Manages virtual machine backups smoothly and simplifies restoration across environments
It is quite easy to manage AWS Backup's centralized console for multiple environments. The product's interface is intuitive. AWS Backup has a much higher price if you compare it with the snapshots. I have to pay for the whole environment by AWS. We have a backup solution with only virtual machines. The rest of it, we have a restore point.

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The snapshots we take through AWS Backup are very effective."
"The solution's most valuable features are its backup capability and tight integration with other AWS services."
"RDS backup is one of the most crucial components of any client's cloud environment, so we generally use that. Additionally, we store EBS snapshots in S3."
"Overall, AWS Backup provides value in terms of time and money through its periodic backup capabilities."
"When I was using an on-premises backup, there was an external hard drive or something like that, and I had a backup server, but I had a few problems related to transfer when I had to restore something that I have deleted, as I had to wait for after-office hours to do something like that, but now I just have to send a mail and within one hour I have my restored file."
"It's very easy to configure. Since it's a managed service, it's very straightforward to set up and use. And my customers get on with it very fast."
"We can directly back up EC2 instances in AWS without using any third-party applications."
"AWS Backup is secure and comes with a vault that ensures data is never deleted, offering great security."
"We are getting rid of our tape libraries, so this is an alternative to that, we don't have to have 100s and 1000s of tapes, and we are going into the cloud, so this helps us go into the cloud while providing better security for backup data."
"We're doing AWS S3 with Glacier with cloud-based backup and the integration is good, as it works with Veeam and Commvault."
"Considering the disaster recovery scenarios, I want to assess NetApp AltaVault's ability to minimize the recovery time objective (RTO) and what positive impact I have seen from the product so far."
"It's so easy to work with."
"The solution is great for reducing headaches in the IT department."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data, as you're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"Leverage the SE and the technical expertise within NetApp; they offer really great services, and they'll provide you with an honest approach to how to address your business problems."
"The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that it is easy to use and integrate with whichever operating systems you use, providing you with a complete view, especially when you plan to migrate to some other operating system."

Cons

"The time it takes to complete the backups could be reduced."
"AWS Backup could benefit from including more services."
"This backup tool does the full backup of the entire snapshot server. I would like to have the option to not do the full server backup."
"The AWS Backup backend reporting is a major area that needs improvement."
"It could be less expensive."
"To create a plan and for all the configuration, one has to do multiple steps, which could be organized in a much simpler way, making the user experience better."
"There are some limitations to partial backup in AWS Backup."
"If AWS Backup were a hybrid solution that also supported on-premises backups then it would be very helpful, especially if you are doing a migration to the cloud."
"To clarify, the catalog feature is lacking, and you need to depend on somebody else."
"The solution needs faster indexing."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"I would like to see more web support."
"My advice is to stick with ONTAP and ownCloud because NetApp AltaVault is going to die."
"We've had a lot of issues, crashed the service console a lot, service crashes."
"I would like to see more web support."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is okay."
"There are no licensing costs for AWS Backup. You pay only for the amount of backup storage you use and then the data transferred between regions. Overall AWS Backup is priced reasonably."
"AWS Backup is free of cost, but we need to pay for the backup storage being used."
"The pricing is decent."
"AWS Backup is a very cheap solution."
"There is a lot of flexibility with the services and pricing. The price is reasonable when compared to other products. This is very good for us."
"The product is inexpensive."
"Our customers pay a monthly AWS fee that includes the AWS Backup service."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The price is a bit high."
