Lets us control all the traffic data and analyze it; warns us about any device with malware
Pros and Cons
- "It prevents us from being hacked and delivers information about who and where the attack came from."
- "Managed centrally over the web: You can manages all your Meraki devices in a single account."
- "Site to Site VPN: The device can establish a VPN connection to multiple sites in a mesh environment in seconds, and without complex VPN knowledge."
- "Traffic Shaping: The device lets you decide how you want to use your internet services. Due to the fact that Meraki can accept dual WAN, you can decide the way you balance the data traffic."
- "It would be great if the Meraki devices let us see, in real time, the internet demand on a single device."
- "The only stability issue is in Content Filtering. Sometimes we need to report these types of issues to Cisco support."
How has it helped my organization?
Meraki lets us control all the traffic data and analyze it. The Traffic Shaping lets us install voice servers and give quality of service. It prevents us from being hacked and delivers information about who and where the attack came from.
What is most valuable?
- Managed centrally over the web: You can manages all your Meraki devices in a single account.
- Site to Site VPN: The device can establish a VPN connection to multiple sites in a mesh environment in seconds, and without complex VPN knowledge.
- Traffic Shaping: The device lets you decide how you want to use your internet services. Due to the fact that Meraki can accept dual WAN, you can decide the way you balance the data traffic.
- Content Filtering: Excellent, and very easy to use. You can establish rules over specific content, what is allowed to be used, and assign them to a single device or a group.
- Intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS): The best feature. It can detect malware, even a virus, and warn you by email about the device that has it. When the Meraki detects that something is wrong, it automatically blocks the connection or the intrusion, delivering a graphic report with all the necessary content.
What needs improvement?
It would be great if the Meraki devices let us see, in real time, the internet demand on a single device.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The only stability issue is in Content Filtering. Sometimes we need to report these types of issues to Cisco support.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
You need to change the device based on information that Cisco provides. If you overload the Meraki throughput, it is time to change the device.
How are customer service and technical support?
Excellent.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Fortinet. We switched to Meraki because it lets you see what's happening in your LAN and WAN in a graphic and web environment. Our customers are very grateful because we let them log in to the Meraki and let them see their network activity.
How was the initial setup?
You only need to know about firewalls, content filtering, and networking.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is more expensive than other solutions, but it is a cloud-managed network solution and support is given at the moment you call. That give a very big plus.
The Meraki UTM is excellent when you buy the Advanced Security license. If you buy a different license you lost all the valuable functions.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Fortinet, Barracuda, and other open source solutions.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

All devices are accessible from one place with the administrator panel
Pros and Cons
- "Easy to administer and saves time when you have many smaller locations that you have to manage."
What is our primary use case?
Using it as an endpoint firewall on different locations. We used different MX devices to setup a VPN from off-site locations to our main office. It is a firewall for dummies. Almost sets itself up.
How has it helped my organization?
Minimal fuss. Stable and fast enough. Easy to administer and saves time when you have many smaller locations that you have to manage.
What is most valuable?
Auto-setup VPN between locations and the simple "cloud-panel" to administer all devices with an elegant overview, all from one place.
What needs improvement?
It can always improve pricewise regarding throughput.
For how long have I used the solution?
Less than one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
No.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No.
How are customer service and technical support?
Have not contacted customer service/technical support yet.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Smaller devices: SonicWall, ZyXel, etc.
We switched to get the Auto VPN function and the brilliant administrator panel, where all devices are accessible from one place.
How was the initial setup?
Initial setup was straightforward and extremely easy.
What about the implementation team?
No need for a vendor team to implement. Used in-house expertise.
What was our ROI?
Not measured.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
You get what you pay for.
With this device, "anybody" can set it up. Should keep IT man hours to a minimum.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Did not really evaluate other solutions as this was a side project to our "main" firewalls. At the time, we did some research on the Internet and did not really find anything comparable to Meraki.
What other advice do I have?
The solution is simple, fast to set up, and brilliant for its use.

Cloud Networking at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Users can manage and troubleshoot from anywhere
What is most valuable?
Cloud IT Management is the technology of the future, which is most valuable because:
- Users can manage and troubleshoot from anywhere.
- It's easy to set up, configure, and manage.
- It provides superior security.
- Interconnected management unlocks new possibilities.
- Lower TCO (total cost of ownership).
How has it helped my organization?
- Easy and simple to deploy for new branch
- Easy and simple to troubleshoot from anywhere
- We are better secured
- Good warranty
What needs improvement?
It can be improved in many areas, because it has many proprietary models for many different areas.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution since 2009.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Yes, I have encountered some issues in the past.
How are customer service and technical support?
I usually contact technical support for advice. The technical support team is very good. We can send them an email or call them directly.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Some older solutions which we had before, we converted to this solution and used old technology that was difficult to control.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was simple.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing Meraki MX Firewalls, I had some other options: Fortinet FortiGate and Cisco ASA.

Network Systems Administrator at a non-tech company with 51-200 employees
Features we most use are the SD-WAN and auto failover for dual ISP connections. Seem to work in harsh environments very well.
What is most valuable?
The features we see and use the most are the SD-WAN, auto failover for dual ISP connections, auto failover for our VPN connections and the bandwidth monitoring are the main features. Alerting and monitoring are the next feature we see as being very beneficial.
How has it helped my organization?
As the only network admin in the company, I have to monitor nine remote sites (production and shipping facilities) and 12 remote VPN connections from various smaller facilities. Each location is a processing facility, which, when in season, runs 24 x 7 for the duration they are in production. During this time frame, not having a tech support person on site to fix problems is a huge cost savings for us. I see problems usually before they are large enough to need someone on site and with the cloud services I can remotely control ports, firewall connections and equipment online. Meraki products are very solid and seem to work in harsh environments very well.
What needs improvement?
I do wish you could control some ports locally from a console, but this is not the case. The only thing you can control locally is the uplink ports.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Meraki network switches and firewalls for 3.5 years and they work very well.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We haven’t had any stability problems. These MX-64, MX-84 and MX-100 devices are very durable and seem to work well in harsh environments. Our environment is fresh vegetable processing and shipping warehouses with coolers.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not encountered any problems with scalability. We started with 1 Mx-64, migrated to MX-84, then straight up to 2x MX-100 in a high availability configuration. We started out with 100 devices and now we are 430 devices with dual Fiber WAN connections and it runs very smoothly. We currently just integrated a MS-425-32 port 10GB network switch and it works very well.
How are customer service and technical support?
We have had no technical support problems that could not be resolved, between our Meraki rep and their tech support services. Being available 24 hours it's very nice to have that kind of service and support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used to be an HPE shop. I pulled out all that equipment, and installed Meraki switches and firewalls. It’s been so nice. I have visibility into the network, as well as remote links.
How was the initial setup?
Like any new equipment or networking gear, it did take a bit of time to learn the ins and outs and limitations of the Meraki gear. It’s not the Cisco CLI console that I was used to, so it was different to learn.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Well, you get what you pay for. If you want good products that work well and are easy to configure, as well as remote control, you have to weigh the pricing options. Is it worth the extra few bucks? I think so. Meraki comes with a limited lifetime warranty and they will replace the failed unit overnight if one fails.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We tried several other firewalls, such as SonicWall NSA, Cisco ASA, pfSense, Juniper, and Untangled. We found the Meraki firewalls to be the best fit.
What other advice do I have?
Make sure you have your network planned out, mapped out and you can see exactly where you need the devices installed. Get a Meraki rep to assist you in the device selection and implementation. Also, try before you buy.

Managing Partner, Sr. Solutions Architect, Speaker, Courseware Developer, Technical Trainer at a tech services company
It's self managed and saves a bunch of time and effort.
What is most valuable?
AutoVPN features allow you extremely simple mesh or site to site IPSEC VPN tunnels with no configuration. It's self managed and saves a bunch of time and effort.
Setup and configuration is cloud controller based so you just setup anything you need and don't actually have to configure the device other than to ship it to where it's going, and it configures itself with the settings you used without needing to hit the local LAN interface.
How has it helped my organization?
Setup and configuration could not be quicker. Their support is also unlimited, you call, you get a person who knows what they're doing and they always solve the problem.
What needs improvement?
There are a few things that are odd that I can do with other firewall products that I can't do with a Meraki. Such as - wanting to setup two firewalls in front of the same protected subnet. Since they 'act' like one when they are added, it won't let you setup the firwall in the traditional way where it's on the same LAN and has a proper public IP. When you attempt to save, because of their oversimplification of firewalls, it complains that you already have a firewall in front of that subnet. The only choice the leave you is to match the exact firewall and use their built in high availability. I don't want to do that in this case because I was intentionally terminating certain VPN tunnels on one, and other tunnels on the other. I could do this with an ASA, CheckPoint, SonicWALL, or Fortinet, but not here.
For how long have I used the solution?
About 2 or 3 years and across 80 plus sites.
How is customer service and technical support?
Tech support is California based today. Good in most cases, but they have no power in true design change requests. Some things they don't have in the interface are only viewable by Meraki.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Not at all just make sure you using a proper model for your environment, as you don't want to overload the firewall.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
If you are overloading the firewall, you need to buy the next model as there is no upgrade path.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
It's brilliant, 10/10 - you can open case online, or call them and you will be talking directly to the tech, who has access to your environment.
Technical Support:10/10.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used Checkpoint, Cisco ASA, Palo Altos, Juniper. To configure the devices you need days, to spin up Meraki Firewall you need minutes.
How was the initial setup?
It's very simple.
What about the implementation team?
We did it in house, across five offices and the data center.
What was our ROI?
It saves time on spinning up new offices, and on managing the firewall.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Juniper switches.
What other advice do I have?
I will never go back to any other solution. Right now our corporate network, across the five offices and the data center, is 100% Meraki, Meraki Firewalls, Meraki Switches, and Meraki APs.
