Provides backups, including long-term retention with increased uptime and compatibility
I was looking for a virtual edition, and that is now available. Many customers struggle to find a solution for ransomware protection, but we can set up an enterprise recovery vault for that purpose. These features are now part of Dell's overall offering. The solution has matured, and while I don't criticize technology, most of our technical and business requirements are met with the Data Domain storage solution. We can meet customer requirements easily with Data Domain. Some feedback has been received from our operations team. There’s always room for improvement. Scalability is my sore spot. With the way they use nodes and count nodes, it’s very easy to blow well past your license amount. I have, for example, a 150 node license, of which I am monitoring 337 nodes. However, only 150 are actually monitored, so I have to do a lot to try to find the right applications to monitor. Since the next level for licensing is 500/700 or something like that, I simply haven’t been able to afford the bump up. I simply need a much higher license level than I have. However, the cost is too much and they lack the flexibility in allowing you a smaller step up. It goes from, say 150 nodes to 500. There is no 250 or 300, for example. Would I find applications to monitor, with the selection from Windows, Linux, SQL, IIS, Active Director, and Exchange? You bet. For now, however, I have to be patient until I can justify the cost of the upgrade.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Its pricing is not overly expensive."
"It's very competitive in terms of the price and technology. Also, the development team continuously makes updates. The data reduction feature is very useful."
"The hardware can operate in high temperatures, in case of any disaster."
"It's deduplication and faster recovery that are the key features."
"Our clients like the wide range of features that are available within this single solution."
"I like Data Domain as a protocol for data backup."
"Dell PowerProtect DD is a stable solution."
"The backup is very secure. The deduplication using EMC is very good. We are able to make systems and handle random cloning. EMC is a very stable solution for making backups."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."

Cons

"Dell PowerProtect DD does not have integration with the cloud and virtualization software."
"The price could be improved."
"The licensing is not cost-effective, and the pricing could be better."
"It can probably have integration with other OEMs. It should also have more features for ransomware protection."
"DD doesn't have Intel's air gap technology."
"The Data Domain solution appliance is quite expensive."
"Data Domain lacks compatibility with fiber channels and tapes. We can't use it with a tape library. That's an issue in Latin America sometimes because a lot of clients still use tapes for budget reasons. Maybe they have a lot of archives. In North America and Europe, they do a lot of archiving, but they use the cloud more than we do. Sometimes we have to put together a Frankenstein where we connect another server to the tape library and send all the data there."
"EMC is very expensive for small customers."
"The solution could always be more easily scalable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is really high compared to other vendors. The licensing cost is huge. Normal, mid-tier companies or small-scale companies wouldn't be able to afford it easily."
"The solution is expensive. However, if you pay less you receive less, it is cost-effective."
"The price may be a bit higher than other products in the market, but you will receive ten out of ten support with next-business-day delivery on parts' availability."
"Becoming more expensive."
"Pricing is related to size. A lower range solution might be about $33,000. My customers use higher range versions with a price of around $100,000. That's the price for both the hardware and software."
"This is one of the more expensive backup solutions on the market."
"The price of the solution and support for Dell PowerProtect DD is expensive. We have customers that cannot upgrade to a newer version of the solution because the support is too expensive."
"I can't remember what the license costs are. They might be paid monthly or every two months."
