Nmap and IBM SevOne NPM compete in the network tool category. IBM SevOne NPM appears to have the upper hand with its advanced features for comprehensive network management.
Features: Nmap offers scanning capabilities, detection of network devices, and services, along with security auditing and vulnerability detection features. IBM SevOne NPM provides performance monitoring, scalable architecture, and detailed analytics for large network environments.
Room for Improvement: Nmap could improve its interface to be more user-friendly, integrate more automation options, and expand its reporting features. IBM SevOne NPM could enhance its pricing model to be more accessible, streamline its deployment process, and offer more customizable reporting options.
Ease of Deployment and Customer Service: IBM SevOne NPM offers a structured deployment process and reliable customer support, ideal for complex IT setups. Nmap's ease of deployment suits users with technical skills seeking hands-on control, with less emphasis on customer service reliance.
Pricing and ROI: Nmap's open-source nature leads to minimal setup costs, providing a high ROI for small networks and individual projects. IBM SevOne NPM, while requiring significant initial investment, offers extensive monitoring capabilities, potentially yielding higher ROI for enterprises needing detailed insights.

Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a free and open source (license) utility for network discovery and security auditing. Many systems and network administrators also find it useful for tasks such as network inventory, managing service upgrade schedules, and monitoring host or service uptime. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS versions) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, but works fine against single hosts. Nmap runs on all major computer operating systems, and official binary packages are available for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. In addition to the classic command-line Nmap executable, the Nmap suite includes an advanced GUI and results viewer (Zenmap), a flexible data transfer, redirection, and debugging tool (Ncat), a utility for comparing scan results (Ndiff), and a packet generation and response analysis tool (Nping).
