You can easily scale it for high message rates, but it's primarily a flow-monitoring tool rather than an APM.
Autopilot is a middleware-centric business transaction monitoring tool that includes a Complex Event Processor (CEP) for transaction data. Architecture AutoPilot Probes are lightweight performance measurement and monitoring tools for live applications that are executed at defined points within the…

Real-time monitoring has improved our banking API performance and supports detailed business transaction analysis
The real-time monitoring is what we can see for anything that is needed in terms of CPU, memory, or the connections or the sessions related. It's real-time monitoring of performance of each of the components, which is what we need and use all the time. It's highly effective, I would say. Infrastructure visibility, transaction monitoring, to check the actual user experience in terms of the response time, MRT and all those things. We do the component monitoring like the API performance and the connections and all those things, but we also do the business process monitoring and business transaction monitoring.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Very simple to use and is a very useful tool."
"Flexible environment"
"You can easily scale it for high message rates."
"Nastel is a world-class company that has partnership amongst other positive qualities embedded into its cultural fiber."
"The transaction snapshots are the most valuable feature of AppDynamics"
"This APM tool has helped our organization to find problems before customers find them."
"The main thing is that you can use the tool to visually see the transactions happening; figure out the bottlenecks quickly; and the ability to drill down from a high level and go down to the details and figure out where bottlenecks are."
"Capacity planning is, in my opinion, the most useful."
"AppDynamics includes a service application map of the call load, response, environment health index, and transactions that are dynamically rated on one easy-to-use page."
"The product has the ability to drill down to the errors whenever we have issues."
"We set up alerts recently so we can fix any issues more quickly in production."
"Autodiscovery of application topology, based on real user traffic."

Cons

"Documentation"
"The GUI is quite basic and middleware-centric."
"Quality Assurance testing for new releases need to be more thorough"
"Needs to quickly implement support for all variety of servers."
"Splunk AppDynamics could improve their installation process, which would be an incredible thing on Splunk AppDynamics' side."
"I think AppDynamics is not really there yet. The scalability should be very easy."
"An area with room for improvement is the ease of managing the agents within our systems."
"It is slightly higher on the pricing front, but it is very reliable."
"There are certain limitations with the agents in the solution"
"At this time, we don't have much visibility on the virtual environment, monitoring, and all other things."
"The AppDynamics installation process needs to be more straightforward. Deploying the product is also tricky."
"Actually, it still takes some time when I want to find some requests in time ranges. It's a little slow."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It is a more expensive APM among the competitors, which is fine because it also does a lot more on the auto-detection and the AI side... It is not a cheap product. None of them are. The price is fair, but I could use it on more projects if they had a lower price."
"AppDynamics is more expensive than competitors."
"AppDynamics is what I would consider an enterprise-level solution. This means that it's a solution that is intended for use by larger organizations, while small or medium-sized businesses may find it difficult to afford. The number of agents required will also impact the pricing, and smaller companies may only be able to afford a limited number of agents. Essentially, the cost of the solution is not within the reach of every organization, and only some may be able to afford it."
"The tool is expensive."
"This solution is not the cheapest but it works well. You will end up doing more work with a cheaper solution than if you just spent the extra money on a better solution like this one."
"The pricing of the solution is reasonable for what features you receive."
"One of the main downsides to the solution is its cost."
"I believe there was probably an extra charge whenever I wanted to contact the support team."

The price is not cheap, however, considering the benefits and the price ratio, I would rate it nine out of ten.
