Ensures data safety and effective cloud integration with AI-powered protection
Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) offers a backup, recovery, and management tool that is very easy to use. It provides a flexible protection suite that accommodates scalability and performance needs. Integration with VMware and multi-cloud protection is effective. AI integration enhances backup operations by analyzing data and ensuring malware protection. Customers also benefit from hybrid cloud options and tiers of backup.

The solution can be used to back up servers and Hyper-V cluster nodes, but its support is super expensive
I wouldn't rate Unitrends a ten out of ten because we had some hard drive failures in the appliance. Typically, when you have OneDrive, you can get it replaced. For some particular reason, the situation caused the entire system to crash. We had to reinstall the CentOS operating system on it, and we lost all our backups. They said there was no way to retain it, and it was pretty devastating and concerning that a drive failure would cause the loss of all the data on the appliance. It was extremely disappointing, and we had to start from scratch after three years worth of backup data. I rate Unitrends a nine out of ten for stability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution's most valuable features are networker and continuous data protection."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) offers a backup, recovery, and management tool that is very easy to use."
"We don't need to manage different devices."
"IDPA's best feature is Turbo Boost Technology. The compression and duplication features are excellent, too."
"We use it for complete backup and recovery. We have multiple clients and have created multiple large virtual capabilities and zoning backlogs."
"The most valuable feature is the deduplication rate."
"Instead of four or five tools, consisting of backup software, storage where the backup resides, and a separate system for reporting and central monitoring, they all now come in the virtual edition for IDP."
"The solution is strong."
"The predictive analytics are great and the reporting is awesome."
"The backup feature and recovery option are good because they allow the instant recovery of Hyper-V nodes and files."
"Backup/archive to multiple locations."
"When I have had to use tech support, they've been very good."
"VM backup is much faster and more reliable, as I can test my backups with Data Copy Access jobs."
"The simple and fast restore routine."
"I am impressed with the tool's reporting and UniView features."
"I like the fact that you can recover the VMs inside the appliance. For example, they're basically running this appliance on a Linux-based distribution, and they're spinning off KVM virtual machines inside."

Cons

"I would like to see integration with Dell EMC's Cloud Tier."
"After resizing and compression, the system continuously runs out of space. Dell EMC doesn't do automatic cleanup or other things, so we constantly have to manually go in there or work with Dell support on this. The solution has not been working as advertised."
"The solution's implementation was very complicated and could be improved."
"The two-factor authentication is missing from Dell products."
"The only thing that could be improved would be the complexity of the initial setup."
"There is room for improvement in terms of network connectivity."
"The product's index master feature needs improvement."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) requires more updates and innovations in AI-powered cyber resilience."
"Making the seeding process more accessible and easier to understand. Also, make more of the undocumented best practices easier to find."
"The ability to run just differentials without pulling the full on your archive."
"Support is great for small simple issues, but anything more difficult, it is hard to get good resolutions without having to badger them and their management."
"Probably the biggest issue I've had is actually paying for the unit, and part of that problem is that they use a third party for the billing."
"It could be a little more customizable."
"The solution's base operating system needs to be improved."
"The amount of updates which are being released. Updates should be limited to two or three a year, focusing more on quality instead of a rushed bug release."
"I would like to see more storage options for the free version."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I would rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
"We have a perpetual license. It is a capacity-based license."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) has a yearly subscription fee."
"The licensing is billed on a monthly basis. Dell is bundled so that when you order IDPA, you get everything together with the license."
"It is a cost-effective solution."
"Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"With respect to cost, my advice is to get what you need."
"Their licensing depended on the number of CPUs you had."
"You should be aware how much the monthly costs are to use, what the initial costs for hardware are, and what the options to expand are, if needed."
"We found that the cost of Unitrends was about the same as the Dell DR6300. We liked the fact that the Unitrends appliance was all-in-one."
"The cost of Unitrends definitely draws you in. The licensing is all included in the appliance, which is a great incentive."
"Pricing model constantly changes."
