Useful for resource and financial management but needs to change Oracle database
The solution helps with tech management. It has a work plan similar to Microsoft Project for tracking progress anywhere. It can synchronize with Microsoft Projects for updating and rebooting tasks. They can also assign tasks to team members who can update progress using timesheets without a sheet. It includes a Project dashboard for managing multiple projects simultaneously and program management for overseeing groups of projects. It offers various data metrics. It has project entities for controlling risks, issues, and protections. It can calculate costs based on resource tasks and compare actual and planned costs. The tool has features for scenario comparison, allowing us to optimize scenarios based on various factors. Additionally, we can manually optimize by managing resource availability, creating staffing profiles, and making payments to optimize in any situation.

A solution that gives you all the information you need to plan detailed projects
The initial setup was just a little complex. I rate the initial setup a seven out of ten. Deploying the solution took two weeks. While deploying the solution, we had two instances, one for the IT team and one for the business team. And we had to connect the two and explain things to the team. Only two people were needed to deploy the solution, me and another person.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like the automated calculations, especially on the resource side. When project managers enter their resource requirements into their staffing profiles, they are automatically translated into labor forecast calculations. PPM automates a significant portion of the forecast calculations. Timesheets are also built-in. We automatically process time sheets and bill them accordingly."
"Has a powerful workflow engine that allows creation of workflow complexities and processes."
"Micro Focus PPM is flexible and easy to use. It's simple to customize and configure workflows."
"There are so many different pieces of functionality, and we use almost every single piece from deployment to demand, project, resource, and time management."
"It's a very detailed tool. As far as an enterprise is concerned, it gives you the flexibility to manage everything: portfolios, projects, finances, proposals, resources, and time... It takes care of even the minor details that need to be captured. The project management functionality is configured really well within the tool. That stands out."
"The portfolio management and the resource management are the key features."
"I like the ease of customization from an admin perspective. I'm really excited about some of the things that are coming in version 10.0.3 as far as what admins are able to do."
"Overall, they have a very strong workflow management capability. That's a very strong feature because then you can model any process easily. Whether it is a demand management process, a pipeline management process, or your project delivery methodology, it is much easier because of their workflow management capability."
"The most valuable features are scheduling, resource management, and, from a project perspective, the functions like issues that change orders. They are valuable because, from a project management perspective, we use the workflows that we build for project management and do active risk management and issue management for the projects that we want for our agencies."
"The data is the most valuable because the reporting that we provide out of Planview is priceless when compared to any other tool. The reporting has a variety of reports. It has the capabilities of Power BI. It gives us all these dashboards that we can show to our executive leadership, and they have been very well-received."
"The integration stuff from tool to tool, like Projectplace to Planview, to manage projects is the most valuable feature. It keeps all our tasks up-to-date. It closely follows up with everything, which is really cool."
"Enterprise One provides a variety of types of resource assignments for assigning work to people. It's very easy and straightforward to configure these assignments. Planview allows us to see the entire workforce. We can see where our skill sets of people are, what they're working on, and allows us to make informed business decisions based on priority."
"With the lifecycles, it helps us step through our processes easier. We'll take a process and create it in Visio, then we'll go and implemented in Planview. Anytime that we have to do a new process, this is what we use. We just step it through the lifecycles and the configure screens are very easy to use. The fields that you need are easy to use."
"The biggest impact has been the visibility into our IT assets."
"We do a lot of big projects which are pretty expensive to structure the product development around and see the progress. Every time we start a project, we have to expense the spends for certain amounts. We need some baselines, like predictive versus actual."
"Planview has helped connect funding and strategic outcomes with work execution. That is the key use that we have for it. We use it to validate the work that we're doing and the funding that we need. The difference between the previous version and current version for us would be the ICPM and the way it gives us different scenarios. We can go in and build that out."

Cons

"I was not involved in the initial setup. I know that the project involved a lot of consulting that took a long time."
"The solution can sometimes be a little inflexible and a bit caustic."
"We had a couple of issues with stability or performance degradation about a year ago, around the time of the initial rollout. Since then, we've only had two unexpected outages that were quickly resolved."
"The user experience of the product needs to be improved"
"Currently, HPE PPM does not allow “Project” approval, but only simple “Demand Request” approval (mobility)."
"I would also like to see improvement in PPM's reporting and alerts. PPM has reporting capabilities, including HTML reports and portlets. But a majority of clients will build their own reporting platforms, or they will use external reporting platforms like Tableau and QlikView."
"OpenText Project and Portfolio Management should move their database from Oracle."
"They can make its UI better. Currently, the UI is a bit clunky."
"I would like a bit more flexibility, as far as the configuration, and have additional capabilities to configure, making it more flexible for our use."
"There can be improvement on the sense of urgency because a lot of times we've exhausted everything that we can, and now, we're reaching out. So, it isn't a, "Well, have you tried to reboot this?" We've already done everything. Once we put in a ticket, there should be more of a sense of urgency on it."
"Configuring the UI in the content management system is too elaborate and too time-consuming."
"While Planview Management provides robust reporting and analytics capabilities, further enhancements could include more advanced data visualization options, predictive analytics features, and customizable dashboards to provide deeper insights into project performance and trends."
"When it comes to reporting there are some challenges with integration."
"I would like to be able to integrate with Oracle to supplement what we're currently doing with reporting."
"Our version is definitely set up a bit more waterfall world. It would be better if some of the agile features were more in the standard product."
"Even though Enterprise One is easy and user-friendly, it could provide better training like a demo. Providing more tutorials or sessions would really help."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is SaaS without a base fee."
"Now, we also received an increase in the support license prices, without any advanced notice. At this point, switching to unify all our licensing under HPE and customer support has been poor."
"There is an additional cost for product support"
"Support and license management are two hurdles for us. Every time we purchase new licenses, it has taken us half a year to implement those."
"A large organization will find Micro Focus PPM affordable, but it may be a bit costly for a small or medium-sized company. The license is based on the number of users."
"We have an annual license, and it is fairly priced in comparison to that of other solutions."
"HPE PPM SaaS model is comprehensive, however, the base fee component has customer resistance to its recurring setup,"
"Our licensing fees are approximately $50,000 USD annually."
"With the costs, they were very understanding. Knowing that we were an existing customer, they were very much willing to work with us to make sure that we were able to transition to Enterprise One from PPM Pro."
"When we went through that process, I believe it is competitive with others on the market. However, there are less expensive options available. It's a more premium offering at a higher price."
"We are on the Flex licenses."
"I don't think we have necessarily purchased everything that I would have liked to have seen."
"We have unlimited licenses for all of our functionalities. Since we went global, we went with that model."
"We have several hundred licenses. It costs us several hundred thousand dollars a year."
"I don't know about the actual pricing. I have not come across any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
