Have faced limitations due to high costs but have maintained reliability over time
The primary issue is the pricing, which is very expensive for my company's budget. We cannot afford to pay such a large fee. We are not Microsoft or BMW; we are a small company. As a small company, I have no power to negotiate directly with VMware. Perhaps larger companies have more opportunity to contract directly with VMware, but I do not have that leverage. The only path I can follow is to change solutions. Net.spA is a company working in the field of waste management. We are not a technological company, so we do not have a large margin to justify purchasing and maintaining the VMware infrastructure at current costs.

Key benefits include the ability to identify resource usage and hot spots.
I have been using Operations Manager for the last few months since reviewing my licence structure and procuring the Enterprise Plus, management bundle. Having a number of distributed vSphere environments spread across the UK and Europe has presented a number of challenges in terms of centralised alerting and reporting. With my collections all configured I am now able to receive invaluable information quickly - reducing the labour that was previously causing issues. Key benefits:- * Ability to identify resource usage and hot spots * Understand where I can reclaim resources * Trend and forecast my virtual landscape by adding projects

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Like most organizations, our training budgets are tight. Without an intuitive product like vROps, we wouldn't be able to get the insight that we do into our environment on a day-to-day basis."
"The blueprint catalog and interface are easy to use when you log in."
"It definitely has a better view and visibility for everything that's going on, and helps keep tabs and makes sure everything is running well."
"It is useful for making decisions and troubleshooting issues, and I think it is the most powerful option on the market."
"Can be customized according to customer requirements."
"We have a full 100% virtualization and we're using SolarWinds, but I needed VMware monitoring and vROps was the obvious solution; once I realized that we already had the licensing for it, being able to install it and configure it within a few days was incredible."
"It can save the organization money if you're using it right."
"It gives us the ability to look into problems which are happening within the environment, helping us mitigate those problems more quickly and see where the issue is coming from, as well as what other systems or components could be affected."
"This is our lifeblood, our ability to be pro-active instead of retroactive, and without it, it hurts our bottom line."
"Thanks guys – you managed to turn around an extremely frustrating experience into something more positive."
"I found the ease of use with Operations Manager Dashboard and providing complete visibility of your infrastructure most valuable."
"With my collections all configured I am now able to receive invaluable information quickly, reducing the labour that was previously causing issues."

Cons

"We're on the 6.0 version, so it does lack a little bit of that intuitiveness. You have to have some experience with VMware to get around inside of it."
"When it finds a problem, the product currently provides certain solutions for you to implement to resolve the problem; it might be nice to have a trigger that would actually implement that solution directly into the VMware or into the VM itself."
"Adding and configuring add-ons is not straightforward."
"The customization of reports isn't as great as I would like to see it. There are some canned ones."
"The tool should have an easy workflow with some guided steps to make it simpler from the customer's perspective."
"In a previous version, you could click on a cluster to see a lot of information about efficiency, e.g., when you will run out of memory, CPU usage, and RAM in percentages. In newer versions, you see this information in megahertz and kilobytes, not percentage. I don't like this change so much. If you need to present information to your boss or Director of IT, the information would be better with a percentage. Now, you have only a big number and don't know the percentage of use that you are getting from the VMs. I don't know why they changed it, but I liked the percentage version more than getting the numbers for megahertz of memory. Also, kilobytes of memory is a very large number. For a simple view, gigabytes or terabytes is better."
"The automation piece could be done simpler."
"There's none that I can think of, but I don't think I've used it enough to offer an opinion."
"I would like the reporting function to be made more complete."
"I would like to see the vrealize Suite support the Mcrosoft Azure"
"It has color coding to an extent, but it needs more colors to tag more diversely."
"It’s hardly the most streamlined deployment experience is it? It’s ironic that an application designed to orchestrate operations can’t orchestrate its installation a bit better!"

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is a little bit expensive. Licensing is an issue because there are always changes, and by that I mean cost increases. And that's not only for vROps but for VMware, vSphere, and all the products that are involved."
"vROps is a bit expensive and that's a reason that small clients say, 'No, I don't think we need this.' From a pricing perspective, it is quite steep. But 'expensive' is relative, depending on what you need. Others might say, 'It is expensive, but I think we can use it to better our environment.'"
"The predictive analysis of the infrastructure helps our customers to reduce downtime and improve capacity planning. Issues are fixed faster with vROps."
"There has been a bit of cost savings in that we could decide to move workloads around a bit better."
"Cost is an issue on vROps. The Standard edition, for an organization our size, is just not useful at all. However, I like the price point of vROps Standard. But as a company, the Advanced is the minimum version that we can use, because we need the customization, we need a lot of the features that Advanced brings. But the price is substantially higher than Standard. It's always been a challenge to try to go in to my leadership and say, "Here's what I want." I've always got to go back and super-justify it and it's not an easy win. Whereas, if the pricing were closer to the Standard model, or maybe even a little bit above that, it's an easier conversation with leadership. But because it really feels like more than double the price, I'm not sure the value, double the money, is there, as an easy-sell to my leadership."
"We did an enterprise license agreement with our VMware partner and put this in our bundle. We tried it and loved it, so we use it now."
"If you compare the prices of VMware and the cloud solutions along with the components that you may use, I feel that it may be costly."
"Every VMware product is a licensing challenge. It's always costly. It's based on processors. From a technical side, the product is very good. The challenging part is always the licensing. They should have some kind of alternate pricing models."
