Q&A Highlights
Question: Veritas NetBackup vs Acronis Backup - do you have a technical comparison?
Answer: I think it's not possible to compare "enterprise backup tools" (NetBackup) with simple "imaging tools" :)

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"All the necessary features required to set up a proper backup are already present in Acronis Backup.""The web-based interface makes it easy to use.""The most valuable feature is its ability to back up and recover our production environment from ransomware.""It's a good solution that's very easy to use. Acronis has two valuable features. The first one is creating images, and the other is starting virtual machines in the cloud so the client can work immediately.""The most valuable features of Acronis Backup are cloning and many other capabilities. For example, you are able to clone the whole operating system and drive. Additionally, the solution is a complete package.""It actually does its job very well and has interesting capabilities, but it has the most awful interface.""The backup timing and restoring process is great compared to other options.""In my opinion, it's the best product for end-users and PCs."

"Backup and recovery software with great stability, and can support large-scale environments.""This is the best solution that I know of.""We are quite satisfied with the performance and reliability of the NetBackup product. When it comes to specific features, the most valuable is the Instant Recovery feature, which we call "short-term IR". Instant Recovery allows users to spin up backup images and bring back any VM instantly.""NetBackup is very easy for end-users.""Deduplication is quite efficient. It is not a complex product. It is quite simple.""I think the support is fine. We haven't had issues with it.""The deduplication feature is useful. Deduplication and compression features are what I like about NetBackup.""It has been around for so long, and it is very in-depth. It has a solution for everything that you can cover."

Cons
"If I could create a protected image backup on a computer partition that just would be just for the image backup; and only the program could access it to prevent viruses from getting into it. That would be very, very good.""No technical support and minimal documentation.""In some cases, at the time of reinstallation, some disasters happen. For the licensing on the computer the name of the computer and domain, everything is removed from the registry level. Then we have to install the Acronis from the start for it to work properly. Otherwise, the Acronis software will cause a lot of trouble at the time of reinstallation. That's where they need to improve the product. In the case people want to install the same software with the same hardware, it should not stop me.""Acronis Backup has a straightforward initial setup process and an easy-to-use interface. However, a potential issue for Acronis partners is that registered partners do not have access to marketing materials, which can make it difficult for them to reach mass markets and sell the product. This could be improved by allowing registered partners to access marketing materials and tools, such as email templates, that would help them to promote Acronis Backup effectively.""It could have a better ability to manage backups over a longer period.""It would be nice if it could support more types of storage: EMC, HPE, Veeam, etc.""Their support process can be quite lengthy...This is an area that needs improvement.""We needed to have help from the vendor for implementation. The vendor used two personnel. We have system administrators and they do the server backups themself."

More Acronis Cyber Protect Cons →

"The user interface could improve, it seems a bit out of date.""Veritas NetBackup has been in the backup and recovery market for quite a long time, but somehow, from my own observations and from feedback from end users, its user interface is lagging behind other comparable solutions such as Veeam.""The virtual environment, cloud integration, copy data management features need improvement.""Endpoint backup capability is needed.""It should be able to integrate with the cloud. If we leverage a cloud in the future for backup, there should be very fast help and more options for customers to choose from.""The solution could improve by having a feature to backup iSeries workloads.""Updates were not always consistent.""It's not a user-friendly solution. It's a little bit complicated. The UI is not very friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Doing what this is capable of doing, the cost of it is in line."
  • "Pricing is what it is. I don't shop around once I find a good solution. I insist they maintain ongoing support year after year for updates and tech support."
  • "I would say that at the pricepoint that it's at, it's definitely worth the money."
  • "It has already paid off itself in the first few months that we implemented it."
  • "When it comes to elements like cost, I think it is the only backup solution which has perpetual licenses, whereby you buy the license once and for all."
  • "I like the pricing, and that it is easy to use and has performed well. "
  • "Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis."
  • "The pricing is comparable to the newest solution available on the market, Altaro."

  • "Licensing was very expensive and did not scale well if needed to move between license models."
  • "Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
  • "So far I can only say that the license structure could be looked at to be aligned as either capacity-based or traditional."
  • "If you have a complex environment with dozens of different servers and apps, I recommend you look for TB licensing."
  • "The software and license are very expensive."
  • "Pricing is pretty costly as compared to the other products but worth investing for the long term and high ROI."
  • "Acceptable if you need to implement it for larger environments, e.g. over 1000 clients. For smaller setups it might be too expensive."
  • "The licensing model is cost-prohibitive as you scale out."

    Hi Shashi,

NetBackup is an enterprise tool and Acronis is for private/small companies (in my opinion).

If you have a plan for ~150 servers then Acronis is a NO WAY for you (only if you have the time to prepare snapshots for each individual system one by one).

Technically NetBackup is a more reliable and comprehensive product as compare to Acronis.

NetBackup has integration with all major business products like MS SQL Server, MS Exchange Server, IBM, SAP, HANNA, Share point and Active Directory.

You can backup and restore full VM in NetBackup as well as BMR too for P2V.

Acronis has limited features in comparison with Netbackup.

Netbackup is a vast product. If you need any assistance you may drop a few lines and I will help you out.

What types of data sets will you be backing up? Also how much data total are we talking about?  Will you be backing up traditional (full/Incremental)?

Ok, I'm seeing that no one knows/mentioned what Acronis Cyber Protect is.

Acronis is not an image tool anymore but it's a complete data security product. It has anti-malware, ransomware protection, immutable storage option, cross hypervisor backup and disaster function, P2V, V2P V2V Universal restore capabilities and very good coverage of enterprise application support.

    Both are good backup tools.

I have a one-to-one comparison. But, if you want to use BMR I suggest you go with Acronis cyber Backup because Acronis is the best solution provider for image backup and recovery for different kinds of environments.

Acronis has good support for different kinds of storage and inline data deduplication. Built-in network management for lower bandwidth from clients to the server. Support any-to-any migration and a user-friendly web console.

Always talk to your solution provider about fulfilling your all requirements. Possibly, conduct PoC before your purchase, check partner support services and the roadmap of the product.

Always choose the solution which will serve your requirements for the next 5 years (or more) as per your hardware lifecycle.

if you need any help on a solution please DM me.

    Reviews from Real Users

Mahdi B., Solution Architect and IT Consultant at Merdasco - Rayan Merdas Data Processing, says, “Veritas integrates well with the cloud, all databases, all operating systems, all hardware, and all software. Veritas also has solid malware and ransomware protection features. From time to time, we face a new kind of attack, and Veritas has always proven to be the best protection solution for some of my customers. Our customers who have faced ransomware attacks were able to recover their data in less than one day without any stress. Veritas is ransomware resilient and because of its implementation, it is not dependent on the operating system to work. Most of the functions of the Veritas software are isolated from the operating system and it's not dependent on the operating systems involved. This is very important. When some of our operating systems are infected by a virus, Veritas still works perfectly and protects our data. This feature is very well implemented in Veritas NetBackup.”

A PeerSpot user who is a General Manager at a comms service provider relates, “Veritas enterprise has many agents who perform the backup, whether it is a consistent backup or recorded backup. The solution has everything from the snapshot to the multiple database agents.”

Mir-Ali, Infrastructure Manager - Oracle SCM at a financial services firm, shares, “It covers all kinds of different architectures. Plus, it's very user-friendly and it is very reliable. Reliability is the most important thing because once the backup is done, if it is successful, then we're sure that it was successful and we will be able to restore it.”
