution that takes care of specific details within a cluster, such as sequences or services. I haven't seen this feature in Tanzu Mission Control."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing cost is expensive."
"It is not the most expensive option, and I believe the capabilities align well with the value it provides."
"The least expensive licensing cost for VMware is around $350 per core."
"The solution is bundled in with Cloud Foundry so the pricing is not independent."
"The solution is only for large or medium size enterprises because it is expensive."
"The license for VMware Tanzu Application Service is expensive. The license should be cheaper."
"The price of VMware Tanzu Mission Control is greater than that of Red Hat's competitor solution"
"VMware Tanzu Mission Control is cheaper than Red Hat OpenShift."
