Near-zero downtime has protected critical workloads and now simplifies hybrid cloud recovery
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are mainly very sophisticated and relevant to the current market. The data protection CDP part has real-time replication, unlike other solutions that have snapshot backups. We can set it up hourly, making it ideal for use with workloads. Another attraction is the near-zero RTO, with automated failover within minutes and one-click failover and failback. Currently, we are using a hybrid cloud solution, and HPE Zerto Software supports multi-cloud environments, making it easy to migrate between on-premises and cloud. Regarding the impact of HPE Zerto Software on our RTOs, we have near-zero RTO, meaning the system must be back online within thirty minutes if we measure the time. It is very quick to recover services. With HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication, we have some CDP protection, so we typically write interceptions along with some asynchronous replication. There is almost real-time replication available.

Enables to migrate the infrastructure and change the hypervisor without any downtime
We can migrate our infrastructure while it is running in production. We can change the hypervisor without any downtime. The product is fully automated. We select a machine we want to move, and the system copies everything in the background and informs us when the machine is ready to move. When we click to move, the product will shut down the machine on vCenter and turn it on on Nutanix. It is 100% automated. The process can be done in the background without any downtime. The time it takes the machine to boot is the only downtime we experience. Generally, a 1TB machine might take two to three hours to move from one hypervisor to another. With Nutanix Move, we can move the machine within seconds. Everything is done while the service is available.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The replication feature and DR functionality are most valuable. Zerto has many options when a new server is being provisioned."
"My impressions of HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication are excellent, as we typically see targets under five seconds, which no one else is achieving."
"The other thing that is impressive is that you really can bring up a virtual machine almost immediately."
"I assess the stability and reliability of the HPE Zerto Software as very robust, with no real performance issues experienced; it just works and is easy to use."
"Without Zerto, we would have been in serious trouble, so it definitely returned the investment many times over."
"In situations of failback or moving workloads, it saves us hours. If I were to have to move a four or five terabyte machine using something like VMware's virtual copy it has to install on the machine and copy the data over. Then it has to shut the machine down and do a final copy, which means there's a lot of downtime while it's doing the final copy."
"The Move feature is the most valuable feature because it allows us to move the VM from our old environment to our new environment with minimal disruption."
"We have been able to implement a DRaaS product based on Zerto Virtual Replication, and we have helped several customers implement their Disaster Recovery Plans more easily than before, thanks to the independence of hardware that the product provides."
"The most valuable feature of Nutanix Move is how simple it is and the benefit of what it does."
"The automated migration feature is the most effective. It automates the whole process, like installation from VMware to Nutanix AHV cluster. It retains the IP and MAC addresses of VMs and cleans up migrated VMs by removing VMware tools from the source. The automated migration is seamless - when we do the cutover, Nutanix Move powers off the source VM and automatically powers on the virtual machine on the Nutanix cluster."
"We can change the hypervisor without any downtime."
"The product's initial setup phase is straightforward."
"The most valuable feature of Nutanix Move is its simplicity."
"The easy migration is the most valuable feature."
"It is easy to set up the solution."
"The solution is stable."

Cons

"Over my eight years working with HPE Zerto Software, I have experienced some downtime and crashes during upgrades."
"There are quite a few elements in the long-term retention areas that I wish were better. The bio-level recovery indexing of backups is the area I struggle with the most. That's probably because I desire to do tasks that ordinary users wouldn't do with the solution. The standard medium to large customer would probably never ask for anything like I ask for, so I think it's pretty good the way it is. I'm excited to see some of the new improvements coming in the 9.5 version. Some of the streamlines and how the product presents itself for some of the recovery features could be better."
"Zerto was acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise and it shows with their level-one guys. They're not as vested in the product."
"It works only for a virtual platform, it does not support bare metal."
"While going in, we were looking at the backup tool so that we had a DR tool and a backup tool, but they stopped developing their backup solution built into it. That was a bummer for us, so now, we have a DR solution, and we have a backup solution."
"There are certain things about the user interface that could be a little bit more user-friendly."
"If I have to reboot a virtual machine host, I have issues with Zerto catching up afterward."
"Zerto can improve by offering bare metal recovery for our physical infrastructure."
"The most valuable feature is the automation. The solution will clone the data that you want to migrate, shut down the virtual machine, disconnect it from the network and start the clone virtual machine inside the solution's platform."
"We cannot use the solution to move a machine from Nutanix to other hypervisors."
"When you have regular questions, like how do I do something in the tool or when you want to know when can I do anything in the product, the solution's support team can take around three to four days to give you an answer, or they may even sometimes take more time."
"I think Nutanix Move could be improved by adding a way to retry failed migrations. Sometimes when seeding fails, there's no way to redo it without recreating the whole migration plan. I'd like a button to restart the process without creating a migration plan."
"We'd like Nutanix to be more flexible in the future."
"We can migrate from Hyper-V to Acropolis, but we can't move from Acropolis back to Hyper-V. However, we do not have customers who want to, but if we could reassure them that it was possible it would be better. Having our Hyper-V customers have a two-way option that may help. A customer would like to hear that if they do switch they can switch back. I know it's a limitation on Hyper-V but not a limitation on VMware."
"We can migrate from Hyper-V to Acropolis, but we can't move from Acropolis back to Hyper-V."
"They should have some tools to migrate the workload from another Nutanix platform."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"While we find the twenty-five VM license somewhat inflexible, the actual setup costs are minimal as the product is so easy to install."
"Zerto does a per-workload licensing model, per-server. It is simple and straightforward, but it is not super flexible. It is kind of a one size fits all. They charge the same price for those workloads. I feel like they could have some flexible licensing option possibly based on criticality, just so we could protect less important work. I would love to protect every workload in my environment with Zerto, whether I really need it or not, but the cost is such that I really have to justify that protection. So, if we had some more flexibility, e.g., you could protect servers with a two-, three-, or four-hour RPO at a certain price point versus mission-critical every five minutes, then I would be interested in that."
"We paid a big investment upfront with renewal fees each year."
"Obviously, I wish it were cheaper and more affordable. But I get what I pay for, so I can't complain."
"When we purchased Zerto, we felt it was worth the cost as it would protect us from any potential problems and give us peace of mind knowing that any critical items could be recovered quickly."
"Zerto is very cost-effective. We get really great value for the cost of the service."
"Licensing is VM based so you can buy packages or single VM. Price is not low but the power of application is high, so you will get your money back."
"We found that in an event that was massive enough to cause an entire cluster to go offline we would be happy with our core services up and running."
"The tool is bundled as part of the Nutanix license."
"The solution is open-source."
"It is a free tool."
"The product is available for free."
