We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This was a great implementation for a small to mid-size business.""Quick setup, great support, stability is great""It integrates (fully) with VMware and Veeam, my hypervisor, and backup vendors, so for me, all the puzzle pieces simply fit and work smoothly.""StarWind vSAN is a great solution to create a redundant two-node-only Hyper-V cluster, both for domain or workgroup scenarios.""The ProActive support gives me peace of mind because I am a one man shop, but with the technical support behind me, I feel like more than just one person. We spent two to three hours, depending on what we have to do, always on the phone, and they do not push to end the call.""The available GUI is excellent for monitoring and operating the system in an easy and direct way.""The biggest benefit was that it allowed us to provide SAN services on a limited hardware budget.""The ability to keep data accessible even in the event of hardware failures is highly valued, as it ensures business continuity."

"In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies.""The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works.""This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place."

"The component integration means I don't have to worry about technology mismatches.""The high redundancy of components has minimized frequent service degradation/failure.""Some of the key features are the ease of operation and access, without constraining actions. The tool is available to actually move things around, do things quickly quickly.""It's an integrated box Mac solution, so it's a plug and play. The deployment and build is pre-made and ready to deploy. It makes it easy to apply.""UCS Manager worked well for net/blade management and has allowed fairly easy use of dedicated bare-metal blades.""The XtremIO All-Flash array delivers performance, reliability, and deduplication.""The most valuable features are reliability and high availability.""Access to VMs is now faster due to the centralized management console."

Cons
"I would like to see more user-friendly dashboards in future versions.""It should be improved in the way it detects the right filesystem image after a complete shutdown of the system or in the case of disaster recovery.""The system failovers properly on its own without too much worry.""Though I have learned some of the nuances with the upgrading of firmware/windows/etc., it would be nice to have a more efficient method of doing so.""Some of the documentation seems to be a bit older and refers to deprecated items.""When you will cease your contract with StarWind (for support) your product won't be updated and that is a big selling point, especially for us, as we have loads of products from StarWind.""Android app for monitoring and receiving push notifications as alarms or monitoring I/O from any mobile device could be a good feature and nice to have as we are not always on our desk.""High availability for direct attached hardware drives could be useful for increasing the performance of a storage appliance."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc.""An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution.""HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model."

More Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC Series Cons →

"I would like to see them improve their switching infrastructure and rely on Cisco configurations. They are a bit more complex and technical, but result in a slightly reduced cost in terms of switching on the network side of it.""The user control could be more advanced. They should work to improve this in future releases.""With respect to the technical support, there is room for improvement.""It needs more customer/client involvement in back-end management.""Tighter alignment could simplify and speed up the configuration and delivery process.""While most public clouds are deployed on Linux, there is current no certified Vblock working on KVM hypervisors.""The implementation and support could be better.""The integration with other vendors' products needs to be looked at. It's not as flexible as we would like it to be."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

    Information Not Available
  • "Strive for a consolidated ELA."
  • "Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
  • "I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
  • "It is not cheap."
  • "Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
  • "I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
  • "The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
  • "Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."
