Supports a wide variety of packages with robust security features but needs tighter cloud integration
The best features of JFrog Artifactory include the core functionality of package management and software management, along with scanning capabilities to prevent vulnerabilities from being introduced. The metadata management feature was particularly useful for managing packages within JFrog Artifactory. We utilized Xray integration with JFrog Artifactory, which was instrumental in managing vulnerabilities overall. JFrog Artifactory has robust functionality in terms of access control, which helped us ensure minimal access to various artifacts. I would rate it eight out of ten because it is a great product that is widely used in the industry. It has excellent features from an artifact management perspective and maintains good integrations.

Automation of cloud infrastructure has transformed how our team manages Terraform workflows
Spacelift has other features beyond Terraform, including Ansible, Pulumi, Terragrunt, and it also helps with Kubernetes, although we haven't used it for the other tools. We have only used it for Terraform Infrastructure as Code, and it has helped us significantly. One standout feature compared to Terraform Cloud is the ability to apply policies. For example, we want to restrict engineers in our team from building servers with a particular SKU, such as in Azure, where we do not want to run servers with a SKU higher than the standard D4sv5. We can apply those policies in Spacelift, and the RBAC and access policies features are really excellent in Spacelift, which we do not find in any of the other competitor tools. The pricing is also competitive compared to Terraform Cloud. The access policy features allow us to assign specific policies since we have three environments in our company: Dev, QA, and Prod. We assign policies so that anyone can run code from Dev and QA servers, but we assign a policy for specific people, such as managers, to run code in Prod. This is a very good feature from Spacelift that we have implemented for the access policy. Spacelift has positively impacted our organization as a CI/CD tool for application deployment and development. Although we use other CI/CD tools like Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions, there wasn't a specific tool for Terraform Infrastructure as Code until Spacelift came along. It allows us to easily configure our servers and build a number of them on our cloud. While other CI/CD tools have started to include configuration features, Spacelift offers many other benefits that make it an excellent tool to use.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"HPE was using it for a lot of things, and they certainly had a massive implementation."
"For the most part, it's pretty stable."
"JFrog Artifactory has helped us scale faster and is a highly available, robust artifact repository that boosts our confidence in production."
"JFrog Artifactory has definitely impacted our organization in a positive manner, as approximately 20,000 people or 20,000 pipelines use it on a day-to-day basis and most of the time it saves time because it is very fast, with tools, services, and features that are really brilliant and no other tool can match."
"The core functionality is most valuable for indexing and metadata of all the artifacts, but within the last year or two, we've been using the Projects feature, which has been very helpful. We can now assign individual admins for different projects and repos so that they can self-manage their own user permissions for their data. My IT DevOps team doesn't have to be the facilitators of that. It's now more of a self-service capability for them."
"JFrog Artifactory has positively impacted my organization by centralizing artifact management and improving consistency across builds."
"The package registries have been helpful. GitLab, our previous solution, wasn't managing that well."
"As for specific outcomes about the positive impact from expanding to four or five verticals, we have achieved faster deployment speeds, faster time to market, and lower pipeline failure rates."
"SpaceLift has positively impacted my organization by reducing a lot of confusion with the integration of Terraform modules, because a lot of our tooling involved direct and indirect Terraform module creations; now it is more streamlined for each and every resource that we control."
"After using Spacelift, I noticed a 90% reduction in time saved for repetitive infrastructure tasks, as the cloud configuration speed has doubled."
"Spacelift has positively impacted my organization by making it very easy to manage the different modules with a very clear interface."
"If you're looking to automate your Infrastructure as Code, then Spacelift is the best choice."
"Spacelift impacted our organization positively in several areas, with time-saving by eliminating the need for coordination runs, a 60 to 70% reduction in infrastructure-related incidents, and a significant drop in weekly deployment coordination from six to eight hours to roughly two hours, freeing up meaningful time for actual feature work and improvements."
"I appreciate that I just have to connect to my AWS account with my credentials, and Spacelift handles the rest."
"A valuable feature of Spacelift is that you can attach labels, and it is a modernized tool for infrastructure deployments. It is pull request-based, and you can see all the Terraform plan and apply logs on the pull request itself, which is not available across any other CI/CD tools."
"Spacelift has positively impacted my organization because it works well; it allows everybody to collaborate in the same Terraform repo without stepping on each other's toes."

Cons

"The latest version that I am using is 7.41. It has been upgraded graphics-wise, but there is a bit of slowness. They can improve the graphical interface for the admin jobs and make it faster."
"JFrog could improve this product with tighter integration capabilities."
"JFrog Artifactory could be improved for simpler workflows without dedicated infra teams or dedicated DevOps, as it could be difficult to configure."
"Although JQL is a great tool, I have noticed that JQL queries can be hard to learn."
"Looking back, I think the learning curve for JFrog Artifactory could be eased, and the installation process could feel less overwhelming."
"It's an enterprise product that acts like an enterprise product. In other words, it's not a product where they focus on user experience."
"However, because of the sheer size and magnitude of artifacts that end up getting stored on JFrog Artifactory, the tool tends to be bogged down and most of the functions also get bottlenecked because of that."
"Maybe around user experience, I think one improvement could be the UX, which shows its age, as it has not changed for a bit, but other than that, it is fine."
"Pricing could be a little lower to make it a very robust tool, and it can improve areas in scalability and integrate some open-source tools."
"Spacelift could be improved by implementing some of the many AI-based tools available that support a variety of tools like Pulumi, CloudFormation, OpenTofu, and Terraform."
"I think an improvement for Spacelift would be a feature to run multiple stacks."
"I chose a rating of six out of ten because I think multiple other tools similar to Spacelift exist, for example, many automation tools such as Jenkins or other cloud-native tools that perform efficiently compared to Spacelift."
"Spacelift currently lacks features that can help with complex type deployments and coordination for major deployments."
"If you are a small enterprise organization, below 500 people, I would not recommend it."
"In the free version, there's no straightforward way to be notified once a deployment is finished."
"I specifically wish to see improvements in Spacelift's user interface, making it more useful and easier for the team to understand."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I am not aware of its cost, but it is worth investing in this. My guess is that its price is not much because we generally prefer open-source solutions, and if we are investing, we don't go for expensive ones. Our selection is based on the market demand and needs, and we invest only if something is worth the cost."
"It is a bit expensive. It could be a little bit lower or have an a la carte option because, in our case, we had to go to the next version of Enterprise X because we needed one feature, which was more than three projects. We don't need all the other capabilities, but we're paying for all those. It's almost twice the cost of the previous version. So, it would be nice to have something along those lines."
"It is a bit expensive product."
